Police investigating alleged arson at much-loved York community project
Police are investigating an alleged arson at a much-loved York community project. Vandals targeted The Foss Fairy Trail, located along the banks of the River Foss across from Huntington Road, over the weekend, organisers said on Monday (May 26). On Tuesday, Sergeant Ben Ambler, from North Yorkshire Police's Community Safety Hub, confirmed that the incident is under investigation. He said: 'We are working with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service following a number of reports of small outdoor fires believed to have been started deliberately in York over the last month, including at The Foss Fairy Trail. "Our Neighbourhood Policing team is conducting patrols whilst enquiries are ongoing.' Tracy Ostle, chair of the Foss Fairy Trail, told The Press on Monday that it is the 108th incident of vandalism since the trail was created four and a half years ago – and she said she was 'exhausted' by constantly repairing damage. Read more: Foss Fairy Trail near Huntington Road targeted by vandals Tracy said there was a 'massive fire' at the trail on Sunday, adding: 'We set up a pagoda for people, that had been ripped down and added to the fire, and so had a chalkboard we had put there for children to play on. 'After that, we went around a corner and there was another fire there. Our bug house had been kicked down, there was used needles on the floor, and massive logs that had been dragged there from somewhere else.' Sgt Ambler urged anyone with information about the damage to contact North Yorkshire Police. "If you witnessed anything, noticed anything suspicious, or have information that can assist our enquiries, please contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference number 12250094113. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously via their website or on 0800 555 111,' he said. Tracy is looking for donations of wet cement to fix some of the houses on the trail and compost to fill the pond – something that she is 'constantly trying to fix'. Those who can help are asked to email thefossfairytrail@ or contact the project on Facebook.

Farm blaze 'started deliberately'
A blaze in a derelict building at a pig farm in North Yorkshire is thought to have been started deliberately, the fire service has said. Fire crews from Selby and Acomb were called to the site on Magazine Road in Barlby at about 20:20 BST on Monday. The blaze covered an area of about 33ft by 10ft (10m x 3m) and had spread to the building's roof, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Two youths had reportedly been spotted near the scene of the fire and investigations were continuing, police said. A fire service spokesperson said: "Crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet while wearing breathing apparatus equipment. "The cause of the fire was believed to be deliberate and the incident was left with police to investigate." Anyone who saw what had happened, or who had information which could help the inquiry into the blaze, was asked to contact North Yorkshire Police. Incidents from County Durham and Darlington that you may have missed this week
Here are just a few breaking incidents from across County Durham, Darlington and beyond that you may have missed this week. A man passing away in an incident abroad, several crashes and an alleged street brawl are just some of the incidents that have taken place in the region this week. Here's a roundup. Val Thorens ski resort (Image: Alamy/PA) Starting the week, news emerged that a 27-year-old British man who died after being buried in an avalanche at a ski resort in the French Alps is understood to be from North Yorkshire. The fatal incident took place shortly after 10am on Thursday (April 17) at the Val Thorens ski resort in the Savoie region of south-west France, according to prosecutor Benoît Bachelet. The man, who had been lying at the side of the road, was buried in the snow and carried about 15 metres by its force. Police officers in the area were alerted by a witness and managed to pull him from the snow, finding him in cardiac arrest. He was given first aid at the scene and taken to a hospital in Grenoble, in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, where he later died that evening. Police were in Ferryhill on Easter Monday after reports of a man with a gun. A caller who was driving past saw a group of men- believing they were in possession of a gun on Broom Road in Ferryhill just before 2.30pm on April 21. Officers, including armed units, responded to the scene and upon further investigation, it was determined that the item in question was a large paint gun. No one was believed to be injured and enquiries into the incident are ongoing. On Wednesday, a person was airlifted to hospital after a car flipped onto its roof during a serious A19 crash. Police, fire, and ambulance crews were called to the major route near the Cleveland Tontine on Wednesday (April 23) after a car was left on its roof in a hedge. Two air ambulances were called to the scene at around 5pm, with firefighters working to free a person who was trapped inside the silver vehicle and unable to free themselves. Dramatic pictures show the car on its roof with an air ambulance in the background, with the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service saying the person was safely removed and handed over to paramedics. (Image: GOOGLE) A man in his 60s has died after he had a medical episode in his van, which then rolled back onto the road and crashed with other cars. Emergency services were called to the A19 between the Moorfarm Roundabout and Killingworth in Newcastle yesterday (April 23) following reports of a crash. The stretch of road was close for several hours and caused long tailbacks. Police say a van driver, who had pulled into a layby, is believed to have suffered a medical episode but had rolled back onto the road into oncoming cars. Despite the best efforts of medics, he sadly died at the scene. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a street fight broke out in Darlington town centre. The men, aged 28 and 29, were arrested at the scene in the town centre after officers were called to reports of three men fighting near the indoor market, yesterday (April 24) at 1.15pm.
