Ukraine captures Chinese men fighting for Russia, says Zelenskyy
ADVERTISEMENT Two Chinese citizens fighting as part of the Russian army were captured in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday. 'Our military captured two Chinese citizens who fought in the Russian army. This happened on the territory of Ukraine – in the Donetsk region. We have the documents of these prisoners, bank cards and personal data,' Zelenskyy said in a social media post. Zelenskyy shared footage of one of the prisoners and claimed Ukraine had information on additional Chinese citizens fighting within the Russian army. "We have information that there are much more than two such Chinese citizens in the occupier's units," Zelenskyy said. If confirmed, this would mark the presence of a third country with boots on the ground and a fourth country overall fighting on Russia's side in its all-out war against Ukraine. Earlier last year, up to 12,000 North Korean troops were deployed to the Kursk region to support Russian forces. According to Zelenskyy, North Korean units fighting for Russia have suffered around 4,000 casualties, two-thirds of them killed. Meanwhile, Tehran has been providing its support to Moscow, including Shaheed drones, but it has no personnel present in Ukraine at this time. "This is yet another country providing military support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Another one after Iran and North Korean troops," Zelenskyy said. "But there is a difference: the North Koreans were fighting against us on the Kursk front, while the Chinese are fighting on Ukrainian territory. I believe this is an important issue that we need to discuss with our partners." The Ukrainian president told reporters he had ordered officials in Kyiv to get an explanation from Beijing. China has been Russia's key partner since the start of the full-scale invasion. The country has become Moscow's top supplier of dual-use goods used in weapons production. He called on Western allies to react. Urgent UNSC meeting requested Ukraine has initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and a special meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council following Russia's deadly attack on Kryvyi Rih, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said. "Russia's ballistic strike on Kryvyi Rih last week killed nine children, the largest number of Ukrainian kids killed in a single attack since 2022. Russia targeted playgrounds in an ordinary residential area. With a cluster warhead to maximise casualties," Sybiha wrote. The UN Security Council and OSCE meetings "will help to advance peace efforts and accountability" and will take place on Thursday. Meanwhile, Ukrainian media reported on Tuesday that at least three people were killed and 19 injured by Russian attacks across Ukraine. ADVERTISEMENT Regional governor Vadym Filashkin said two people were killed and two more wounded by Russian shelling in Donetsk. Another person was killed in Kharkiv and five more were injured, including a child, according to the area's governor Oleh Syniehubov. Ukraine calls UN Security Council meeting after Russia's strike on Kryvyi Rih
Ukraine has initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and a special meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council following Russia's deadly attack on Kryvyi Rih, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X on April 7. Russia attacked Kryvyi Rih on April 4, killing 20 people and injuring 75. Despite Russia's claims that it was attacking military targets, recently released security footage shows that no military personnel were present. "Russia's ballistic strike on Kryvyi Rih last week killed nine children, the largest number of Ukrainian kids killed in a single attack since 2022. Russia targeted playgrounds in an ordinary residential area. With a cluster warhead to maximize casualties," Sybiha added. The UN Security Council and OSCE meetings "will help to advance peace efforts and accountability" and will take place on April 8. Sybiha also called for "a robust international response to Russian atrocities" and emphasized the need for "both strong condemnation and firm action." Russia's strike comes amidst recent U.S.-led peace talks. Ukraine has already agreed to a U.S.-proposed full 30-day ceasefire, while Russia has refused. In order to end the war, "Russia must cease its terror against Ukrainian children and civilians and respond to the ceasefire proposal," Sybiha concluded. Russia has abducted over 19,000 Ukrainian children, another 1,700 missing
Ukraine is calling on the OSCE to pay attention to the illegal deportation of 19,546 Ukrainian children by Russia and the disappearance of a further 1,700 children who have fallen victim to Russian aggression. Kyiv is demanding greater involvement from international organisations in bringing these children home. Source: Yurii Vitrenko, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Organisations in Vienna, during a regular meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, as reported by Ukrinform Details: Vitrenko emphasised that these actions violate international norms and constitute a deliberate genocidal policy by the Kremlin against the Ukrainian people. "The illegal deportation and forced Russification of Ukrainian children are part of the Kremlin's genocidal policy against the Ukrainian people. Ukraine will never agree to compromises on this issue," he stressed. Vitrenko reported that at least 380 Ukrainian children had been placed under so-called "temporary guardianship" (illegally adopted) in Russia. Only 1,227 children have been successfully brought back, while Russia continues to obstruct this process by all possible means. He highlighted the importance of involving the international community in addressing this issue and urged the OSCE to take more active steps to ensure the children's return and reintegration into Ukraine. Quote: "We consider this a matter of critical importance for future generations. Ukraine expects the OSCE to take an active role in facilitating the return of all deported children, illegally detained civilians and medical workers, in protecting the rights of prisoners of war and in securing the release of Crimean political prisoners." Details: In his speech, Vitrenko also specifically highlighted the systematic torture and other forms of unlawful treatment suffered by Ukrainian civilians and POWs in Russian captivity. "The issue of Russia holding Ukrainian civilians and military personnel in isolation remains critically important, as does the prohibition of access to them for representatives of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross," he stated.
