Devastated Melbourne mother mourns son's death in car crash after chilling text message
A Melbourne mother has detailed the gut-wrenching moment a text message revealed her son was involved in a deadly car crash, decades after her daughter was also killed in a similar accident. Marc Rowan, 37, was killed on May 3 when his car rolled on Fallon Street in North Albury. In the moments after the crash, his phone automatically messaged his mother, Jacquelyne Rowan, through an app on his phone. 'Crash detected SOS,' it read. 'I called emergency services from this approximate location after the iPhone detected a crash. 'You are receiving this message because I have you listed as an emergency contact.' Ms Rowan told 7NEWS she tried to call Marc, but 'he didn't answer'. And shockingly, her grief is compounded by the death of her young daughter who was also killed in a car accident in 1993. 'I feel like I'm a shell of myself, but I've got to keep going,' she told the broadcaster. Family and friends are now fundraising to 'give our son the send off he deserves and bury him with his sister', the heartbroken mother added through tears. Ms Rowan said her son 'would always step up, he was always there' as reported by NewsLocal earlier this month. 'Nothing changed over the years, he would always put others first. If you need anything Marc would be the first person to step up,' Ms Rowan said. 'He drove trucks for many years, he loved the open road. He was well mannered and praised for his work ethics and politeness. 'When he put his mind to something, he would make sure it was done.' As of mid-May 2025, Victoria has recorded 117 road deaths, up from 104 at the same time last year. New South Wales has reported 137 road fatalities this year, marking a concerning increase from 117 during the same period in 2024.

How a son's phone alerted his mother to his death, decades after his sister died the same way
A heartbroken mother has revealed how an automated text message alerted her to the car crash that claimed the life of her son, decades after her daughter died in a similar incident. Marc Rowan, 37, died in a car crash on Fallon Street in North Albury, NSW, on the evening of May 3. Moments after his car flipped, an app on his mobile phone automatically notified his mother Jacquelyne Rowan that he had likely been involved in a crash. 'Car crash detected SOS,' the text, which Ms Rowan revealed to 7News read, alongside a pinpoint location of the incident. 'I called emergency services from this approximate location after iPhone detected a crash. You are receiving this message because I have listed you as an emergency contact.' After receiving the text, Ms Rowan said she tried to call her son to no avail. It was a familiar loss for Ms Rowan who, in 1993, lost her daughter Jessica in a car accident. 'I feel like I'm just a shell of myself but I've got to keep going,' she said. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. The family has launched a fundraiser that Ms Rowan hoped would give her son 'the send-off he deserves' and would help bury him alongside his sister. 'It's with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved Marc, a truly wonderful man with a heart of gold,' the GoFundMe page said. 'Marc was tragically taken from us in a car accident, leaving behind a wave of shock, sadness, and grief among everyone who knew him.' The family described the 37-year-old as a 'rare soul' whose 'kindness, generosity and unwavering loyalty touched so many lives'. 'Any contribution, big or small, will help ease the burden on his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and allow them to say goodbye in a way that reflects the love and light Marc brought into the world,' the GoFundMe page read. 'Thank you for your support, your kind words, and for keeping Marc's memory alive.' Since being launched earlier this month, the fundraiser has attracted $2,785 towards a target of $15,500. Tributes from friends and loved ones have poured in on social media, describing Mr Rowan as a 'wonderful person' and a 'beautiful soul'. 'Our son, whose passing inspires us to cherish every moment, find strength in our memories of him, and strive for resilience,' Ms Rowan wrote on Facebook. 'We yearn for one more day with him.'

Albury, Cohuna Kangas, Woorinen, Maffra: Country footy wrap
Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Footy. Followed categories will be added to My News. Albury put its faltering season back on track with a stirring come-from-behind win against Corowa-Rutherglen by two points in the Ovens & Murray league on Saturday. The former competition powerhouse, which missed finals last year for the first time since 2008, had lost its last two matches by a combined 179 points and found itself in early trouble trailing Corowa-Rutherglen by 31 points. Albury fought back in the second term, but didn't hit the front until late in the final term with Kolby Hennessy and Jake Pitt kicking late goals to pinch victory. A tiring Corowa-Rutherglen pushed forward in the dying stages, but a match-saving mark in the final 30 seconds from Albury defender Ben Kelly sealed the Tigers' second win. Kelly's direct opponent, Kaelan Bradtke, threatened to be the matchwinner for Corowa-Rutherglen with four goals and fellow forward Darcy Hope was equally damaging with two goals. Sydney premiership coach Paul Roos helped out former Swans teammate and first-year Corowa-Rutherglen coach Daryn Cresswell. Corowa-Rutherglen is sitting at 1-3 and in danger of losing touch with the top five. Albury regained ruckman Isaac Muller, Jacob Page and Jacob Conlan from the Anzac Day loss to North Albury. Geelong league recruit Pitt was also damaging up forward and finished with three goals. Albury is being coached by former Hawthorn and Collingwood player Max Lynch this season. Two other O&M matches were decided by 10 points or less with Yarrawonga coming from 23 points down at halftime to beat Myrtleford by 10 and North Albury also turned around a 10-point halftime deficit to win by five points. Myrtleford kicked 1.7 in the second half and North Albury coach Tim Broomhead dominated after halftime to help his team to its third successive win. Wangaratta also trailed at halftime against Wodonga before getting home by 21 points. CENTRAL MURRAY Cohuna Kangas star recruits Tom Toma and Ricky Monti played starring roles in taking down reigning premiers Nyah-Nyah West United by 49 points. The Kangas busted the match open in the second term by piling on six goals to two to lead by 32 points at halftime. Toma and Monti played for Essendon's VFL team and Bendigo club Golden Square before Toma returned to his original club this season and was joined by Monti in a major injection to the Kangas' midfield which also includes another star player, Joel Helman. Kangas coach Jack Geary didn't play on Saturday, but Toma booted four goals in the big win which leaves the reigning premiers with only one win from their first four games. Nyah-Nyah West young gun Ethan Curran was among the best with Brayden Bingham and Joel Campbell. Woorinen upstaged Mallee Eagles by 17 points to also announce itself as a flag contender. Despite missing star forward Darcy Hourigan for the last two games, Woorinen is on top with 4-0 record under new coach Tim Free. Captain Henry Thompson dominated for Woorinen. GIPPSLAND Maffra upstaged reigning premier Traralgon by 19 points in a round loaded with upsets. A near full strength Traralgon led by 20 points at quarter time, but with only goal for the remainder of the match coming late in the final term as Maffra's young players helped engineer the shock result. Experienced midfielder Alex Carr returned to the Maffra line-up and led the way for Sam Richards, Archer Watt and Noah Christy. Bairnsdale won a rare match on the road against Warragul by 17 points after exploding out of the blocks with a six goals to two in the opening term. Tom Blenheim and Will Mitchell were prominent in the Bairnsdale midfield and Jamie Dore kicked three goals. Moe dominated after halftime to beat Leongatha by 47 points. Harrison Pepper and star recruit Ben Crocker booted three goals for the Lions, who have moved to top spot. Country footy Anzac Day blockbusters in Bendigo, O&M and Gippsland
Some big country footy clashes are being played on Anzac Day in the Bendigo, Ovens & Murray, Sunraysia, Hampden and Gippsland leagues. The Weekly Times has nominated the five best match-ups and who should win. SOUTH BENDIGO v EAGLEHAWK, Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo The call to make the South Bendigo-Eaglehawk clash a stand-alone Anzac Day fixture under lights at South's old digs at the QEO has proved an inspired one with both teams making the perfect start to 2025. Rejuvenated South couldn't have made a better start with wins over last year's runner-up Gisborne and beaten preliminary finalist Strathfieldsaye. Eaglehawk sits on top of the ladder undefeated with a massive percentage following wins against Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat. Fortuitously, Eaglehawk has VFL-aligned players Lachlan Walker and Max Kennedy available due to Coburg having a bye, but the third member of the Coburg connection, Jesse Corigliano, is still out injured. Co-coach Clayton Holmes also returns from suspension for Eaglehawk to play his first match of 2025. In the win against Gisborne, South introduced three more recruits, Cal Crisp, James Davies and Jesse Collins, but has lost former coach Steve Stroobants to suspension. Prediction: South Bendigo 6 points NORTH ALBURY v ALBURY, Bunton Park, North Albury The two fierce Ovens & Murray rivals have been slugging it out on Anzac Day since the late 1990s. North Albury squandered its best chance to beat Albury for the first since 2008 in the traditional fixture last year. Young forward Josh Murphy could've been a Hopper hero forever, but his shot after the siren missed and North Albury lost by two points. North Albury went on to reach the preliminary final last year and Albury missed finals for the first time since 2008. Albury suffered an uncharacteristic 110-point thrashing from Wangaratta Rovers on Good Friday. North Albury has suffered a major early season blow with star forward Josh Minogue with a broken thumb, but the Albury midfield will be weakened by the loss of Fletcher Carroll, who is in concussion protocols. Prediction: North Albury 15 points TRARALGON v MORWELL, Traralgon Recreation Reserve The old sparring partners go head-to-head under lights with Morwell's ability to curb the star power of Traralgon captain Tye Hourigan to be a major factor in the outcome. Hourigan booted six goals in their mid-season draw between the two clubs last year. His goalkicking heroics were again on show last round when Traralgon came from nowhere to grab victory late against Moe following the opening round defeat to Leongatha at home when Dyson Heppell laced up for the Parrots. Morwell is on top of the ladder with two wins against Drouin and Warragul. The return of man-mountain Isaac Abas to Morwell from three seasons at Morwell East has been a big factor in the promising start to 2025. Prediction: Traralgon 12 points IMPERIALS v MILDURA, Brian Weightman Oval, Mildura Imperials have made the perfect start to their flag defence with wins against Ouyen United and South Mildura and Mildura followed an opening round win against Red Cliffs with a loss to Robvinvale-Euston. Imperials have played on their 36-player points limit in both victories with Queensland recruit Jai Fitzpatrick making an impressive start. Ryan Hards, who has returned to Imperials from Donald, is set to play his first match since recovering from a hip injury. Jayden Fox has kicked 16 goals in two matches and is on track to eclipse the 58 goals he booted last year for the eventual premiers. Mildura coach Sam Kerridge is under an injury cloud heading into the match, but former SANFL player Brendan Dew is settling in nicely with 27 possessions last game. Prediction: Imperials 32 points HAMILTON v PORTLAND, Melville Oval, Hamilton After a winless stretch dating back to Anzac Day 2023, Portland has made a flying start to the Hampden league season. Knocked over Koroit in round 1 by 53 points and followed up with a 34-point win against Terang-Mortlake. Hamilton is winless, but led Warrnambool at three quarter time in round 1 before going down by six goals. Also led Camperdown at the last change in round 2 before being run down again in the final term. Portland coach Daniel Jackson other recruits, Tanner Lovell and Jake Edwards, are firing and Jeff Garlett kicked three goals in the season opener. Jack English has been in the best players in both matches for Hamilton this season. Prediction: Portland 26 points Originally published as Five Anzac Day country footy blockbusters and tips
