18-year-old passenger killed after a crash on I-77 in Iredell County: NCSHP

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A crash into two parked cars on the side of I-77 in Troutman killed an 18-year-old man and left a 74-year-old man in critical condition, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, troopers responded to the crash on I-77 North near mile marker 43. Officials said a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz and a 2015 Dodge Caravan were partially stopped in the left lane due to a previous crash. A 2003 Toyota Corolla was going north on I-77, failed to reduce speed and struck the Dodge, causing it to crash into the Hyundai and both drivers who were standing by the Dodge. 'Lucky to be alive'; Driver hurt in reported road-rage shooting on I-85 in Rowan County, suspect wanted The driver of the Corolla, 22-year-old Emma Leigh Garwood, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; however, her passenger, 18-year-old Shane Charles McCurdy, died of his injuries at the scene, highway patrol said. The drivers of the Dodge and Hyundai, a 74-year-old man and a 72-year-old man, respectively, were both taken to a local hospital. The Dodge driver is in critical condition, while the Hyundai driver had non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators don't believe impairment was a factor in the collision. Garwood was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed. The roadway was closed for about two hours during the on-scene investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Hendersonville man in coma but stable after Memorial Day weekend crash in Mills River

A Hendersonville man is in a coma after a serious highway crash May 25 in Mills River. Samuel Mullenax, 31, of Hendersonville, was in stable condition as of May 26. He was driving a Ford Explorer on North Carolina Highway 280 Sunday night when he collided with an empty gasoline tanker truck whose driver had made an improper left turn out of a driveway, North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Cory Hipp told the Times-News. Hipp said that doctors at Mission Hospital, where Mullenax is being treated, told the Highway Patrol that he was 'placed in a coma, basically, because he's in and out of surgery so much,' but that he would make a full recovery. 'We don't believe impairment was a factor,' he added. He said this type of crash, involving a driver making a left turn onto a highway, is 'one of the more prevalent crashes that we see on a five-lane highway." NC 280 was choked down to one lane in each direction near the site of the accident, near Gash Road, for around three hours afterward, Hipp said. Traffic from vacation travel tends to contribute to higher rates of crashes over holiday weekends, he said, but this crash was between two local drivers at 9:41 p.m., when the roads were relatively clear. 'I'm not sure that anything would have happened' differently even if the truck had been full of gasoline, because the crash 'didn't penetrate the tanker,' he said. The driver of the tanker truck, Stephen Neill, 30, of Hendersonville, did not suffer any injuries and was charged with failure to yield. More: Weather in Asheville, Western NC: Flood risks? Virginia State Police collaborates with North Carolina State Highway Patrol to reduce impaired driving

VIRGINIA (WAVY) – Virginia State Police (VSP) and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) participated at a sobriety checkpoint along state lines to reduce impaired driving Saturday night. Enforcement at the checkpoint was present for two hours and in total 57 vehicles came through the checkpoint and four vehicles were stopped. Violations included state inspections and vehicle registrations, with no DUI arrests. This collaborative effort was part of a national Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E), intended to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries due to impaired driving, speed and failing to wear a seat belt throughout Memorial Day weekend. Results from the C.A.R.E enforcement efforts will be provided later this week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
