Young duo sign new deals with United

OXFORD United duo James Golding and Josh Johnson have both signed new deals with the club. The 20-year-old players have featured 16 times between them for the U's, although neither have made an appearance for the club since January 2024. Golding spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan in the Vanarama National League with both Maidenhead United and Southend United, and across the two loan spells, he scored five goals in 23 appearances. Johnson featured in two separate loan spells for Maidenhead this season, and played in 22 National League matches. United have reported that the two players will 'remain with the club ahead of the 2025/26 season'. U's head of football operations Ed Waldron told the club website: 'It's really important for the club to have a strong core of young, promising players who have been developed within our system. 'Josh and James are two players who have shown real qualities over each age group and have since enjoyed strong loan spells at first team level across the pyramid. 'We look forward to continuing to work with both as they aim to make an impact on our men's first team group.' Rowett previously said: 'We've got quite a big squad, and I think something we need to do next year is maybe create more of an opportunity for some of the younger players to come through from the academy and some of the younger players that have been on loan. 'There'll be an opportunity for some of those to stake their place, and then maybe we can streamline and create a little bit more value from the places that are currently left. 'I would always work off an ideal number. That ideal number would always have probably four young players within that, so if you do get a spate of maybe six or seven injuries, a couple of those young players can come in and be part of the matchday squad because they're training with you all the time. 'That's preferable to me to do that rather than two senior players. You've seen it this season. We've had two or three senior players sat out of the matchday squad for most of the time.'

Loanees who have impressed away from U's will be given chance in pre-season

OXFORD United players who have impressed while on loan away from the club will be given the chance to stake a place in the team during pre-season. Eight members of the U's first team have been out on loan during the 2024/25 campaign, with some of those enjoying particularly strong seasons. Left back Jack Currie is arguably the standout name, having played 44 times across all competitions for Leyton Orient, helping the O's reach Sunday's Sky Bet League One play-off final against Charlton Athletic. In the second half of the season, Louie Sibley (Rotherham United) and both Owen Dale and Will Goodwin (Wigan Athletic) also played in League One, while Gatlin O'Donkor spent the majority of the campaign at Bristol Rovers. Stephan Negru impressed in Salford City's play-off push in League Two, while James Golding and Josh Johnson both got experience in the Vanarama National League. READ ALSO: How real is second season syndrome in the Championship? United head coach Gary Rowett said: 'We've had some young players that have had some very good loans – O'Donkor, Negru, Golding, Currie, Sibs has gone out in the second half of the season – so different players, and there'll be a few more amongst that as well. 'Particularly for the younger ones, they'll come back and get pre-season with us for at least the first two or three weeks, and we'll see where they're at and where we think they're at. 'We've got some good players. We've got some players that have performed well in League One and beyond, and it's only right that you let them go out on loan because you want to bring them back and see how their development has gone in that period of time. 'There'll be some of the other players that have maybe gone out on loan that might be saying now 'I need to play every week because I've had that taste of it' and of course we'll try to find that opportunity for them, but it would be wrong for me to name different individuals and what their plan will be. 'Just as a general rule, if someone has done well out on loan, they'll come back and be part of our pre-season plans.'

Round-up: Mixed success for U's players on international duty

OXFORD United's five players on international duty have completed their fixtures for the March window with mixed success. Ole Romeny no doubt enjoyed the international break the most, scoring two goals in his first two games for Indonesia. After netting on his international debut on Thursday as Indonesia were beaten 5-1 by Australia in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, he then backed that up with a match-winning strike at home to Bahrain. With 24 minutes on the clock, Romeny received a low pass from U's teammate Marselino Ferdinan and produced a first-time right-footed finish from the centre of the penalty box. It proved to be the only goal of the game as Indonesia moved to within a point of third-placed Saudi Arabia in the six-team qualifying group. READ ALSO: Club record buys among those to have played for U's and Boro Ciaron Brown played the full 90 minutes across Northern Ireland's two international friendlies. Friday saw Brown play the full 90 minutes at centre half as Northern Ireland held Switzerland to a 1-1 draw at Windsor Park. A free kick from West Bromwich Albion midfielder Isaac Price gave the hosts the lead after 16 minutes, however Toulouse midfielder Vincent Sierro found a leveller a dozen minutes later. A 5-1 defeat away against Sweden followed in another friendly, with the hosts 2-0 in front at half-time. Three more goals were added after the break via former Watford wide player Ken Sema, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak and Nottingham Forest attacker Anthony Elanga, before Price managed a late consolation with a minute left on the clock. Wales were 2-1 in front courtesy of goals from Daniel James and Ben Davies when United striker Mark Harris replaced Brennan Johnson after 62 minutes. Rabbi Matondo, who plays for Hannover on loan from Rangers, added the third Wales goal in the 90th minute. Harris was then an unused substitute for the thrilling 1-1 draw in North Macedonia. The hosts took the lead a minute into second half stoppage time through Girona striker Bojan Miovski, however Wales hit back five minutes later via AFC Bournemouth attacker David Brooks. Ben Nelson was an unused substitute on Monday as England's Elite League squad (formerly the Under-20s) drew 2-2 against Switzerland. Former U's loanee Dane Scarlett, who has one goal in five appearances for Tottenham Hotspur since his recall in January, played half an hour from the bench for England. Nelson previously played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw away to Portugal, a game in which Scarlett gave England the lead after seven minutes, but Portugal hit back through Leeds United youngster Diogo Monteiro just after half an hour had been played.
