Dylan Hyland heroics help Offaly blitz New York and book Tailteann Cup quarter-final spot
OFFALY danced into the quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup thanks to a 'Hyland fling' in Tullamore on Saturday with just under half their tally coming from the boot of returning forward Dylan Hyland. The Raheen man didn't start either of the last two games for Offaly thanks to a niggling foot injury. Advertisement 2 Dylan Hyland of Offaly starred in the Tailteann Cup win over New York on Saturday 2 Offaly sailed into the quarter-finals with a comfortable win against The Exiles But he was a step ahead of everyone else on the O'Connor Park pitch, ending the game with exactly the same as the New York team as a whole. 12 months ago, New York came to the midlands and caused Laois plenty of problems in this fixture. Ten minutes in, history looked like it might repeat itself. Playing into a strong breeze, some excellent catches from Kieran Murphy and Eoghan McElligott gave New York a solid foundation of possession and with Offaly shooting four wides in that time, New York led by 0-2 to 0-1. Offaly went on to add 1-15 to the scoreboard before New York raised their third flag of the game. With the life and hope extinguished from New York, Offaly continued their momentum after half- time. Ruairí McNamee came off the bench to score 1-2, Jordan Hayes strode forward to bring his tally to four points and Cathal Flynn pulled the strings, operating as quarterback for the Faithful men. Advertisement Most read in GAA Football New York fell 18 points behind before they finally showed their talent. Jack Robinson, who grew up on the Offaly border club of Clogherinkoe, fired two excellent points and should have had a green flag to go with it. While Bobby O'Regan's sensational thunderbolt of a goal was part of a run of 1-6 unanswered. No-one was taking the limelight from Hyland. He struck two neat points from play and then stroked a free over the bar with the last kick to ensure Offaly will still carry plenty of momentum into either their trip to either Newbridge, Enniskillen or a Limerick venue next weekend. ‘Just give us the choice' – Offaly star Mairead Teehan backs shorts switch ahead of camogie Congress
OFFALY camogie star Mairéad Teehan hopes delegates vote for choice between skorts and shorts at a special congress on May 22. The pressure of player protests has forced 2 PwC GPA Player of the Month for April in camogie, Mairéad Teehan of Offaly, with her award outside the PwC offices in Cork 2 Mairead Teehan of Offaly has weighed in on the shorts vs skorts controversy Saturday's Munster final between And Teehan hopes the player's wishes will be granted to end the saga later this month. read more on gaa She said: 'Look, it has dominated discussions. It's something that needed to be done in terms of players standing up and saying, 'Look, we want a choice here.' And it's great to see that teams have been standing up. 'Even in the background, the GPA have been working on this for quite a while, trying to figure out the logistics of it and what we could do. 'But, yeah, look, it's great to see that we're standing up for ourselves as well. "Like that, it's been an issue for a number of years and when it goes to Congress or something like that, we don't necessarily have that, I suppose, power to actually make those decisions for ourselves. Most read in GAA Hurling 'You're relying on your county boards and your delegates to pass those motions. "So, yeah, it's just something that we felt as a players group that we felt needed to be addressed at this point. It's just great to see everyone coming out in support of us. Dublin and Kilkenny camogie players wear shorts in protest against skorts 'In fairness to the Camogie Association they did call the Special Congress to try and change the rule. 'But it is now up to the delegates to vote and to listen to what players are saying across the country and listen to what we want. 'It's just that thing of, we want a choice. Like, if you want to stay wearing a skort, that's absolutely fine but it's also that we have that choice to wear the shorts as well.' Teehan was voted on to the GPA's National Executive Committee this week. The player's representative body have unanimously passed their own motion to remove the skort as compulsory - and Teehan never liked them. She said: 'No, I never liked them, to be honest. I was never a fan of them. And I just, yeah, just find them uncomfortable in general. 'Just, I suppose, then like that when you're growing up with brothers and you're kind of watching them going, it's like, why do I have to wear these? 'And like that, you train, you play practice matches in shorts. I'd never personally wear the skort in training or in our practice matches. So, yeah, it's just always something I wasn't a fan of, I suppose.' Mairéad Teehan of Offaly is the PwC GPA Camogie Player of the Month for April. PwC are proud sponsors of the Player of the Month awards across camogie, hurling, football and ladies football.

Clinical Bryant helps Offaly past Wicklow for first Tailteann win in six
Tailteann Cup Group 2: OFFALY 2-13 (2-1-11) WICKLOW 0-11 (0-1-6) Neither Offaly nor Wicklow showed anything like the same sharpness and attacking quality today that was on display in their Leinster quarter-final defeats to Meath and Wicklow. However Jack Bryant's finishing and Cathal Flynn's playmaking was enough to ensure that Offaly still brought to an end their run of five-consecutive Tailteann Cup defeats over the past two seasons. The home side won each half by exactly four points, but despite the absence of any meaningful breeze, the two periods of 35 minutes were completely different in every respect. For the opening half, Wicklow were dominant at midfield, with Pádraig O'Toole leading the way in giving Oisín McConville's side plenty of possession. They dominated the first quarter but a Diarmuid Egan goal against the run of play and some excellent defensive work from the Midlanders meant there was just two points in it, 0-5 to 1-0, with 18 minutes played. Shane Tierney then scored Offaly's first point and Mark Jackson replied with a double, but Offaly found their stride in the last 15 minutes, putting themselves right into the driving seat when Bryant bravely took a hard hit from Jackson to flick Cathal Flynn's perfectly-weighted 30-metre pass to the net just before half-time. Kevin Quinn reduced the gap to a single score (2-6 to 0-9) with the first point of the second half but Wicklow's play was riddled with errors for the rest of the game. They kicked six second-half wides, including several scorable frees, while only adding a couple of points to their tally. Without ever hitting the high notes, Offaly gradually moved clear of their opponents. Bryant and Dylan Hyland hit three scores from play each while the introduction of Cillian Bourke and Rúairí McNamee further solidified the home side, who will travel to Walsh Park to take on Waterford next Saturday. For Wicklow, a crucial home tie against Laois will have a huge bearing on the rest of their summer.
