St. Paul Saints fire back at John Oliver with 'Plain Night'

Fans at Thursday's game between the St. Paul Saints and Norfolk Tides can expect to receive a plain piece of white paper and be treated to in-game entertainment that includes a PowerPoint presentation and white bread. Weird? Yes. Fun? Remains to be seen. A clever jab at comedian John Oliver? Yup. Oliver featured the Saints in an episode of Last Week Tonight, admonishing the team for having a boring name when other Triple-A baseball teams have names like the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, El Paso Chihuahuas, Sugar Land Space Cowboys, or the Toledo Mud Hens. Oliver offered a "total rebrand" to one minor league club, a rebrand in which the team would be allowed no input. However, on Sunday, he revealed that the team getting that treatment is the Erie SeaWolves. In response, "the Saints are leaning into the dullard nature of their name for a Meh type of game," the team says. On May 22, it'll host "Plain Night," a promotion dedicated to being as boring as possible. The first 1,000 fans will get a sheet of plain white paper as Thursday's giveaway. Then, during the game, the peanut toss will be replaced by white bread being thrown at fans during the seventh-inning stretch. That will come after a PowerPoint presentation on the jumbotron featuring all the team names that the Saints didn't take when it was founded in 1993. The names include the Accountants, Municipals, and Eastern Gray Squirrels. (I get it, but that last one is actually pretty solid and could have a great mascot.) If you want to get on the jumbotron during this historic night, don't wear a costume. The team plans to only show fans who are wearing khaki pants and a tucked-in shirt. Those fans won't be enjoying standard ballpark treats, either. The team says it'll only be serving vanilla ice cream as a dessert during the game. Additionally, anyone with the name John or Oliver will get in free, with the team adding that those are "two of the Top 150 generic men's names in the world." "In a world full of fireworks, pigs delivering baseball to umpires, and Fun is Good, the Saints are boldly choosing to do less," the team said in an announcement. "Wear your beige, tuck in that polo, and prepare for a night that redefines 'just fine.' Baseball will be played. Possibly. Fun will be had. Arguably."

Orioles minor league recap 5/8: Blake Money dazzles for Aberdeen

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 10, Nashville Sounds (Brewers) 6 - F/10 The Tides benefitted from 13 hits, nine walks, and three Nashville errors to score 10 runs in this extra-inning win. Tyler O'Neill continued his rehab, batting second and playing right field. He went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a strikeout. Luis Vázquez led the offense with three hits, including a three-run home run. TT Bowens singled, tripled, and walked. Dylan Beavers singled, walked, stole a base, and scored once. Jud Fabian reached base three times. David Bañuelos smacked his first home run of the season off of old friend Bruce Zimmermann. Advertisement Cameron Weston turned in a nice start for the O's. Over five innings he allowed two runs on five hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Kade Strowd struggled in relief, coughing up four runs on six hits in just two-thirds of an inning. But from there it was smooth sailing. Grant Wolfram worked a scoreless inning, and then Roansy Contreras dominated for three frames, striking out five in the process to earn the win. Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 3 - Game 1 - F/8 Game 1 of the doubleheader saw the Baysox come back from a three-run deficit to get the extra-innings victory. Trace Bright was the starter for Chesapeake, but he lasted just three innings and allowed all three of the runs, two of which were earned. The bullpen took over from there. Houston Roth, Preston Johnson, and Keagan Gillies combined for five scoreless innings of relief. Johnson was the standout. He worked three hitless innings, walked four, and struck out five. Advertisement The Baysox offense produced their four runs off of six hits (all singles) and six walks. Frederick Bencosme reached base twice, but struggled on the bases. He was caught stealing once and picked off the other time. Creed Willems and Max Wagner both recorded a base hit and a run scored. Silas Ardoin walked four times and scored a run. Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 1 - Game 2 The Baysox completed the doubleheader sweep with another comeback, this time bouncing back from just a one-run gap. Adam Retzbach went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. His OPS on the season is up to a team-high .902. The team's only other hits were singles from Willems and Anthony Servideo. Tavian Josenberger walked and stole two bases. Advertisement It was a group effort on the pitching side. Four different hurlers appeared in this game. Juan Nuñez stuck around for the longest, tossing 2.2 innings in which he allowed one run, walked three, and struck out six. Edgar Portes, Yaqui Rivera, and Gerald Ogando then combined for 4.1 shutout frames to get a win in the nightcap. High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 1, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) 0 Aberdeen cashed in on a great performance from the pitching staff, led by starter Blake Money. The LSU product delivered 5.1 scoreless innings in which he struck out six and walked just one to earn the win. Levi Stoudt, on a rehab assignment, worked 1.2 perfect innings. And Wyatt Cheney nabbed his second save of the season with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. There was less to be impressed by on the offensive side of things. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, struck out 14 times, and worked six walks. Their lone run scored on an Aneudis Mordán sac fly to bring in Jake Cunningham. Mordán, Cunningham, and Ethan Anderson had one hit apiece. Anderson's double was their only extra-base knock. Vance Honeycutt went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 6, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs) 3 The Shorebirds managed to score six runs without the help of an extra-base hit. All 11 of their hits were singles. They added to that five walks and two stolen bases. Their 4-for-11 line with runners in scoring position was helpful to make the most of their opportunities. Edwin Amparo led the lineup with three hits. Raylin Ramos singled twice, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Alfredo Velásquez also had two hits and scored twice. Advertisement Luis De León made his season debut as the starting pitcher. He lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed a run before handing the ball to Jake Cravey. Cravey was the most effective pitcher of the day, going 4.2 shutout innings and striking out three. Adrián Delgado struggled after him, giving up two runs in 1.1 innings. But then Simon Leandro was able to lock things down for the final 1.2 innings to earn the win. Box Scores Thursday's Schedule Norfolk: at Nashville, 7:35 pm. First day of construction for $750 million Norfolk casino

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Friday was day one of the $750 million construction project that is changing the Norfolk landscape, with the first piles going into the ground for a casino being built between the Amtrak station and Harbor Park that is expected to be completed in late 2027. The team who constructed Portsmouth Casino now expected to build Norfolk Casino The banging sounds of the pile driver could be heard across land and water as Norfolk's largest private economic development project starts rising from the ground. It takes Drone 10 just to see how mammoth this project is. Norfolk hosts 'groundbreaking ceremony' for casino, however construction company hasn't been chosen 'We're testing the pilings to make sure that the conditions and the length of the pilings, the width of the piling diamond, the size of it, per the design criteria, support the building,' said Raymond Crochet, project executive for the Yates-S.B. Ballard Construction project. Crochet said this is the beginning of what's to come. 'The first, early steps will be actually in the next few weeks,' he said. 'We'll start moving in some more dirt and get the site contractor on board.' Long time Norfolk Tides fan Joel Rubin usually boards Hampton Roads Transit's Light Rail at Newtown Road to go to games. 'Now I'm going to be competing with casino people going to the casino who may want to park down there and ride the Light Rail,' Rubin said, 'and when they get here, they do casinos, but baseball is a family entertainment. Do they really go together? I don't really think so.' Norfolk to permanently close Harbor Park parking lot for casino development Rubin doesn't have a beef with the construction company. He blames the city of Norfolk. 'I think people are going to go to the casino, and they're going to stay at the casino, and they're going to gamble at the casino, and then they're going to go home,' Rubin said. Said Crochet: 'I mean, there's plenty of job opportunities for the community. This is going to be brought in for everyone, you know, from a construction standpoint. Then later on with the gaming operation. It's a huge boost in the economy of the area of what we see.' Again, Rubin blames the city of Norfolk. 'It ticks me off that they've taken away hundreds of parking spaces for Tides' fans and for people who go over and use the Amtrak,' Rubin said. 'A lot of people use that Amtrak station to go to Washington or New York, wherever they go, and, and it's been very, very successful. Harbor Park has been very successful as a minor league stadium for the Norfolk Tides. Friday, there were a number of Amtrak riders, bags in tow, parking farther away rather than up-close like they had before, riders such as Portsmouth residents Debbie and Conrad Strickland. Every other week, Debbie Strickland hits the track to northern Virginia. 'We have to park way over here,' he said, pointing across the street. They used to park right next to the station. For the Stricklands, Amtrak is more important than a casino, and these Portsmouth residents have never been to Rivers Casino Portsmouth. A transitional gaming facility is expected out here later this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Norfolk Amtrak parking lot permanently closed for casino construction

Construction of Norfolk's long-planned casino project next to Harbor Park downtown is finally expected to begin in mid-February, developers announced on Monday. To prepare for construction, the adjacent Amtrak station parking lot was closed permanently Monday. From now on, Amtrak customers will need to park in a lot across the street from the station. Officials held a ceremonial ground breaking for the project in late October. At that time, officials confirmed there would be parking disruptions for both Amtrak train customers and for Norfolk Tides games. Developers Boyd Gaming and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe plan to begin construction in mid-February, pending final approvals from the city of Norfolk, according to Monday's announcement. Here's how Norfolk casino construction will change Amtrak, Tides baseball parking Harbor Park Lot D next to the Amtrak station will be permanently closed beginning Jan. 27, according to the city. Passengers will need to park in Lot E, which is located across Park Avenue. Overflow parking will also be available in Lot C, which will also serve as a cellphone lot where cars can wait to pick up passengers, the city said. Lot C is located about a half mile from the station, according to Google Maps. The city said shuttle service from Lot C and E to the station will be available one hour prior to each train departure. Shuttles will also be available for arriving passengers. The city is urging passengers to arrive early to accommodate the construction. In the announcement, Boyd Gaming President and CEO Keith Smith said the casino plans would start to become a reality in a few short weeks. Some pre-construction work, including the installation of fencing, will begin Feb. 3. 'When complete in just three short years, this $750 million resort will be an entertainment destination that this entire community can take pride in — drawing visitors from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and generating billions of dollars in economic activity for the city of Norfolk and the greater Hampton Roads area,' Smith said. Current casino plans call for a 65,000-square-foot casino floor with 1,500 slots and 50 table games, a 200-room hotel, eight restaurants and a parking deck with 1,300 spaces, according to the project website and city documents. Norfolk's casino has undergone several delays and plan changes since being announced by the Pamunkey Tribe in in 2018. After adding veteran Nevada casino company Boyd Gaming in Sept. 2024, the project has picked up steam, gaining several necessary construction approvals from the city. To meet a statutory deadline, developers plan to open a temporary gaming space in a tent-like structure later this year, with the permanent casino opening in late 2027.
