New grocery store to make fresh produce more accessible to food insecure Las Vegas families
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Getting a nutritious meal is not an option for one in five children who live in the Las Vegas valley but a new grocery store will try to make a dent by offering fresh produce in Las Vegas' Historic Westside.
The Obodo Greengrocer store will open on Saturday, Feb. 22. and will offer fresh vegetables and fruits along with some other essential goods to help families who struggle to eat more healthy food because of high prices and inaccessibility.
According to the Southern Nevada Health District, the rate of food insecurity continues to rise and single-parent households led by women are disproportionately affected, as are Black and Latino families. In 2022, it was estimated more than 330,000 people in Clark County — nearly 15% of the population — were food insecure. The Obodo Greengrocer will accept SNAP benefits.
The store is part of the Obodo Collective, a Black woman-led nonprofit organization that works to address multi-generational poverty through community-driven solutions and partnerships with other nonprofits. On the same property of the store, there is already an urban farm.
The new store will hold a grand opening on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. It's located at 1300 C Street.
