Storm-toppled plane crushes worker during towing attempt at Fort Lauderdale airport
A worker was seriously injured Saturday while helping upright a storm-damaged aircraft inside a hangar at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE), fire officials said. The small plane was flipped by Friday's storms According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the incident happened just after 12 p.m. as a towing company attempted to upright a plane that had flipped during Friday's fast-moving thunderstorm. As the plane was being lifted, one of its wings came down on a worker, causing serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. He was transported to Broward Health Medical Center. Authorities said he did not lose consciousness. The aircraft had been one of several damaged by the severe weather that swept through Broward County Friday evening. Friday storms cause widespread damage across Broward The storm system that set the stage for Saturday's accident left a trail of destruction across southern Broward. In Miramar, winds toppled fences and power lines, hurled debris across neighborhoods, and damaged homes. Residents described terrifying moments as the storm intensified with little warning. "As that happens, you just see wind and I start telling [the kids] to get inside and get away from the windows," said Joana Klaiss, whose home security camera captured her ushering her children to safety as debris flew past their windows. Multiple planes damaged at North Perry Airport In Pembroke Pines, the same storm system damaged multiple aircraft at North Perry Airport, forcing an emergency closure of the facility until Saturday morning. Officials with the Broward County Aviation Department said the damage assessment was ongoing. "Several aircraft were severely damaged," said Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spokesperson Arlene Satchell. "As a result, HWO is closed until 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 to allow the Broward County Aviation Department to continue an initial damage assessment at our general aviation airport." Hail, strong gusts and power outages across Broward Elsewhere in the county, residents experienced hail, power outages, and extremely limited visibility during the peak of the storm. "It felt like a mini hurricane," said Pembroke Pines resident Wendy Gomez, who reported hail, flickering lights and gusts strong enough to bring down tree limbs. Florida Power & Light crews worked through the evening to assess damage and restore electricity to affected areas. Recovery underway as crews respond to aftermath The incident at FXE highlights ongoing recovery efforts following the storm's impact. Authorities have not released the injured worker's identity or the name of the towing company involved. The National Weather Service has not confirmed whether the storm system produced a tornado, but investigations into storm intensity and damage remain underway. South Florida is under a new NEXT Weather Alert Day this Saturday as the region braces for the potential of isolated strong storms.

Storm tears through parts of Broward, damaging homes, planes at North Perry Airport and knocking out power
A fast-moving thunderstorm brought damaging winds, hail and widespread debris across southern Broward County on Friday evening, leaving behind torn fences, downed power lines and several damaged planes at North Perry Airport. Storm hits Miramar neighborhoods In Miramar, the neighborhood near Sunshine Boulevard and Southwest 27th Court was littered with debris. Downed power lines and shed pieces were scattered across driveways, and at least one street remained closed Friday night due to storm damage. Joana Klaiss, a resident of the area, described the frightening moment the storm struck while she and her children were inside their home. "As that happens, you just see wind and I start telling them to get inside and get away from the windows because all I saw was the shed—I thought it was a trampoline—start coming towards the house," Klaiss told CBS News Miami. "Not even realizing my whole fence was going to be taken out also." Home surveillance video captured Klaiss pushing her teenage son back inside as wind conditions quickly worsened. Pieces of a neighbor's shed ended up tangled in power lines in front of her house. Nearby, a resident's patio terrace landed on their roof along with a mango tree. "It was scary, but it happened so fast that it didn't hit me until after," Klaiss said. "I'm just glad everyone is okay and I just have to deal with the damages." Another resident, identified only as Eaton, described intense hail and whipping winds. "I just see a lot of ice just coming down. That was the hail. And then the rain just come down. Then five minutes passed and everything just started spinning like this, so I just got behind a column," he said. "God good! Yeah, without God there is nobody." Damage at North Perry Airport In nearby Pembroke Pines, strong winds damaged multiple aircraft at North Perry Airport, prompting an emergency closure of the facility. Hail, power outages and limited visibility Throughout the county, residents captured images and video of hail collecting in plant pots and yards. Visibility dropped dramatically during the storm, making for a treacherous evening commute. In Pembroke Pines, long-time resident Wendy Gomez said the storm felt like a "mini hurricane." "It lasted for 20 to 30 minutes. There was a lot of rain and the power flickered a few times," Gomez said. "We had hail, a lot of strong wind, but everything held up—just a few branches fell." "The gusts were very strong. That's why I called it a monsoon. Me and my daughter were saying, what are we having, a little mini hurricane?" Police said several power lines were knocked down near Palm Avenue and Northwest 72nd Avenue, leaving some homes temporarily without electricity. Florida Power & Light crews were seen in affected neighborhoods Friday evening, assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the recovery process.

North Perry Airport, roads closed overnight due to storm damage
Thunderstorms spread throughout South Florida from Friday afternoon into the evening, forcing closures of North Perry Airport and at least one Broward County road until Saturday morning. All of South Florida was at marginal risk for isolated to severe storms on Friday, though National Weather Service Miami forecasters said some impacts could continue into the early morning hours. Strong winds uprooted trees and knocked down power lines on Friday evening. The most severe damage reported was from more than 50 mph winds lifting a Cessna off the ground and onto a fuel truck at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. The area around North Perry Airport saw a severe storm about 6 p.m., and 'several aircraft were severely damaged,' airport spokesperson Arlene Satchell said in an email to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The airport will be closed until at least 7 a.m. Saturday for the Broward County Aviation Department to continue assessing damage, she said. Satchell did not know how many airplanes were damaged. Reports that the damage in Pembroke Pines was from a tornado are false, NWS Miami meteorologist Sammy Hadi told the Sun Sentinel. The environment on Friday was supportive for large hail, which there were some reports of locally, and straight line winds. The damage was due to 'a thunderstorm collapsing violently,' he said. Sunshine Boulevard in Miramar will be closed in both directions, starting at the 2600 block, until at at least midnight due to downed power lines and damage from the storms, said Janice McIntosh, a spokesperson for Miramar Police. Several electrical lines and trees were knocked down in the area of Palm Avenue and Northwest 72nd Avenue in Pembroke Pines, the police department said in a post on X urging people to drive with caution. Severe storm damages multiple planes at North Perry Airport; facility temporarily closed
A severe thunderstorm with strong, damaging winds tore through the area surrounding North Perry Airport on Friday evening, damaging several aircraft and prompting a temporary airport closure, officials said. "At approximately 6 p.m., the area surrounding North Perry Airport (HWO) experienced a severe thunderstorm, which brought strong damaging winds," said Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spokesperson Arlene Satchell. "Several aircraft were severely damaged. As a result, HWO is closed until 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 to allow the Broward County Aviation Department to continue an initial damage assessment at our general aviation airport." Elsewhere, Pembroke Pines police said several power lines were knocked down between Palm Avenue and Northwest 72nd Avenue near Pines Boulevard. Some homes in the area may be without power temporarily, authorities said.

Small plane crash-lands on Miramar elementary school property
A small plane crash-landed on the property of a Miramar elementary school Wednesday afternoon, officials say. No one was injured. About 1 p.m., a single-engine Piper Cherokee took off from North Perry Airport, according to FlightAware. A few minutes later, it landed in a field west of Coconut Palm Elementary on Monarch Lakes Boulevard, according to Miramar Fire Rescue. The plane was damaged, but the two people on board extricated themselves and said they had no injuries. No structures were involved or damaged. ' … while on school property it is set back and did not impact the school from continuing normal operations at this time,' said Miramar Fire Rescue spokesperson Tara Smith. The school itself was not placed on lockdown, said Janice McIntosh, a spokesperson for Miramar Police. Miramar Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. Officials did not say where the plane was heading when it crashed. Most of its previous flights took off from North Perry, many of them returning to North Perry a short while later, according to FlightAware. The plane is owned by a company called N3055B LLC, based in Delaware, according to FAA records. Miramar has been the site of several small plane crashes over the years, due to its proximity to North Perry Airport, one of Florida's busiest general aviation airports.
