PETALING JAYA : A woman was charged in the Seremban sessions court today with strangling and slapping her baby daughter in February.
The 35-year-old woman pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before judge Surita Budin, Harian Metro reported.
She is accused of abusing the 20-month-old girl in her care by strangling and slapping her in the cheek, causing injury.
The offence was alleged to have been committed at about 4am at Taman Sentul on Jalan Besar in Mantin, Nilai, on Feb 28.
The accused was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse, punishable under Section 31(1) of the same Act with a fine of up to RM50,000, up to 20 years' imprisonment, or both, if convicted.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi, who informed the court that the accused was suffering from mental health issues.
Nurul Balkis requested that the woman, who was unrepresented, should undergo a psychiatric evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court allowed the request and ordered for the woman to be sent to Permai Hospital in Johor Bahru for a psychiatric evaluation.
