Oilers' Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (undisclosed injury) game-time call for Game 3

June 8 - Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said Sunday that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be a game-time decision for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday against the host Florida Panthers. The Oilers did not disclose Nugent-Hopkins' injury. The forward missed Sunday's practice. "We think (he'll be available)," Knoblauch said. "We'll play it by ear." Edmonton's fourth-leading scorer in the playoffs at 18 points (five goals, 13 assists), Nugent-Hopkins took 31 shifts totaling 25:45 of ice time in Friday's double-overtime Game 2. The Oilers dropped that contest 5-4 to allow the Panthers to even the series at 1-1. Nugent-Hopkins, who has spent 14 seasons with the franchise that selected him No. 1 overall in the 2011 draft, tallied 20 goals and 29 assists in 78 regular-season games. --Field Level Media

Major shake-up on Oilers defence, and ace forward missing from practice

This in from Bob Stauffer of the Oilers, news that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins wasn't on the ice for Sunday's practice, with Jeff Skinner filling in on the top line for him. The Oilers have also taken the blender to their d-man pairings and mixed them up from Game 2. The EdmontonOilers practice: J. Skinner-McDavid-Perry Kane-Draisaitl-Kapanen Frederic-Henrique-Brown Podkolzin-Janmark-Arvidsson Nurse-Bouchard Kulak-Walman Ekholm-Klingberg Skinner Pickard (RNH not on ice) 1. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins didn't miss a shift in all five periods of Game 2, but my Cult colleague Kurt Leavins noted that in the final part of the game Evander Kane took faceoffs on RNH's line. Does that indicate some kind of arm, hand or wrist injury for RNH? RNH has 18 points in 18 playoff games and has played much stronger two-way hockey at even strength than in his two previous playoff seasons. 2. The Oilers have switched up their d-man pairings but not in a way that makes a ton of obvious good sense. While Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse had good results in their short time together in the regular season (10 goals for, six against), they were something of a tire fire in early games against Los Angeles. They were on the ice for five goals for, ten against. The Oilers only found their defensive mojo when Bouchard and Nurse were split up, Bouchard playing with Brett Kulak (seven goals for, one against) Nurse with Troy Stecher (two goals for, none against). 3. That said a change here was essential. Nurse was struggling to make plays paired up with Brett Kulak. Too many icings and too many turnovers from Nurse. Perhaps the idea here is that Bouchard has now hit his full playoff stride and has reached the highest, most elite level when it comes to puck-moving so he can do the heavy-lifting in that regard when he's on-ice with Nurse. 4. I don't mind the other two pairings at all, though I note that if the Oilers stick with these pairings they will be going with three pairings that have rarely taken the ice together. 5. Ekholm and Klingberg have played together just eight minutes in the playoffs and just 17 minutes in the regular season, when they were zero goals for, two against. Walman and Kulak played just 12 minutes together at even strength in the regular season and just 17 minutes in the playoffs. I would have preferred to see Nurse go with Walman, keeping Ekholm and Bouchard together, and Kulak with Klingberg. But I'm glad the Oilers have responded and are moving away from the struggling Nurse-Kulak pairing. They've got to try to do something to get Nurse flying high again, as he was when paired with Troy Stecher. 6. If RNH is out, and has to play hurt, that's a huge blow but I'm also a fan of Jeff Skinner. He can make plays and his defensive game has improved.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins once again shining for Edmonton Oilers in post-season

Social Sharing Ryan Nugent-Hopkins collected the puck, moved into the offensive zone and put a pass on a platter for Evan Bouchard to blast home the Edmonton Oilers' opening goal Sunday. The longest-serving member of Edmonton's roster was at it again moments later, dishing to Connor McDavid for a slick 3-on-1 finish and a 2-0 lead. Then with his team on its heels in the third period as the Dallas Stars made a desperate push, Nugent-Hopkins helped weather that storm before finding Zach Hyman with a stretch feed for a back-breaking 4-1 advantage that allowed the home side to exhale inside a rocking Rogers Place. Edmonton centre Leon Draisaitl joked last season the versatile veteran was head coach Kris Knoblauch's favourite player, while McDavid called Nugent-Hopkins the team's "Swiss Army Knife" following an emphatic 6-1 victory in Game 3 of the NHL's Western Conference final. It's not hard to see why. WATCH | What would you do if the Oilers win the Stanley Cup? A staple on Edmonton's No. 1 power play, the first forward over the boards when a penalty needs killing, a winger on McDavid's line, and often moved to the middle in hopes of shutting down an opponent late in games, Nugent-Hopkins is Edmonton's man. "You want players with flexibility — Ryan's that kind of player," Knoblauch said. "Any time you have a player that can do so much, as a coach you're very thankful for it." McDavid said the value Nugent-Hopkins brings can't be overstated. "He's asked to do everything every single night," said the Oilers superstar captain. "He's playing really, really well. Another three assists, but just solid all over." The 32-year-old selected first overall at the 2011 draft had 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) during last season's run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final that saw Edmonton come up just short against the Florida Panthers. Nugent-Hopkins, who joined Wayne Gretzky as the second player in franchise history to register multiple points in each of the first three games of a conference or semifinal series, now has five goals and 11 assists in 14 playoff contests this spring. "We're all just kind of doing our thing and trying to chip in wherever we can," said the Burnaby, B.C., product. "Nice to see it go in and to capitalize when we get our chances." The CBC's Alicia Asquith breaks down the rare matinee game. Oilers goaltender and Edmonton native Stuart Skinner watched Nugent-Hopkins from afar growing up, and always came away impressed with his attention to detail. "He's such a huge part of our team and of our organization," the netminder said after an outstanding 33-save performance in a matinee affair that was closer than the score indicated. "He's a leader in here, the way that he shows his work ethic every single day and what he says in the room. He does it with a lot of composure, too. It is very impressive. "I've always been a huge fan." Nugent-Hopkins, who had a great chance at the side of the net in Sunday's second period that Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger denied, was in Edmonton for some of the proud franchise's darkest days as the Oilers missed the playoffs five straight seasons to open his career. He's made sure to once again take a step back and enjoy this ride. "It's always been a ton of fun to play here in front of these fans," Nugent-Hopkins said. "We've had some smaller runs. We've got a long way to go right now, but to feel that energy in the arena, it's pretty special."

Edmonton Oilers' Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Represents Elite Consistency With A Stat Reminiscent Of Gretzky

Once again, the longest-tenured Edmonton Oilers player found a way to step up to the moment. The Oilers' 6-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Sunday not only gave them a 2-1 series lead, but it also saw Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continue his strong pace this post-season. Nugent-Hopkins is averaging more than a point per game in the playoffs, with 16 points in 14 games. Among Oilers forwards, only Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have more. Nugent-Hopkins has five points in his last two games, putting him in some excellent company in a storied franchise history. He became just the second player in Oilers playoff history to put up multiple points in the first three games of an NHL conference final or semifinal. The other is the Wayne Gretzky, who had four multi-point outings to start the 1983 conference final, three in the 1984 edition and five in 1988, according to the NHL. Nugent-Hopkins' ability to affect a game at both ends of the ice and raise his performance gained the appreciation of all of the roster – especially Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, who stopped 33 of 34 shots on Sunday. 'He's been able to be a two-way player, (at) all three ends of the ice,' Skinner said post-game. 'He's just that type of guy. That's why he's such a huge part of our team, a huge part of the organization. Obviously, he's a leader in here, the way that he shows his work ethic every single day, what he says in the room. He does it with a lot of composure, too, so it's very impressive, and I've always been a huge fan of him.' MATHESON: Nugent-Hopkins was all over scoresheet for the Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers may have held their breath after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lost his when he smashed into the end boards with some help from Dallas Stars defenceman Lian Bichsel in the middle period Sunday, but he got his wits about him and, as usual, was all over the scoresheet in Game 3. Article content His play will never take your breath away like Connor McDavid, who plays the game like his hair's on fire under his helmet, but Nugent-Hopkins was effective as well, efficient with three primary assists. RNH set up goals by Evan Bouchard and McDavid (those two in 36 seconds late in the first period) and he fed Zach Hyman for a long pass that Hyman put away on a breakaway early in the third period to make it 4-1. Article content Article content He was plus 3, he had four shots including one that Stars' goalie Jake Oettinger brilliantly saved with the shaft of his stick before Nugent-Hopkins lost his balance and cartwheeled into the wall after an interaction with the 6-foot-7 Bichsel. Article content 'Going in there quick obviously, lost my breath there for a bit but I was fine. I don't know if I clipped feet with their D man but we both went barrelling in. I thought I had a chance to score … would have been nicer if it had gone in (board trouble), but we stuck with it,' said Nugent-Hopkins. Article content Again, he's never flashy, but he was all over the scoresheet, not as much as Hyman (two goals, plus 5, 10 hits) but RNH's three points gives him five over the last two games, and 16 in the NHL playoffs, seventh overall. He has 11 even-strength points, and is plus 9 in the 14 games, a security blanket in front of goaltender Stu Skinner. Article content 'For his whole career he's been able to be a two-way player, all three ends of the ice,' said Skinner, pausing to realize his gaffe, but maybe the neutral zone is part of his picture. 'He's such a huge part of our team and of our organization, with his work ethic every single day. And he does it a lot of composure.' Article content Again, it was a quiet three points, like it is many nights on a team with McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Article content 'I think we're all trying to do our thing, help when we can. Our line got a couple tonight (Bouchard and McDavid goals). Nice to capitalize when you get the chances,' said Nugent-Hopkins, whose assists all came 5-on-5. Article content 'I said last year that Nuge was my favourite player,' said Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch, who's able to play him on the PP, on the first PK forward unit, 5-on-5 with McDavid, or like in the third period when he was centering Evander Kane and Hyman. Article content Tough to be more of a favourite than McDavid, who had two daggers to make it 2-zip in the first and one in the last 20 seconds of the second period to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead when they were being manhandled on the shot clock. Article content Nugent-Hopkins set him up on a 3-on-1 jailbreak after Stars forward Jason Robertson was deep in the Oilers' end when he got caught up with Darnell Nurse. 'I probably got a little too low (to the net) and had to get the pass away pretty quickly … I think it was even rolling but he did a good job getting it away (under the bar). He put it in great spot,' said Nugent-Hopkins.
