Honoring Black History: Southern University School of Nursing voted best program in the US in school's history
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Southern University School of Nursing, which has been operating for 40 years, has made history by being voted the best nursing program in the United States by first for the HBCU.
Dr. Sandra Brown, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, said this isn't something they were expecting.
'We were competing against universities that are huge, like Emory University, University of Washington, University of Michigan, Florida State. And then there was Southern University,' Brown said.
According to Brown, Southern is not only Louisiana's largest producer of Black nurses but also ranks among the top three nationwide and leads the country in producing Black male nurses.
Statistics from the National University show the majority of healthcare providers are white (35.6%), followed by Black or African American (24%).
