Trump Says He Spoke to Putin About Ukraine, Iran

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he discussed the recent drone attacks by Ukraine on Russia and developments concerning Iran in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the conversation, Putin told Trump that Russia will have to respond to the Ukrainian drone attacks, the US president said. "It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace," he said in a Truth Social Post. "I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement."

Trump says Putin told him in phone call he will respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attacks

President Donald Trump said he spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, but that the conversation would not yield an immediate end to the war in Ukraine. The call came after an audacious Ukrainian drone attack on Russian airfields over the weekend. Trump said he discussed the matter with Putin in their 75-minute phone call. 'We discussed the attack on Russia's docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.' 'President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,' he went on. Trump said he also discussed Iran with Putin as he works to complete a nuclear agreement with Tehran. 'We also discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran's decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly!' he wrote. 'I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement.' He said Putin would likely join discussions with Iran. 'President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion. It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!' Trump wrote. This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Trump hints at ‘good news' on Iran

President Trump on Sunday said his administration had 'some very good talks with Iran' and suggested that positive news could be coming from the negotiations. 'Let's see what happens, but I think we can have some good news on the Iran front,' Trump told reporters from the tarmac in Morristown, N.J., ahead of his departure for Washington, D.C. Delegations from the U.S. and Iran wrapped up a fifth round of talks on a potential new nuclear agreement in Rome on Friday. Trump during his first term withdrew the U.S. from a nuclear deal the Obama administration had negotiated but has since launched new efforts meant to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions and prevent a war. Iranian officials, according to a report by NBC, also described the most recent talks as positive. 'We have just completed one of the most professional rounds of talks. … We firmly stated Iran's position. … The fact that we are now on a reasonable path, in my view, is itself a sign of progress,' Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state TV, according to NBC. 'The proposals and solutions will be reviewed in respective capitals … and the next round of talks will be scheduled accordingly.' Trump on Sunday also said there had been good talks with Hamas on Gaza, and that he continued to hold talks with Israel. On Iran, he said he did not know if he would be 'telling anything good or bad, but I have a feeling we'll be telling you something good.' Trump covered several topics while talking to reporters, including his frustration with Russia President Vladimir Putin and his willingness to accept changes to his 'big, beautiful' tax cuts bill as it moves to the Senate. While two Senate GOP conservatives raised doubts about the bill on Sunday, Trump expressed confidence. 'I think the Senate is going to get there,' he said, even if there are some changes both minor and significant to the bill. 'The Speaker has been working with the leader of the Senate,' he said of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.). He said the two had done a great job and 'hopefully that'll be fine.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
