Heartbreak as beloved TikTok grandmother whose hilarious videos with her granddaughter made her a viral sensation dies aged 91
People have been left heartbroken after a beloved TikTok grandmother passed away aged 91. Norma Burton, whose hilarious videos with her granddaughter Jess Asquith had made her a viral star with 2.7 million followers on the platform, 'fell to sleep peacefully', her family announced on Monday. Fans had grown increasingly concerned after Jess and Norma, who had posted most days, had not shared a new video in over a month. The duo from Retford in Nottingham would frequently share prank videos, clips of them on days out, or content reacting to viral trends. On Monday night, Norma's family revealed the sad news of her passing, describing her as a 'beautiful, precious, perfect lady'. The tribute read: 'We are all truly devastated and our lives will never be the same. We want you all to know that Nan fell to sleep peacefully, surrounded by all her family, she was full of love and had the most beautiful care. If anyone deserves a place in heaven, it's you Nanny Norma.' Alongside the post, the family shared a sweet picture of Norma in a blue top, wearing a crown and smiling at the camera. They continued: 'Social media and our community online made Nan's last years so incredibly special, her cup was full and in her own words she 'lived such a wonderful life'. '91 years was never going to be enough and she has left the biggest hole in all of our hearts. Reunited with her husband and family, until we meet again, our queen.' On social media, Jess and Norma have 2.7 million followers on TikTok, and 1.6 million fans on Facebook. In 2023, Norma told the BBC: 'You'd think they'd have something better to do than watch me. 'It's overwhelming but we have some lovely people that we've talked to.' Devastated fans have rushed to express their condolences since news of Norma's passing. Jade Thirlwall, a former member of girl band Little Mix wrote: 'Sending you and your family so much love. Norma brought so much joy to so many, she reminded me of my own Nanna (I would sometimes watch your videos with tears of joy) and helped me heal, as I'm sure is the case for so many people on here. 'What a special lady and family you are.' TikTok star Lauren Saddington penned: 'My favourite people to watch on this app for years. You've brought us so much light, joy, laughter & tears. On Monday night, Norma's family revealed the sad news of her passing, describing her as a 'beautiful, precious, perfect lady' 'Thank you for everything Norma, you truly are one in a million and will be forever missed. Jess we love you, please take care of yourself. Thank you for the magic ❤️' X Factor stars Jedward added: 'All of TikTok is mourning this loss ❤️' In their most recent video, posted on May 8, Jess asked Norma: 'Nan, how beautiful is your flower arrangement from my mum?' A delighted Norma had responded: 'It's absolutely gorgeous Jess. And when I come downstairs and look at that waiting for me and the colour on the cream background, it's beautiful.' However she also joked that Jess's mother is also 'talented at leaving a mess behind her, but she does do some clever things!' 'I could just eat it!' she added. In their most popular video, which has 28 million views, Jess asked Norma to repeat a simple sentence with a different emotion each time. Norma had to say 'we're related!' in party mode, as a vampire, and like a cow - with people in the comments saying 'she's literally precious', while another demanded: 'Give her an Oscar!' In another, Jess used the popular 'red flags' filter on her grandmother. She burst out laughing when Norma's read: 'No job, has no filter, not flexible.' Norma was quick to dispute the 'no job' allegation, joking: 'Well, I don't know Jessica! I can pick crumbs up off the floor with my finger when I lick it.' Jess then said Norma is a 'content creator' on TikTok and a 'granfluencer', so actually does have a job. Speaking about the flexible comment, Norma said she can't touch her toes, but doesn't 'have any desire to!' Jess herself recently announced that her father had passed away, writing on social media in April: 'Some of you may have noticed things have been a little quieter over the past month. Her family posted a heartfelt tribute on Monday night, revealing Norma had passed away peacefully in her sleep 'I'm heartbroken to tell you all that l lost my dad suddenly in April. It's been the most difficult thing I've ever had to navigate. 'My heart aches and the pain feels unbearable. I haven't really got the words. Jake has been my absolute rock and I've got amazing family and friends around me. 'Jake has been and will continue posting old footage and photos across our pages, whilst I take a little more time. Lots of love, Jess.'
