Putin appoints new Russian ambassador to US
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Aleksandr Darchiev as Russia's new ambassador to the US. According to the document, published on the state portal for legal information on Thursday, Darchiev will also be Moscow's permanent observer at the Organization of American States (OAS). The administration of US President Donald Trump handed over to Russia a note with the approval of Darchiev's candidacy as ambassador during talks between the sides in Istanbul in late February, which were aimed at restoring the proper functioning of the diplomatic missions of the two countries. Darchiev, who had headed the North Atlantic Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry since 2021, led the country's delegation during the meeting. The post of ambassador to the US had remained vacant since Anatoly Antonov was relieved of his duties on October 10, 2024. Darchiev, 64, worked at the Russian Embassy in Washington as minister-counselor from 2005 to 2010. He was also the envoy to Canada from 2014 to 2021.

US approves Moscow's new envoy
The United States has approved Aleksandr Darchiev as Moscow's new ambassador to Washington, Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced after bilateral talks in Türkiye this week. Darchiev, a senior diplomat with more than 30 years of experience, currently heads the Foreign Ministry's North Atlantic Department. He previously served as Russia's ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021 and has held several high-ranking positions within the ministry, including deputy director of the North America Department and counselor at the Russian embassy in Washington. His appointment follows diplomatic discussions in Istanbul on Thursday, where Russian and US officials addressed issues affecting their embassies. The two nations are working to mend strained relations that deteriorated under the previous administration of US President Joe Biden. Talks focused on resuming regular operations at the US embassy in Moscow and the Russian embassy in Washington, with both sides identifying 'concrete initial steps,' according to the US State Department. In a statement on Friday, Russia's Foreign Ministry emphasized that normalization should be a reciprocal process. Both countries have imposed various restrictions on each other in recent years, including reducing diplomatic staff, limiting banking access, and seizing diplomatic properties. Moscow maintains its measures are in direct response to actions taken by Washington. Darchiev represented Russia at the talks, while the US delegation was led by Sonata Coulter, deputy assistant secretary of state for Eurasian affairs. The negotiations followed an earlier round of discussions on February 18 in Riyadh, where both sides agreed to restore staffing levels at their respective diplomatic missions. Darchiev's predecessor, Anatoly Antonov, served as Russia's ambassador to the US for seven years before returning to Moscow in October 2024.

Russia asks for resumption of direct flights to, from US
Russia's top diplomat made a request Friday for the U.S. to reopen its air space to direct flights between the countries, as President Trump has sought to warm relations with Moscow as he pushes for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The request came during a meeting Thursday between Alexander Darchiev, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North Atlantic Department, and Sonata Coulter, a U.S. deputy assistant secretary of State. 'The need for practical results aimed at creating conditions for improving bilateral relations in the interests of the peoples of our countries was particularly emphasized,' Russia said in a statement after the meeting, according to Reuters. 'In concrete terms, the American side was asked to consider the possibility of restoring direct air traffic.' The U.S. and many allies restricted flights from Russia soon after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On March 1, then-President Biden announced Russian aircraft were prohibited from entering U.S. airspace. However, Trump has signaled an openness to engage in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine, while criticizing Biden for not pursuing direct diplomacy with the Russian leader. Maria Zakharova, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said Russia is looking to resolve 'irritants' from past administrations that prevented bilateral dialogue. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
