May 14—Eddy Award winners honored at banquet at OUS A dozen students were honored on Thursday for their academic excellence. The annual Eddy Awards banquet, hosted by the Ironton Child Welfare Club, took place in the Mains Rotunda at Ohio University Southern. Honorees and their families were treated to a spaghetti dinner and desert, prepared by member of the Child Welfare Club, and the students were presented with trophies for their achievement. The nonprofit administers the test each year to the top 25 percent of students in the sixth grade at Ironton Middle School and St. Lawrence School. The dinner is to honor those who earned a Superior score on the test. Christi Bare, guidance counselor for St. Lawrence School in Ironton, said she spoke with past recipients of the Eddy Award and it was, for many, "the first major academic award that they received." She said schools begin preparing for the test each February. "It is a starting point for hard work and striving to be the best student possible," she said. She mentioned that the 2019 recipients of the award are now in this year's graduating classes at the high schools. She said these students are now preparing to pursue college and careers in diverse fields, ranging from medical to business to journalism to science. The students each addressed the gathering in a prerecorded video, made by Dr. David Lucas. Man had already given thought to their plans beyond high school, speaking about interests in careers including astrophysics, occupational therapy, business administration and aerospace engineering. This year's honorees for the Eddy Award were Ellie Webb, Adalyn Hunt, Presley Dean, Lily Dalton, Briella Strickland, Tristan Danielson, Brigham Compliment, Griffin Rowe, Caleb Eaches and Sol Pennington.

New Mammal Species Discovered in the Age of Dinosaurs

INA-sources A recent discovery in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, has unveiled a new mammal species that dates back to the Late Cretaceous period, predating the rise of the dinosaurs by millions of years. The Discovery of Ravjaa ishiii The fossil in question belongs to a previously unknown genus and species of mammal named Ravjaa ishiii. This tiny mammal, no larger than a mouse, was found in the Baynshire Formation during a joint expedition in 2019. The species name honors Dulduityn Danzanravjaa, a respected 19th-century Buddhist monk, and the late Kenichi Ishii, who helped establish the research partnership between Mongolia and OUS. A Tiny Fossil with Big Implications The fossil, a one-centimeter partial lower jaw, has been identified as belonging to the Cretaceous mammal family Zhelestidae. Despite its small size, the fossil displays some remarkable features. Its unusually tall molars and distinctive jaw shape set it apart from other known relatives, leading the study to conclude that it represents a new genus and species. This is the first time a Zhelestid has been recorded in Mongolia. Scientists believed that Zhelestidae primarily thrived along ancient coastlines, but this discovery shows that they also inhabited inland areas during the Late Cretaceous period. Ecological Insights from the Cretaceous Period The age of the Baynshire Formation, where the fossil was found, corresponds with the early spread of angiosperms, or flowering plants. These plants were an essential part of the terrestrial ecosystem during the Late Cretaceous, and their presence may have influenced the diets of early mammals. The robust nature of the molars of Ravjaa ishiii suggests that it likely fed on seeds and fruits. As Tsukasa Okoshi, the lead author and OUS doctoral candidate, remarked, 'Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the publication process took longer than expected, but we were finally able to establish the scientific importance of this specimen.' Optiemus bullish on drone business, begins talks with state governments for services: Ashok Gupta

NEW DELHI: Optiemus Infracom 's drone unit is banking on agriculture and defence verticals to kickstart its commercial business, and has commenced discussions with state governments and agencies, a senior executive said. 'We have done everything locally. Now, we are talking to states and FPOs (farmer producer organisations) to start our drone-as-a-service ,' Ashok Gupta , executive chairman, Optiemus Group, told ETTelecom recently in an interview. 'There is a significant requirement for drones, such as in large agricultural states like Assam. The Central and state governments have started deliberating how to leverage technology like drones to make the life of farmers easier,' Gupta said. The drone industry , however, is at a nascent stage in the country commercially due to the absence of large-scale government-driven deals, lack of talented manpower and drone pilots, and cumbersome approval processes, said an industry executive, asking not to be named. The Centre, on its part, notified Drone Rules in August 2021 in a bid to enhance the ease-of-doing-business (EoDB), which included reducing the number of forms from 72 to 4, abolishing the needs for pilot certificates to operate drone of up to 2kg (non-commercial) and all drones weighing less than 250 grams, among others. The government further notified the Drone (Amendment) Rules on February 11, 2022, to abolish the need for a drone pilot license, stating that a remote pilot certificate issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-authorised drone school shall be adequate for operating drones. Domestic contract electronics and telecom gear maker Optiemus Infracom had set up a drone subsidiary, Optiemus Unmanned Systems (OUS), in 2023 with an initial investment of ₹25 crore. The Ghaziabad-headquartered firm previously said it aims to invest around ₹140 crore in a drone-as-a-service model under its drone-making subsidiary, targeting a revenue of ₹600-900 crore by the end of calendar 2025. Gupta said that successful proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations will be the first step towards achieving maturity in the country's nascent drone industry. 'So we are focusing on agriculture, defense, and all verticals,' he added. 'Our revenue (guidance) is still under pipeline.' News agency PTI separately reported that Optiemus Infracom has achieved over 75% indigenisation of components in its devices, and has invested around ₹40 crore in its drone business. OUS has launched the Marak VT100, Vajra QC55, Canister Launched Loitering Munition, and First Person View (FPV) drones with optical fiber cable-based navigation capability for defense, surveillance, and reconnaissance applications. The company has also partnered with Taiwanese Avix Technology to jointly develop, manufacture, and assemble high-performance camera systems, gimbals, and related drone components in India to meet the specific needs of the Indian defense and related sectors.
