REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -Alphabet's self-driving unit Waymo said on Monday that it plans to build Jaguar I-PACE and Zeekr vehicles with its autonomous technology at a new plant in Arizona as soon as this year, with Canadian auto parts supplier partner Magna International. Waymo, which started as a small self-driving project within Google in 2009, has expanded slowly but steadily in a tricky autonomous vehicle market that has witnessed several casualties due to soaring investment, tight regulatory requirements and tough technological hurdles. The Mesa, Arizona, factory is a multi-million dollar investment and has created hundreds of jobs, Waymo said in a statement, adding that this is a step towards scaling Waymo One — the company's fully autonomous ride-hailing service. Waymo One is providing more than 250,000 paid passenger trips each week in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin after more than 4 million paid trips in 2024. It plans to add Atlanta and Miami and then Washington, D.C., by 2026. The company plans to build over 2,000 more fully autonomous Jaguar I-PACE vehicles through next year and integrate Waymo's technology on new vehicle platforms, starting with Zeekr RT this year, the statement said. "The Waymo Driver integration plant in Mesa is the epicenter of our future growth plans," said Ryan McNamara, vice president of operations at Waymo. Detroit Auto Show announces Jan. 14-25 as its 2026 event schedule

The Detroit Auto Show has announced its 2026 dates, keeping the traditional mid-January schedule that the event resumed in 2025. The 2026 show will take place Jan. 14-25 at Huntington Place in Detroit. The media and industry programming will be Jan. 14 and 15. The charity preview will be Jan. 16. The public is invited to see the show Jan. 17-25. "Having just concluded the show's incredible return to its traditional time slot, we're excited to announce next year's dates and keep the momentum going," said 2026 Detroit Auto Show Chair Todd Szott. "January is synonymous with cars in the Motor City, and we expect plenty of auto-centric experiences to, once again, be on tap for the 2026 show." Other details confirmed for the next event include a Racing Day, presented by the Detroit Grand Prix. The 2025 Detroit Auto Show featured 34 brands and nearly 500 vehicles with related programs and partnerships. Estimated attendance was in the hundreds of thousands; with an economic impact of up to $370 million. The 2026 schedule was tweaked a bit as compared to 2025; pushing preview days ahead of the charity event date. "This is how it was for many years, and it worked very well for OEMs and suppliers," said Joe Rohatynski, vice president, Corporate Communications, AISIN. The event that is now Detroit's annual auto show began in 1965, and for a time was known as the North American International Auto Show. The 2020 event was intended to take place in June, the move planned a couple of years in advance to allow for outdoor events along with the indoor venue activities. However, both the 2020 and 2021 shows were canceled because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show took place with September dates in 2022 and 2023. The video above previously aired on Jan. 13, 2025.
