Police recover body of man who jumped from Channel Island Bridge near Darwin

Police have recovered the body of a 55-year-old man who jumped off the Channel Island bridge near Darwin on Friday night and was unable to swim back to shore. A Northern Territory Police Force spokesperson said the man — who the ABC has chosen not to name following his death — "voluntarily" jumped off the bridge "accompanied by workmates" some time after 9pm. They said the man was reportedly "laughing and active within the water", but began drifting away "despite his friends' attempts to encourage him" to return to dry land. "He was last seen in the middle of the channel, drifting toward Darwin City in strong tidal currents," the police spokesperson said. "Witnesses observed him for approximately two minutes before losing sight of him." Police launched an extensive search and rescue operation on Friday night with help from a CareFlight helicopter and the port authority, and were joined by NT Emergency Service volunteers and others when the search resumed on Saturday morning. However, a body matching the man's description was spotted in the water about 11.30am and recovered, before he was officially declared deceased. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

‘It's gotta stop': Mourners' plea at vigil for Indigenous man who died in custody

Hundreds of mourners gathered for an emotional vigil at the Alice Springs supermarket where a young man died while in custody, as the Northern Territory Police rejected calls for an external investigation into the incident. Warlpiri elders have called for witnesses to Tuesday's tragedy to come forward and help understand what led to the death of 24-year-old Kumanjayi White – named in this masthead with the family's permission – who first had an altercation with a security guard before being restrained by two police officers. Ned Hargraves, a Warlpiri elder, called the vigil for his grandson at the Coles supermarket from noon on Friday, leading to an outpouring of grief and anger among the mourners. 'Every day our black fellas, yapa, getting stopped,' Hargraves told the vigil. 'It's gotta stop. We respect you – how about us? Respect us. 'We were meant to be working together, but we're not.' Hargraves thanked the community for their support and said he hoped it wouldn't happen again. 'Hear our words,' he said. 'Hear us, this cannot keep going.' Messages and tributes of bouquets and gum leaves were left at the front of the store where mourners comforted each other and wailed with grief.

‘Met with brutal force': Thorpe demands answers after man dies in police custody in Alice Springs supermarket

Victorian independent senator Lidia Thorpe has described the death of a 24-year-old man in police custody at an Alice Springs supermarket as part of a brutal pattern of Indigenous people dying at the hands of police. The man was inside a Coles supermarket in central Alice Springs about 1.10pm (ACST) on Tuesday when he allegedly became involved in a scuffle with a security guard. The man was hungry and in need of care, Thorpe said, adding that he was a ward of the state and disabled. NT senator and Indigenous Affairs minister Malarndirri McCarthy called the man's death a 'shocking tragedy'. In a statement, Northern Territory Police said: 'Two police officers were in the store at the time of the incident and restrained the adult male. Loading 'A short time later, the man stopped breathing and CPR was commenced. St John Ambulance attended the scene, and the man was conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after 2.20pm.' Major Crime Section detectives are investigating and will prepare a report for the NT coroner. In a press conference on Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst said security guards initially confronted the man as he was allegedly putting items down the front of his clothes.

Close call for pedestrians in Alice Springs CBD as driver allegedly attempts to run down victim in domestic violence act

Several pedestrians nearly became collateral damage in an alleged domestic violence attack on Monday. A man in a white Holden Commodore mounted the kerb in an attempt to hit a woman on the pathway of Todd St in the CBD of Alice Springs at about 2pm, Northern Territory Police said. He nearly hit other pedestrians as he allegedly drove at the woman known to him, and then crashed. The man got himself out of the wreck and continued to chase the woman, police allege. He fled the scene, but police arrested the 39-year-old at a home at about 4.45pm that day. He was allegedly violent to police and attempted to resist arrest. The man has been charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering, engaging in conduct contravening DVO, assaulting police, and resisting arrest. He faced Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday, and remains in custody. He is next set to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on August 7.
