Neighbors seek answers in deaths of two Northfield Center Township residents
Neighbors of two Northfield Center Township residents who died in a June 6 shooting were seeking answers the morning after the incident. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said June 6 that the man and woman, both 48, suffered gunshot wounds. The woman died at the Meadow Brooke Way home, and the man died after being taken to Summa Akron City Hospital. "This isn't the neighborhood for domestic disputes, if that's what it was," said Joe Vega, who lives in the Meadow Brooke Way neighborhood near the location of the shootings. Vega said the Sheriff's Office was joined by Macedonia and Boston Heights police at the scene. He found out about the incident after making a run to the local GetGo gas station. "They had police surrounding this whole area," he said. "They had caution tape everywhere." More: Akron man arrested after stabbing leaves 1 dead and stepfather of suspect injured Vega said his family and other residents were in disbelief. "This is a very quiet neighborhood," he said. "We all walk our dogs and wave to each other." Vega said residents were trying to find more details on the incident, wanting assurances that police weren't looking for a suspect on the loose. "Out of respect to this community, we need to know what's going on," Vega said. A law enforcement officer on the scene June 7 said of the shootings, "There wasn't a third party." He said he wasn't authorized to give further information. Ranbir Kour, who lives across the street from the home where the shooting took place, said she didn't hear gunshots and found out from a daughter in another city what had taken place. "I didn't know anything," she said. "(It is) sad news, oh my God." A juvenile female in the residence was unharmed and released to Summit County Children Services, the Sheriff's Office stated in a June 6 news release. Vega said he believed there were two children in the family, one of them a 21-year-old adult. The identities of the deceased are being withheld until notifications are made to the family. Exams of the bodies were being conducted June 7 by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's Detective Bureau and the medical examiner's office.
