KUALA LUMPUR: Former TV host Norjuma Habib Mohamed was fined RM1,000 by the magistrate's court today on a charge of slapping and scratching the hands of a woman four years ago. The 45-year-old entrepreneur was sentenced after she changed her plea to guilty before magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim. The court ordered Norjuma to serve a month in jail if she failed to pay the fine. Deputy public prosecutor Iman Nurhidayah Ezani had earlier asked the court to mete out a sentence to serve as a lesson. In mitigation, Norjuma's lawyer Faiz Kamal Jaafar applied for a sentence in the form of a fine. "My client is not working and she is currently pursuing studies at a local university. Her retired father is supporting her," he said. Norjuma was charged with committing the offence at 10.30am at a condominium Wangsa Maju on Oct 18, 2021. The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt provides for a maximum one-year jail term or a fine up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction. On June 27 last year, four magistrate's courts issued arrest warrants against Norjuma for failure to appear for mention in proceedings of five criminal charges against her. She had, in April last year, claimed trial to charges of voluntarily causing hurt to three persons and committing mischief by damaging property at a condominium.
