Louise McSharry: My four go-to SPFs when you're looking for more than just sun protection

Alas, I'm not right. I know this because my own father is a sun cream denier. He's genuinely an intelligent man most of the time, but when it comes to sun cream, he simply refuses to engage. Each year, he develops a lobster-red shell, which peels and reforms multiple times over the course of the sunny season. We plead with him to apply sun cream, and he laughs in our faces. I'm not sure if it's misplaced arrogance or pure obstinance, but he simply won't do it and, at this stage, I've given up. I would never give up on you, though, and I'm sure that you would never dream of willingly burning or damaging your skin in the sun. Neither would I! So, let's talk about sun cream. At home, I tend to use whatever sun cream I have on the go for the kids, but if I'm going on holidays, I like to treat myself to something a little more grown up. With that in mind, here are some of my favourites. 1. Hawaiian Tropic Hydrating Protection Sunscreen Lotion (€22 via — This has been a go-to for me for many years, thanks to it being a pleasure to use and reasonably friendly on the wallet (it's frequently on special offer; the price here is the maximum you should expect to pay). This formula is beautifully hydrating via cocoa and shea butter, and I usually leave a holiday significantly more moisturised than I've arrived as a result. It's not sticky or greasy. Instead, it feels like a normal body lotion. Plus, its tropical scent gets you straight into the holiday vibe. 2. Nuxe Sun Oil Gold Shimmer High Protection (€33 via — It's hard for me to choose one product from Nuxe's sun protection range, because I am such a fan of them all, but this gal is definitely worth highlighting. If you're going to a wedding or special event, this product will keep you safe from the sun while delivering beautifully gleaming skin with flecks of golden shimmer. Nuxe products smell delicious, and this is no exception, with notes of sweet orange, Tiaré flower and vanilla. 3. Kopari Sunglaze Sheer Body Mist SPF30 (€41.40 via — This light spray delivers sun protection and glamour via a gorgeous coconut scent and light sheen. It dries quickly and is comfortable to wear, and I particularly like its spray bottle, which functions well and applies product evenly. It's also just pretty, almost like an accessory for the pool. 4. Bondi Sands Hydra UV Protect SPF 50+ (€9.35 via — This is another winner in the texture category thanks to its light formula, which feels more like a moisturiser than an SPF. It functions as a moisturiser too, leaving the skin soft and hydrated, and is fragrance-free for those of you who prefer that. Lost in translation Ginseng is an ingredient frequently seen on skincare packaging, but why is it so popular? Ginseng root has been reported to have anti-ageing, skin-whitening, anti-wrinkle and moisturising effects among other things, making it an ideal raw material for skincare products. Some research also indicates that the presence of ginseng can also reduce inflammation and improve skin elasticity. Aside from that, ginseng holds significant cultural importance in Korea, making it extra appealing for skincare brands from that part of the world. Something old… If you are unfamiliar with the phrase keratosis pilaris, you probably don't have it. This skin condition results in bumpy, rough skin, usually on the upper arms, thighs or bum, and while harmless, is unpleasant for many of those who experience it. Fortunately, there are lots of products to reduce its impact, mostly via gentle exfoliation. Byoma's Smoothing Body Polish (€14.68 via and Smoothing Body Serum (€15.81 via work well on their own, or as a pair, thanks to ingredients like exfoliating succinic acid and nourishing panthenol. Fortunately, Byoma's prices are relatively reasonable, so testing these guys out won't hit your bank account too hard. As with any skincare product, consistency is key if you want to get results, so regular use of the body polish in the shower and body serum afterwards is your best bet. ... Something new Joonbyrd is a bodycare brand founded by dermatologist Dr Alexis Granite, who's love of beauty products goes back to exploring her grandmother's makeup collection. That love, along with her expertise from decades working with patients on their skin challenges, has resulted in joyfully packaged, very effective products. Joonbyrd's latest launch is Kaleidoscope Body Serum (€88 for 100ml via a lightweight serum which delivers gentle exfoliation to smooth and brighten the skin as well as delivering hydration. This product is ideal for anyone who struggles with keratosis pilaris, aka chicken skin. The presence of azelaic and shikimic acid gently exfoliate, while nourishing ingredients like blueberry seed oil ensure the skin is left soft and supple. This is not an inexpensive product though, so you may wish to try the 15ml size (€22 via before investing in the large bottle.

Trinny London bronzer now under £5 in huge deal that saves £170 on summer beauty

Looking to bag a great deal on the best summer beauty products, or stock up your suitcase before your holiday? You won't want to miss this limited-edition beauty bundle, saving you over £170 If you love beauty – and also love a bargain – then you need to check out this way to bag a huge bundle of summer skin, hair, make-up and sunscreen treats for a fraction of their usual cost, including big name brands such as Trinny London, Nuxe and Hello Sunday. OK! Beauty Box, know for being one of the UK's best value beauty subscription services, has just released a limited edition, one-off-purchase Summer Beauty Box containing 12 brilliant products, eight of which as full size. Altogether the products inside are worth over £220 but the box costs £49.99 to buy – a saving of over £170. This means that if you divide the cost by the number of products inside, every item costs you around £4.16, making it an excellent way to stock up or try out some new things – especially as one of the products inside is worth £40 just on its own. Even better, if you're already an OK! Beauty Box subscriber then you can get the box for £39.99 instead, giving each product a value of around £3.33. If you're not yet signed up but considering it, you can do so here and get your first monthly beauty box for £8.99 instead of the usual £15. My personal highlights inside this Summer Beauty Box are the Trinny London bronzer (worth £25 and perfectly compact), Hello Sunday The Take-Out One Invisible Sun Stick SPF30 (just the thing for sun protection touch-ups) and a cute little travel-size bottle of cult classic Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or Florale. Here's exactly what you get for your £50: Hello Sunday The Take-Out One Invisible Sun Stick SPF30 with Hyaluronic Acid - 30g full-size, RRP £20 Gruum Solstråler After Sun Face Oil - 30ml full-size, RRP £15 Glowcore Gua Sha - full-size, RRP £10.80 Trinny London Golden Glow Bronzer in the shade Naomi - 4g full-size, RRP £25 KVD Beauty Tattoo Pencil Liner Waterproof Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in the shade Trooper Black - 0.35g mini, RRP £13 Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or Florale - 10ml travel-size, RRP £4.40 Bondi Sands Tropical Rum Body Moisturiser - 200ml full-size, RRP £5.99 Bellapierre Cosmetics All Eyes On You Eyeshadow Palette - four shades full-size, RRP £25 Avant Reconstructing Keratin Complex Ultra Shine Hair Cream - 25ml travel-size, RRP £17 Mudmasky Glow-Up Cleanser - 60ml full-size, RRP £39.99 Balance Me Super Firming Body Oil - 30 ml travel-size, RRP £12 Amphora Aromatics Mint and Dead Sea Salts Deep Cleansing Face Mask - 100ml full-size, RRP £14.40 Plus a voucher to redeem for four copies of OK! Magazine, RRP £18.40 In my opinion it's the perfect mix of essentials to see you through summer (a bug tube of body lotion, a glowy face oil, a handbag-friendly SPF stick) plus suitcase-sized treats (the Nuxe body oil, a hair treatment) and perhaps some new things to try out (for example, the gua sha feels lovely and cooling in hot weather). Like all of these limited-edition boxes with huge savings, however, you haven't got long to shop it, as they typically sell out quickly – so if you want snap up £220 of these top beauty products for less than £50, now's the time to do so. If you're looking for alternative money-saving beauty boxes, either for yourself or to gift to someone else, Lookfantastic has launched its Summer Heroes Edit, containing the likes of Sol de Janeiro and Caudalie and worth over £150 but yours for £45. Meanwhile Cult Beauty's The Set For Sun Edit has a big focus on sun cream, and contains Elemis, Supergoop and The Inkey List; it costs £40 but worth over £175.

La Casa de los Naranjos hotel review: a history-steeped boutique stay in Lanzarote's north

Circled by citrus trees on the fringes of picturesque Haria is this handsome 19th-century manor that's been sensitively brought back to life by owner José Antonio, who stumbled upon the then-neglected building just short of a decade ago. Step inside and you'll find it rich with romance — original timber boards creak underfoot, beamed ceilings are hung with hefty chandeliers, and enormous sash windows encourage near-constant contemplation of the volcanic scenery beyond. What's so special about the place though is that for all the gilt and grandeur, the mood is more home-from-home than hotel; service is warm yet pleasingly uncomplicated, and since the staff clock off around midnight, guests are invited into the house kitchen to rustle up their own gin and tonics after hours. Each one is unique as far as the layout is concerned, though they're all decidedly lofty with headboards crafted out of repurposed wooden panels, antique writing desks and freestanding wardrobes. The bathrooms are equally elegant with walk-in rainfall showers, age-speckled mirrors and greenery planted in white enamel pots. Some of them have clawfoot bath tubs from which you can glimpse the mountaintops glowing in the last of the day's sun, and you can expect full-size products from French skincare label Nuxe. Rooms One and Two are the most impressive — the latter has its own mezzanine complete with twin beds, making it ideal for families — while Room Six leads out onto a sweeping private terrace. Score 7/10The sun-washed central courtyard provides the backdrop for simple yet delicious breakfasts. There's no buffet but the à la carte line-up features just-cut jamon, herby omelettes and toast smothered in marmalade made with the oranges grown outside, and guests are encouraged to try a couple of plates from the menu each morning by attentive staff. Dinner is taken in the high-ceilinged dining room, where a huge grandfather clock towers over candelabra-lit tables. Stand-outs include the blackened Lanzarote octopus with potato and lime, and the delicate island grouper with cauliflower cream. The wine list is heavy on Canarian labels and the chef is happy to adapt most of the dishes on the menu to suit children. • Read our full guide to Lanzarote• Best things to do in Lanzarote Score 7/10Though it's searingly hot throughout the day, the house's vast, view-toting rooftop is a glorious spot to perch once the sun has begun to dip. In the south-facing salon you'll find floral upholstered armchairs for lounging in, and bibliophiles will feel right at home in the small upstairs library, with its shelves of leather-bound tomes and historic maps. There's no pool at present but the team has one in the works, and although there are few dedicated facilities for them, children are very welcome — babysitters can be arranged for parents keen to have an evening to themselves during their stay. Score 9/10On the fringes of Haria: a sleepy whitewashed village in the island's north with narrow streets, a couple of low-key bars and a small artisanal market which takes over the central square every Saturday. The hotel is within strolling distance of the Casa Museo de César Manrique while being remarkably well-placed for other sights, too. The Jameos del Agua caves and the high-perched Mirador del Rio for example are just a 15-minute drive away, plus there are some beautiful white-sand beaches and hiking routes nearby.
