Big Ten transfer QB headed to HBCU
North Carolina A&T has landed a commitment from former Big Ten quarterback in Maryland transfer Champ Long, adding much-needed depth to the HBCU program's quarterback room following multiple injuries. The HBCU is looking to rebound from a 1-11 campaign in 2024 and recently turned to former Fort Valley State head coach and longtime NC A&T assistant Shawn Gibbs to lead the rebuild. Long arrives at North Carolina A&T via the transfer portal after two seasons at Maryland. The Jersey City, NJ native saw limited action at the Big Ten program, completing one pass for 10 yards in a 2024 appearance against Penn State. As a freshman in 2023, he did not see game action. His high school résumé, however, tells a different story. At St. Peter's Prep, Long threw for over 4,500 yards and 51 touchdowns across two seasons. He was named to the 2022 USA Today First Team All-New Jersey and was a finalist for New Jersey high school player of the year. In his senior year, he completed 168 of 208 passes for 2,638 yards and 31 touchdowns, adding eight scores on the ground. He also handled punting duties, averaging 40.1 yards per kick. The move to this HBCU program comes at a crucial time. Starting quarterback KJ White suffered a significant injury during spring camp, and veteran backup Alston Hooker was also sidelined with an injury. Long's arrival from Maryland offers the Aggies a dual-threat option with a winning pedigree and Power Five training. North Carolina A&T, one of the most storied HBCU programs in recent history, hopes Long's addition can help spark a turnaround under Gibbs. His experience at in the Big Ten and his high school success give the Aggies a quarterback capable of competing immediately in 2025. Ohio State adds former HBCU quarterback
Ohio State has added a former HBCU quarterback to its depth chart, as Eli Brickhandler announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on Tuesday via social media. The former North Carolina A&T signal caller joins Ohio State with two years of eligibility remaining. Brickhandler began his college career at HBCU North Carolina A&T, where he played in seven games as a redshirt freshman in 2022. That season, he completed 28-of-56 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 43 times for 176 yards and two more scores. As a true freshman, he saw limited action but still tossed a touchdown pass in two appearances. After transferring to Houston Christian prior to the 2024 season, Brickhandler appeared in eight games, throwing for 557 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 264 yards on 63 attempts. Before his college career, Brickhandler was a standout at Pittsburg High School in California and spent a prep year at AHOP Christian Leadership Academy. In high school, he earned all-league honors as a junior and senior, throwing for nearly 2,800 yards and rushing for over 800 more as a senior. Although he is expected to begin his time at Ohio State lower on the depth chart behind highly touted quarterbacks Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz, and Tavien St. Clair, Brickhandler brings experience and athleticism to the Buckeyes' quarterback room. His journey from an FCS HBCU to one of the nation's premier programs is a testament to his perseverance and becomes one of the few quarterbacks in recent memory to make the leap from the FCS to Ohio State, continuing a unique path that began at North Carolina A&T. His story adds another chapter to the growing list of HBCU athletes making moves across all levels of college football. GREENSBORO, NC - North Carolina A&T captured the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship in dominant fashion, scoring 177 points to claim their first outdoor league title since winning the MEAC in 2021. The event was hosted at A&T's Marcus T. Johnson Track, where the Aggies overcame early concerns and surged past Monmouth (141 points) and William & Mary (115 points) to take the crown. The championship performance completed a sweep of the 2025 CAA indoor and outdoor titles for the Aggie men and marked the program's seventh outdoor conference championship overall. Despite scoring no points in the 110-meter hurdles-an event A&T had dominated in recent years-the team rebounded strongly with standout performances across the board. A\&T won six events on Thursday, including the 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles, shot put, triple jump, and the 4x400m relay. In the 400m, the Aggies swept the top four spots, led by sophomore Xzaviah Taylor's personal-best 46.01. Taylor also captured the 400m hurdles title in 51.07, finishing just ahead of his twin brother Isaiah Taylor. The field events were just as crucial. Senior Brayden Hodgest led a 1-2-3 sweep in the shot put with a winning throw of 57'9.5". He also placed third in the discus behind Carlos Alexander and Alex Henry, who finished second and fourth, respectively. Junior Dyimond Walker and Dawson Grogan went 1-2 in the 800m with both recording personal bests. North Carolina A&T then closed the meet by winning the 4x400m relay in 3:07.49, capping off a statement performance on their home track. With dominant depth in the sprints and throws, North Carolina A&T's championship run affirmed its status as a CAA powerhouse on the rise. HBCU track program inks six-figure deal with hair care brand
North Carolina A&T, the nation's largest HBCU, has announced a groundbreaking multi-year partnership with Mielle, a leading textured hair care brand, marking a \$200,000 investment in its nationally ranked track and field programs. This move further solidifies the role of HBCU athletic programs as key spaces for brand alignment, empowerment, and long-term impact. As the official textured hair brand of A\&T's track and field program, Mielle's commitment goes beyond surface-level support. The company will provide annual product donations, educational resources on hair health, and direct funding to cover essentials like training, travel, and equipment. This partnership also reflects a deeper mission. Mielle, led by founder and CEO Monique Rodriguez, has built its reputation on community reinvestment. By aligning with North Carolina A&T, Mielle is not only amplifying a leading HBCU athletic brand but also fostering future leaders shaped by discipline, excellence, and culture. The Aggies' track and field legacy speaks for itself-with multiple national titles, NCAA honors, and most recently, a CAA championship under Coach Allen Johnson. With this partnership, Mielle and NC A&T continue to push boundaries, proving that HBCU excellence is worth the investment-and ready to take center stage.
