Gurgaon: As cyber fraud runs rampant, city residents have lost as much as Rs 80 crore in just the first four months of 2025. Though cyber cons have kept inventing new methods of cheating people of hard-earned money, the most common frauds that people fall prey to include online investment frauds in shares or stocks through unauthorised sites, mostly operated by China, followed by digital arrest scam, where cons pose as cops or judicial officers. In April alone, people were conned of around Rs 15 crore, including over Rs 5 crore in online investment scams and over Rs 40 lakh in digital arrest frauds. While police registeredmore FIRs this year—560 (of 13,157 complaints) till April, compared to 394 (out of 13,346) last year—the total fraud amount dropped significantly. In the first four months of 2025, losses were Rs 80 crore, down from Rs 157 crore in the same period last year. Notably, residents lost over Rs 350 crores last year to cyber fraudsters, a significant hike from Rs 210 crore in 2023. However, the number of arrests in the first four months this year doubled in comparison with the corresponding time frame last year. Cybercrime police arrested 840 cons till April as compared to 455 accused held from Jan to April last year. T'puram: Police launched an investigation into a fraudulent job advertisement posted on the OLX app, falsely promising high-paying jobs at the Vizhinjam Port. The scam came to light after port company officials filed a complaint on Tuesday, leading to the swift removal of the advertisement and the associated mobile number being switched off. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The advertisement claimed that jobs were available in three shifts of eight hours each, with the possibility of working two shifts a day. It offered a salary range from Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 per shift and invited applications from candidates aged between 20 and 45. Those who contacted the number listed in the ad were allegedly told that a donation of Rs 1 lakh was required, to be paid directly and that it was intended as a "contribution" to labour unions. The scammers further claimed that the recruitment was being handled at a "higher level," dismissing any involvement of local party leaders. However, Vizhinjam Port officials clarified that the advertisement was fake and warned the public not to fall for such scams. Police are investigating the phone number used and checking if anyone fell victim to the fraud.

The Bandepalya police have arrested a man who stole a two-wheeler under the pretext of taking it for a test drive after spotting an ad on accused, identified as Pradeep alias OLX Pradeep (31), a resident of Adarsh Nagar, Arishina Kunte, Nelamangala, approached Ritabina Das, who had listed her two-wheeler for sale on the OLX app. On May 1, around 11 am, he visited her location, expressed interest in purchasing the vehicle, and requested a test ride—only to vanish with the immediately lodged a complaint with Bandepalya police. Based on the FIR, the police launched an investigation and successfully tracked down and arrested Pradeep. A two-wheeler worth Rs 90,000 was recovered from investigation, led by Mahesh Kanakagiri, revealed that Pradeep was a repeat offender. Police found that he had committed similar crimes in the Peenya, Kumba­lagodu, Subram­anyapura, Amruthahalli, and Kothanur police station limits. In all, five two-wheelers were seized.

OLX fraud: Man uses ‘test ride' trick to flee with two-wheelers in Bengaluru, held

Bengaluru: A 31-year-old man, who targeted people selling their two-wheelers on OLX and stole the vehicles during test rides, has landed in police custody. Pradeep, alias OLX Pradeep, was apprehended following an investigation into five such thefts. All stolen scooters have been recovered. On May 5, Ritabina Das, a private firm employee, had complained regarding the theft of her Yamaha Ray ZR scooter. Das had advertised her vehicle on OLX for Rs 90,000 when an unidentified man contacted her, expressing interest. He met Ritabina Das near her residence in Bandepalya on May 1, collected her identification documents including the scooter's registration certificate and Aadhaar card, and requested a test ride. After she agreed, he drove away at 11.45am and didn't return. Police registered a case of theft and cheating. Officers discovered the suspect had arrived at the location using a bike taxi service. By tracking the taxi driver and examining CCTV footage in the area, police identified Pradeep, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Nelamangala. Pradeep has confessed to four similar offences. His method involved searching for advertisements on OLX, contacting sellers, and travelling to meet them on bike taxis to avoid identification. Pradeep sold stolen vehicles in various locations, including Chintamani in Chikkaballapura and Chikkamagaluru, promising buyers he would register the vehicles later. He used the proceeds to repay his loans. He has completed PUC, is married, and lives with his wife and children.
