Players furious as Wolves fail to apply for promotion
Wolverhampton Wanderers decided not to submit a promotion application for their women's team this season, with players saying they only discovered their efforts to go up had been futile after the campaign's final game. Players have strongly criticised the club on X and their midfielder, Beth Merrick, has questioned its 'ambitions', as well as its 'honesty and transparency'. Wolves, in the third-tier Northern Premier Division, went into last Sunday's final round with a small chance of overhauling Nottingham Forest at the top. Had they done so, they would have been entitled to promotion to the Championship. Forest's 7-2 win over West Bromwich Albion meant they were promoted in any case, but this result proved academic because Wolves declined to submit a promotion bid. Due in

Premier League club slammed as women's team discover promotion bid was NOT submitted
Wolves women finished second in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division behind Nottingham Forest but were left "devastated" after discovering the club never submitted their bid to play in the Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers have been slammed by players from their women's team after failing to submit a bid for them to play in the Championship next season. After finishing second in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division with 55 points, Wolves Women missed out on promotion as Nottingham Forest pipped them to it by three points. But Wolves never would have been promoted - even if they finished higher than Forest - because the club never lodged their bid to play in the second tier in the first place, according to player Beth Merrick. Only one team is promoted to the Women's Championship from the third tier but midfielder Merrick said she and the rest of her team-mates have been left "absolutely devastated" to discover that their efforts were in vain regardless and questioned the club's ambitions for the women's side. Wolves still had a chance of winning the division ahead of their clash against Liverpool Feds - which they won 6-0 - but Forest kept their place at the top by beating West Brom 7-2 and Merrick claims players were informed about the decision shortly after their game. "Going into today's final game still in contention of winning the league and having to write this is crazy," she wrote in a statement on Twitter. "Imagine fighting for promotion all season to find out our championship bid was never submitted. "As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the club's ambitions for the women's team. For our staff to have to deliver this news to us moments after is astonishing. "Some of us have been a part of this club for many years with endless amount of success, which has grown year on year through all the highs and the lows. Our players, our staff and fans deserve so much better. The staff have put in hours of dedication for a bid to never be submitted. The gravitas that we have collectively worked hard to create, has supported women's football growth and the movement of 'If you can see it, you can be it' throughout Wolverhampton. "It's not about the money, it's about the honesty and transparency - ironically not very apparent with the #OnePack campaign." Merrick was backed up by team-mate Lily Simkin, who said the team feel "let down" and that the playing group "deserve better". According to the Express and Star, Wolves could not commit to the cost of the application and feared the men's team could be relegated this season - which would have limited their spending power. The men's side were as low as 17th and two points off the bottom three in early February, only to surge to safety with a run of six consecutive Premier League victories. It goes on to say that Wolves have submitted the application to play in the Women's Championship in previous years but chose not to this season, despite the team competing at the top with Forest. Fans were not impressed by Merrick's revelation as one said: "Absolutely horrific And not a surprise Our leadership at Wolves doesn't care about the women's game. It's just a nice to have for them. Sorry you're all treated like this." Another added: "Completely fuming at this. Absolute solidarity with you and the girls, as well as @MaccaD11 and the staff. You made me and many, many others fans proud with how you pushed through the whole season." Mirror Football has reached out to Wolverhampton Wanderers for comment in response to Merrick's claims.

Promoted Forest plan to 'hit ground running'
Nottingham Forest Women have already begun preparations for Championship football after completing a league and cup double on Sunday, according to head coach Carly claimed the FA Women's Northern Premier Division title – and promotion to the second tier – with a resounding 7-2 victory over West Brom at the City Ground, having already secured the National League Cup in who joined the club at the start of the 2023-24 season, told BBC Radio Nottingham that competing at national level for the first time will hold no fears."It's been in the making for the two years we've been in this process – our mantra's always been 'Championship-ready'," she said."We've been working above and beyond since we started on our journey so that, when we did achieve our goal, we know we're ready to go and we're not chasing our tails."We now look ahead to recruitment, getting the right players in the building and we'll hit the ground running from the start of next season."Despite falling behind against West Brom, Forest struck back through a Charlie Wellings penalty and Sophie Domingo gave them the lead before Mel Johnson blitzed the Baggies with four goals in the second half, broken up by a Holly Manders strike."This group are resilient, there was a calmness in them when the (West Brom) goal went in and what a response," Davies added. "We know we're always going to create chances and score goals."Mel's probably the most relaxed person in front of goal, almost horizontal at times – that's what makes her so good. She scores chances that she shouldn't have the audacity to score."

Nottingham Forest sign Newcastle United attacker Haywood on loan
The Tricky Trees announced the news via a post on their official club website just a short time ago. The 29-year-old joined parent club Newcastle United on a free transfer last summer after leaving former club Sheffield United. Haywood has gone on to make nine appearances for The Magpies in the Barclays Women's Championship, although the player has struggled for regular starts. Haywood needs more minutes in the second half of the season and she will now hope to enjoy FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division title success in her spell at Nottingham Forest. After signing on at The City Ground, Haywood said 'I'm excited to be here and hopefully hit the ground running. I just love what the Club is about, the ambition and the aim; I'm excited to be a part of that. 'I'd like to add goals to this team. I'm happy to play whatever role Carly [Davies] sees fit, I just want to help contribute to that goal of promotion ultimately and whatever way that comes, I will be happy as long as that's achieved.' Haywood could go straight into the Nottingham Forest squad for Sunday's FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division fixture at Halifax.
