PETALING JAYA : Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) chairman Nur Manuty has died at the age of 76.
An aide to Nur said the former PKR senator breathed his last at 11.27am at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Bernama reported.
Nur, who served as a senator from 2015 to 2018, was appointed as Ikim chairman in May 2023. He replaced Kamal Hassan, who died three months prior to that.
Nur used to lead the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, which was founded by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in 1971, and was also active in PKR, which he joined after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998.
He was appointed as the party's information chief in 2010 and was most recently head of PKR's religious bureau.
He contested general elections twice, in Larut and Bagan Serai in 1999 and 2013, but lost both times.
