Vanuatu And Papua New Guinea End Campaigns With Low-Key Draw
Press Release – OFC Papua New Guinea had already confirmed their entry to the tournament, virtue of their two earlier wins and with little at stake, the match perhaps understandably lacked the pace and bite seen from both sides up to this point. Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea concluded their qualifying campaign for the OFC U-16 Men's Championship 2025 on match day three in Nuku'alofa with a 0-0 draw. Papua New Guinea had already confirmed their entry to the tournament, virtue of their two earlier wins and with little at stake, the match perhaps understandably lacked the pace and bite seen from both sides up to this point. It was a ninety minutes low of chances, though Papua New Guinea did show plenty of signs of the threat that led them to score a combined 12 goals across their first two matches. Boas Tommy – who has been in fine goal scoring form this week – had the best chance to break the deadlock. Usually so clinical in front of goal however, the forward headed wide when unmarked six yards from goal. Vanuatu may well look back at their time in Nuku'alofa with no shortage of frustration. They performed well here against a strong Papua New Guinea side and had they been able to convert one of their two previous draws in the tournament into three points, it could have been a very different story. Preparations can now begin for Papua New Guinea, as they look ahead to the OFC U-16 Men's Championship, to be held in the Solomon Islands this August. Matthew Witu's side will join Group A, alongside Cook Islands, Fiji and Tahiti.

Papua New Guinea Make Impressive Start To Campaign With Victory Over Tonga
Press Release – Oceania Football Confederation Papua New Guinea picked up a comprehensive 5-2 victory over hosts Tonga to kick off their OFC U-16 Men's Championship 2025 – Qualifying campaign in Nuku'alofa. All five of their goals came in the first half, with both Peter Yagum and Boas Tommy scoring twice, before Tonga rebounded for two consolation goals of their own in the final quarter. Papua New Guinea are hoping to reach the OFC U-16 Men's Championship for the first time since 2018 at this year's qualifying tournament, a seven year absence. And they made a blistering start, Albhan Rani and Pater Yagum scoring to give them a two-goal lead inside the first thirteen minutes. Tonga briefly steadied the ship, and should have scored from two big opportunities close to the half-hour mark. Instead, they were three goals behind in the 30th minute when Tommy nodded home a delivery from Yagum off the right flank. He added his second from the penalty spot seven minutes later, with Yagum completing his double just before the break to give Papua New Guinea a five-goal lead. They struggled to maintain the same intensity through the second half however, as injuries and errors dented their progress. That allowed Tonga to score two late consolations, giving the home fans something to cheer about. Sitaleki Kautai scored their first in the 66th minute, before Sioeli Veatupu added a second goal deep into stoppage-time. All four sides are back in action again on Tuesday, when Papua New Guinea face American Samoa, and hosts Tonga do battle with Vanuatu.
