PM wants FRU truck accident to be investigated, send condolences to victim's families
PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the authorities to thoroughly investigate the accident involving a stone-laden lorry and a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, Perak, yesterday.
He also sent condolences to the families of nine FRU personnel and directed authorities to provide assistance to the victims and their families.
'My condolences to the families of the Federal Reserve Unit members who lost their lives in the road accident in Teluk Intan this morning (yesterday).
'I also pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured in this incident and that all matters will be eased for them.
'Authorities are urged to carry out a comprehensive investigation and provide the necessary assistance to the victims and their families,' he said in a statement on his social media yesterday.
The accident occurred around 8.54am and was believed to be caused by a steering failure in the lorry which was carrying stones. The lorry then crashed in front of the FRU truck which resulted in nine fatalities.
The Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisham Nordin said the FRU truck which carried 18 personnel from Unit 5 was on its way back from Ipoh after they finished their duty for the Chitrapournami celebration in Hilir Perak.
'When they arrived at the scene, the Unit 5 FRU truck was hit head-on by the lorry carrying stones, which is believed to have experienced steering failure,' he said.
Police inspector-general Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has ordered a thorough investigation into an accident, ensuring fairness and transparency in accordance with the law.
'Following the accident, I have contacted the Perak Police Chief for a detailed investigation to be carried out.
'We assure that the welfare of all personnel affected by this incident will be given the utmost attention,' he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the family will receive financial aid between RM58,000 and RM269,700 through various welfare funds as well as insurance compensation
This, he said includes RM1,200 from the Welfare Fund, RM25,000 from the Warriors and National Defence Fund and RM20,000 from the PDRM work disaster ex gratia scheme.
'They will also receive financial donations of RM11,000 from the Perak contingent police headquarters and those who contributed to the PDRM cooperative will receive RM1,500 in death benefits and insurance compensation between RM36,000 and RM211,000 according to their contributions –TMR
