The missing key for defense innovation? A good coworking space
As the director of commercial engagement for the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a Department of Defense (DOD) organization that funds startups developing cutting-edge weapons technology for the military, Sarah Pearson is well acquainted with keeping secrets. What's surprising is that her team often keeps secrets from the very startups it recruits. It's not for any cloak-and-dagger reason, just bureaucracy. With security clearances taking up to 18 months, Pearson's team often supplies startups with fake data—made-up enemy capabilities—to simulate real defense scenarios, so they have something to work on until they're cleared to access classified material. 'In the fast-moving world of AI, if it takes 18 months . . . I no longer need that company, their model is already obsolete,' she says. Enter Nooks, a startup that acts as a kind of coworking space for classified communication. The company's cutesy name and squirrel logo belie its purpose: to build and maintain a network of these high-tech, espionage-proof, on-demand facilities where startups can handle classified information—spaces known as SCIFs, or sensitive compartmented information facilities.

New Glasgow-inspired wellbeing wallpaper unveiled by SAMH
The wallpaper, featuring key Glasgow landmarks and nods to the city's culture, was revealed by SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. It is set to be a prominent feature in the first Nook, Scotland's first-ever network of walk-in mental health support hubs, set to be launched in Glasgow later this year. Read more: 'Incredibly impressed': New health boss praises staff after first week in role The wallpaper was co-designed by SAMH and Glasgow-based creative business No Rules through a series of workshops with people who have experienced mental health problems, young people, and SAMH staff. Jude Deacons, SAMH's senior programme manager for The Nook, said: "This wallpaper beautifully captures everything The Nook is going to be about. "It's warm, welcoming, non-clinical, and inclusive – a place to make connections. "We held several workshops with people we support, young people, and members of staff to work together on the design, and we're absolutely thrilled with the result and the sense of place it conjures up. "This design is inspired by Glasgow's culture and landscape, and each of the five Nooks will have a unique design that reflects their locations. "Mental Health Awareness Week's theme this year is 'community', which is exactly what The Nook is all about." The Nook is the largest mental health charity initiative in Scotland's history, and is designed to provide barrier-free access to mental health support. Anyone looking for help will be able to walk through the door whenever they need to, with no need to book an appointment, no need for NHS referrals, and no waiting lists. Designing The Nook (Image: Supplied) Eve McGhee, employability specialist at SAMH, said: "It's wonderful to see the finished wallpaper. "We had some great conversations about creating a space that works for people, community, mental health, and what makes Glasgow, Glasgow. "The wallpaper is really striking and hopefully everyone else who fed into the design likes it as much as I do." "This wallpaper is more than just a visually striking graphic for the walls; it's a tool that makes the space feel both welcoming and homely. 'People will be able to see the wallpaper when they visit The Nook and it will support the non-clinical and welcoming environment being created, and put a smile on their faces. "We hope it will be a conversation-starter in a place where talking is so important." More information about The Nook, including how to donate, can be found on the SAMH website.
