Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants

Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There may be no bigger 'what if' in New York Giants history than the trade of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a first- and third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, along with safety Jabrill Peppers, Beckham's departure broke the hearts of a fanbase. He was the team's best player and an elite offensive weapon. He was a cultural icon and, seemingly, made for the market he dominated. Advertisement And then he was shipped to Cleveland by (then) general manager Dave Gettleman for reasons that fans would still challenge. In the years since the trade, it has grown increasingly difficult to say New York came out on the losing end. With that first-round pick, Gettleman drafted defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who's now one of the top defensive players in the sport. Beckham, meanwhile, has posted just one 1,000-yard season since leaving New York. He hasn't come particularly close since doing so in 2019. Even so, the feeling that things could have been different in East Rutherford has lingered well past Gettleman's tenure. On 'Beckham and Friends Live,' the receiver shared an emotional confession about the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," Beckham said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. Advertisement "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Maybe Beckham would have done enough to elevate Daniel Jones, who the team drafted at No. 6, just 11 picks before Lawrence. Perhaps he would have been more productive without the chemistry- and scheme-based issues that plagued his Browns tenure. The fact that the New York faithful didn't get to see it will continue to haunt the organization. Beckham, having won with the Rams, fell short with the Baltimore Ravens, and was forgotten with the Miami Dolphins. His career may very well be over. The Giants will hope history doesn't repeat itself with the LSU standout following in his footsteps. Odell Beckham Jr laments Giants trade: 'I never, ever wanted to leave'

Odell Beckham Jr. was a sensational player for the New York Giants and was on a path to becoming an all-time great statistically before injuries hindered the journey. Beckham did create controversy when he was with the Giants. He simulated urinating in the end zone against the Philadelphia Eagles, had a meltdown with the kicking net on the sidelines of a game and got into a bitter war with then-Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman. The Giants traded Beckham to the Cleveland Browns before the 2019 season. He later won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams and spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. He appeared on CBS Sports' coverage of the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday and made clear he didn't want to leave the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," he said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was p----- because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Beckham had 390 catches for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns in five seasons with the Giants. He was a Pro Bowler in three of those five years and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014 despite only playing 12 games. Jerry Rice had 346 catches for 6,364 yards and 66 touchdowns in his first five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He was an All-Pro in four of those five seasons and only missed four games in the 1987 season. Beckham's future is unclear. He parted ways with the Dolphins in the offseason. Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers not practicing with a toe injury that is 'nothing serious'

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers is not participating in practice while dealing with a toe injury. Coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday the team is simply being cautious with Nabers, who Daboll said has had an issue with the toe since his college days at LSU. 'Malik will be out here today, but he won't be participating,' Daboll said before the Giants' second practice of organized team activities and first open to reporters. 'We're being mindful of his toe that he's had. Nothing serious, but we're being smart with him in terms of the rehab part of it. So that's where we're at.' Daboll didn't detail the nature of the injury, but said Nabers didn't need any procedures on his toe during the offseason. 'They have a plan,' Daboll said. 'Our doctors, our trainers, if you will, have a plan to kind of move him along and he's been doing a good job with that.' Nabers was the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft last year after setting LSU's career record for yards receiving with 3,003 in three seasons. He followed that by catching an NFL rookie-record 109 passes for New York last season, setting the franchise mark for most receptions in a season. Nabers also tied former Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. for the NFL record for fewest games needed for 100 career catches, reaching the milestone in just 14 contests. He was able to accomplish that despite having an unsettled quarterback situation last season with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito all starting games. Russell Wilson, signed to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, is expected to be the starter this upcoming season. DeVito returns, but New York also signed veteran Jameis Winston and drafted former Mississippi star Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick. All four quarterbacks took snaps at practice, with mostly Wilson working with the starters. He threw a touchdown pass to Darius Slayton in 11-on-11 drills. Dart also took three snaps with the starters. It's uncertain when Nabers will get on the field to participate in practice with his new quarterbacks, but Daboll was not concerned. 'He's had it for a while, back in college, too,' the coach said. 'So just trying to be smart.' Daboll said the Giants have 'good attendance' for OTAs, but said a few unnamed players had a stomach virus and were sitting out Wednesday. Left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) is rehabilitating his injury, as is safety Anthony Johnson (shoulder). 'It's May, so it's important that they progress so we can get them ready for training camp here,' Daboll said. 'And if they're ready to go later on in this process, then they'll do what they can do.' ___ AP NFL:
