Bull run: Top jockey primed for big day at Wyong

Top jockey Aaron Bullock looks to have a number of leading chances going around at Wyong on Sunday. The leading rider will kick off the day with Oakfield Zena contesting the Central Coast 4x 4 Wreckers 4YO&Up Maiden Plate, while Harlex (Colorado Homes Midway Class 1 Handicap) is also going around. Trainer Damien Lane prepares a lot of the Oakfield gallopers, and he is adamant she can make an impact. 'Oakfield Zena was down the track at her latest star, and she ran well leading into that,' said Lane. 'She's a mare with talent and there's no reason she can't go on with the job.' Bullock will partner the Paul Perry prepared Harlex in the Colorado Homes Class 1 Handicap (1000m). 'He's a horse with his share of ability. He ran well at Scone when resuming from a spell and there's no reason he can't run up to that again,' said Bullock. 'Tigers Roar will also go around in race seven for Greg Hickman, and he should make an impact as well.' The training partnership of wife and husband Annabel and Rob Archibald will have Expeditiously in the Ezy Projects – Building Made Easy Maiden Handicap (1100m) with Mollie Fitzgerald taking the ride, while November Air is set to run in The Entrance Leagues Class 1 Handicap (1600m) with Braith Nock in the saddle. Pariah Engagement (Fitzgerald) and Celestial Breeze (Jean Van Overmeire) will take part in the Teamwork Trophies F&M Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m), with Annabel and Rob sharing the training.

Jersey martial arts club says new venue not fit for purpose

The owner of a Jersey martial arts club says she might have to stop offering self-defence lessons when she leaves Fort sports clubs are due to leave the fort by the end of 2025, with many being offered a place at Oakfield's new £8.4m facility.Róisín Pitman runs defence classes for women and teaches Aikido - a type of martial arts. She said she had been offered a new base at the centre but it was "unsuitable and not fit for purpose". However, the government said: "We are confident it will meet the needs of the martial arts community, provided there is a collective willingness to work together and share space, as many clubs have done previously." 'We're in limbo' Ms Pitman: "We won't have a room under our control, we will have a room where we are training with five other clubs with limited time and space."The room will have to remain sterile in so much as we cannot decorate or put up things because other clubs are using it."Ms Pitman said it also would not be able to build its kamiza shrine, which would be like "a church with no alter".The former police officer has been teaching at Fort Regent for 45 said: "We're all volunteers, we don't do this for money... we're in limbo to the point where we haven't got a clue what's going to happen. "We could go out of business, that's the truth of it." Andrew Scate, chief officer for Infrastructure and Environment, said the department had been in "ongoing discussions with martial arts clubs for several years" as part of the said: "We are investing in a new, purpose-built facility at Oakfield designed specifically for martial arts, gymnastics and other indoor sports."We are confident it will meet the needs of the martial arts community, provided there is a collective willingness to work together and share space, as many clubs have done previously."Infrastructure also said it was working to address scheduling concerns and that a joint meeting with all martial arts clubs was planned for later this Scate added that clubs were free to explore private rental options if they felt Oakfield was not for them.

Isle of Wight primary school closures decision delayed

A decision on the fate of five Isle of Wight primary schools has been delayed. Councillors agreed last night to defer the vote on whether to close Oakfield in Ryde, Brading, Cowes, Wroxhall and Arreton primary they reassured parents the council would still be able to meet a deadline of mid April to assess and decide applications for September 2025 school of Wight Council officers have argued school closures are necessary to improve education standards and make schools financially sustainable. A statutory four-week consultation for people to have their say on the proposals ran until February corporate scrutiny meeting of councillors on Tuesday said it had not had enough time to read and digest a 1,700 page report given to them three days before their cross-party body said 'any effective and meaningful scrutiny' of the cabinet's expected decision to close 5 primary schools would be 'open to ridicule'.Accepting the recommendation to delay, cabinet member for education, councillor Jonathan Bacon said he regretted "any anxiety" that the delay would cause to school communities added staff would now have two weeks to finalise school place allocation before national offer day for primary education on Wednesday April 16th. The vote will now take place on Thursday 20th March after a corporate scrutiny meeting on Tuesday 18th March. You can follow BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.

New homes could be built on derelict land

A multi-million pound development has been earmarked for a derelict portion of land in Wiltshire. Swindon Borough Council plans to build 10 flats and six three-bedroom houses on the corner of the former Oakfield campus in Marlowe Avenue. If approved, the £4.4m development will see 16 zero carbon accessible homes built adjacent to Nationwide's 239-home community housing development. To allow the development to go ahead, the former Oakfield Project community building, which has been empty since 2020, will now be demolished. The site, which the developer says will include space for trees and landscaping, will include a large area of public open space, electric vehicle charging points, car parking and bike storage. Renewable energy systems such as air source heat pumps, solar panels and rainwater harvesting also form part of the plans, which will be formally submitted later this year. The new development is the latest investment in the local area, following confirmation last month that more than £300,000 will be spent on local sports facilities. Councillor Emma Bushell, deputy leader of Swindon Borough Council and cabinet member for organisational oversight, said: "The regeneration of the Oakfield Project building and surrounding land has been in the pipeline for some time. "My fellow ward councillors and I realise some members of the local community will be sad to see the demolition of the community building, but we hope that delivering much-needed accessible housing on the empty site will be welcomed by local residents."
