Talking on The TV Podcast, Peter said: 'You've got Coronation Street being made in Manchester, Emmerdale in Leeds. 'Big savings' 'Could you imagine, rather like the daytime consolidation, that ITV will decide to have them both made in the same place under one umbrella? Big savings. Doorbell Detectives and Scam Interceptors review: These Big Brother-style shows turn daytime TV into long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of terror
You can tell its summer as, despite the downturn in the weather leaving us less likely to head outside, the main terrestrial broadcasters don't seem to have anything new for our viewing pleasure. Which is how I ended up watching Doorbell Detectives (BBC1, Mon, 8.30pm), which inexplicably was given a prime-time slot this week before retreating to a more usual daytime airing in a terrifyingly Big Brother-style anti-crime double bill with Scam Interceptors (BBC1, weekdays, 2.30pm). Watchdog's Matt Allwright – who has carved himself a niche in these low-budget infotainment shows – hosts Doorbell Detectives, standing uneasily in the middle of a set which is part hay-barn and part GP's waiting room. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad What little budget the show has is taken up by a floating screen in the middle of the barn, on which Matt can show us grainy footage from doorbell cameras up and down the country. Matt Allwright in the Doorbell Detectives studio, a 'cross between a hay barn and a GP's waiting room' (Picture: BBC/Objective Media Group t/a Purple Productions) Apparently, one-in-five homes comes equipped with these mini CCTV rigs, constantly texting alerts to phones across suburbia, alerting home owners to the delivery man chucking a parcel on the doorstep, next door's cat relieving itself on the azaleas, or little Tommy from No.35 belting down the pavement on his e-scooter. Matt and his doorbell detectives seem to the think this is a good thing, and brings in Anton, a former police officer with 30 years' experience, to help one Manchester resident previously left severely under-surveilled to fit a camera to her own home. Anton, who seems to think he is testifying in the witness box rather than offering advice on a semi-serious daytime TV show, offers essential advice such as 'make sure the battery is charged', while brushing off concerns about the invasion of everyone's privacy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Some people can get a bit funny about catching what's going in neighbouring properties,' he says, as if the wish to maintain some sort of privacy is the main indicator of a serial killer. Doorbell Detectives features footage taken from doorbell cameras of would-be criminals attempting thefts and burglaries (Picture: BBC/Objective Media Group t/a Purple Productions) Meanwhile, back in the studio, Matt chats to people who caught would-be burglars in the all-seeing eye of their doorbell camera, and finds out what they did next. Mainly, it seems, telling everyone else in the neighbourhood WhatsApp group, so they could check their doorbell cameras as well. That's because 'confronting thieves is dangerous', Matt tells us, before then proving it by talking to homeowner Alison, whose husband was badly beaten up by a fleeing criminal. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Understandably, Alison doesn't want to be identified, so Matt ends up talking to a floating phone lock-screen in the middle Doorbell Detectives' luxo-barn. It all gets very tense in the Scam Interceptors HQ. The team are Harleen Nottay, Mark Lewis, Aaron Ng, and Nick Stapleton (Picture: BBC Studios) It's all very low-rent, and frankly very dull, unlike its partner Scam Interceptors, which is Mission: Impossible compared to Doorbell Detectives' Hettie Wainthropp Investigates. Rav Wilding sits in 'Interceptor HQ' in Glasgow, accompanied by a team of black-clad investigators, staring at a bank of screens – all with headsets and flashing lights. Apparently, they have employed the services of an 'ethical hacker' to get into the computer systems of those scam callers who regularly call to warn you that someone has spend thousands of your hard-earned pounds online. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad They can listen into the scammers calling an unsuspecting pensioner and – hopefully – warn them they are being scammed. Unfortunately, you wonder how they don't get caught in that Spider-Man meme, the one where several Spider-Men are all pointing at each other, each caller claiming the other is the scammer. Rav is incredibly enthusiastic, the music is pounding and urgent, and the sense of tension is palpable. Both these shows leave you with the uncomfortable feeling of being observed anonymously, distantly by unknown powers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But beyond that, the effect they have must be the opposite of the one required. Far from imparting information that might help keep you safe, far from being an effective crime-busting tool, and very far from giving you a reassuring notion that these criminals are being deterred, these shows can only serve to frighten the viewers at home. Given these are daytime shows, many of those viewers will be the very frail, vulnerable or elderly people they profess to want to protect. And leaving them in a state of fear, unwilling to go out, to engage with the world, to enjoy a full life. Only stuck inside watching TV. Which, as we know, is a problem. Because its summer, and there's nothing on.

What we know as Gino D'Acampo accused of sexually inappropriate comments
Celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo faces accusations of inappropriate behaviour over a 12-year period which he denies. The Italian-born TV presenter, 48, is a regularly a chef on This Morning and most recently starred in reality series Gino & Fred: Emission Impossible. ITV News have reported "dozens of people" claim the cook's behaviour has been "unacceptable," "distressing" and "horrendous". The TV presenter — who is married to Jessica and they have three children Luciano, Rocco and Mia — has denied the allegations, saying: "I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of. I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting." D'Acampo started out in the showbiz industry on ITV cookery competition Too Many Cooks in the early 2000s. His stint on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here in 2009 propelled him to new heights of fame. Since then, he has worked alongside fellow chefs Fred Sirieix and Gordon Ramsay for a travel and food series Gordon, Gino and Fred: Roadtrip — although Ramsay missed out on the latest one. D'Acampo has been accused of using sexualised and aggressive language on TV sets. Among the claims, one woman has alleged to ITV that D'Acampo made sexual comments to her in a "power play" when they were at a magazine shoot back in 2011. His legal team responded to ITV to say: "This allegation from almost 15 years ago has never, until now via a media request for comment, been raised or put to Mr D'Acampo. He does not recall it, nor accept that this happened. Mr D'Acampo is horrified to be accused of "power play" and an "aggressive act". He emphatically and unequivocally denies these allegations." Two women accused the celebrity chef of making sexual comments on the set of Gordon, Gino And Fred's Road Trip in 2018. ITV News reported it had seen an email detailing concerns about D'Acampo's behaviour raised with the production company Objective Media Group executives — which co-produced Gordon, Gino and Fred's Road Trip in 2018. Objective Media Group responded to say it "takes the welfare and wellbeing of all its production staff and teams incredibly seriously". D'Acampo has denied the claims of inappropriate behaviour that have emerged as part of the ITV investigation. His legal team responded to the claims with ITV saying: "I have been told by ITN news that allegations have been made about me acting inappropriately, some dating back over ten years ago. "I have never been made aware of these matters previously and the allegations are firmly denied. I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone. This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me. "Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately." Studio Ramsay told ITV: "Whilst we do not disclose or discuss personnel matters publicly, Studio Ramsay is committed, in conjunction with our broadcast partners, to a safe and professional work environment. We take all allegations of inappropriate behaviour and workplace misconduct seriously, promptly investigate, and take appropriate remedial action when warranted." MultiStory Media, which produced Gino's Italian Express, told ITV: "It would be inappropriate to go into the detail of individual concerns but we give our assurance that we are reviewing the concerns which have been raised, what was known at the time and what action was taken. We will also look at any new concerns that have come to light." Multistory Media told the PA news agency it has not worked with D'Acampo for six years. Yahoo has reached out to Gino D'Acampo and This Morning's representatives.

Gino D'Acampo denies inappropriate behaviour towards women on sets
Television chef Gino D'Acampo has denied a string of claims he made sexualised comments and gestures to female employees behind the scenes of his popular programmes. ITV News reports dozens of former staff and freelances have detailed alleged experiences they described as 'unacceptable', 'distressing' and 'horrendous' while working with him over a period of more than 12 years. One woman claimed that in 2019 she saw the celebrity chef – a regular on ITV show This Morning – appearing to threaten a colleague over an ice cream. 'I was present when Gino said to the runner, 'If you don't get me a Cornetto I will f*** your girlfriend',' she said. 'I felt appalled, disgusted, embarrassed and very angry.' Another female crew member told ITV News he was 'using his power to bully and intimidate us. For what? A cookery programme'. Mr D'Acampo's cookery programmes include There's No Taste Like Home, Let's Do Lunch, and Gino's Italian Escape. His legal team said he was mortified to be accused of saying inappropriate words to a junior member of staff on Gino's Italian Express. 'He does not recall this incident at all, and the words alleged are absolutely not ones that he would say,' they said. Another woman claimed that on a magazine shoot in 2011, D'Acampo told her in front of the crew that he wanted to turn her over and 'f*** me up the a***'. She said: 'I definitely saw it as some kind of power play. The very act of what he said was aggressive.' She added: 'I felt like Gino, in that moment, was very entitled and he felt very safe.' Mr D'Acampo's legal team told ITV News he did not recall the incident, nor accepted that it happened. 'Mr D'Acampo is horrified to be accused of 'power play' and an 'aggressive act'. He emphatically and unequivocally denies these allegations.' A third woman said that when she went to brief Mr D'Acampo on a location shoot, 'he opened the door in his boxer shorts, nothing else'. She added that he 'jumped on the bed and was sort of - leg up. 'We had to sort of sit there facing him and he made, you know, reference to his d***.' She said she felt disgusted, adding: 'I see it all as quite aggressive, really.' She said it made her consider leaving her job because she didn't want to be near him. Mr D'Acampo's legal team said: 'Mr D'Acampo categorically denies these allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour. 'To his knowledge no such allegations have been made against him in relation to his time on Gino's Italian Express and this is the first time, six years later, he has been informed of these alleged incidents, and he does not accept them, not least because some of this is considered by Mr D'Acampo to be a fabricated work of fiction.' Other claims relate to comments allegedly made while filming Gordon, Gino and Fred's Road Trip. ITV News reports that it has seen evidence concerns were raised with production company Objective Media Group over sexualised comments, and an email was sent in December last year. The response from Objective Media said D'Acampo was 'spoken to about the differences between on screen character material and behaviour off screen with members of the team'. Objective Media Group said it took the welfare and wellbeing of production staff 'incredibly seriously' and had 'behavioural clauses in talent contracts'. Responding to all the claims, Mr D'Acampo said: 'I have never been made aware of these matters previously and the allegations are firmly denied. I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone. This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me. 'Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately. 'I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting.' A spokesperson from ITV, which airs the celebrity chef's shows, said in a statement to ITV News that it is 'production companies who have the primary responsibility for the duty of care of everyone they work with, both on and off screen, when making shows.' They went on to say that all of the concerns and complaints in this investigation 'describe behaviour which is inappropriate and unacceptable. Most of them were not reported to ITV at the time. Where issues have been raised with ITV action has been taken.'
