OMFED milk to be costlier by Rs 2 from June 13

BHUBANESWAR: Prices of the state-run Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (OMFED) milk of all variants are set to be costlier by Rs 2 per litre from June 13 with the state government effecting a retail hike of Rs 4 per litre. The state government will, though, bear 50 per cent of the additional cost through subvention to reduce the burden on the people. The major chunk of the hike will also be passed on to the dairy farmers, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said here on Sunday. The milk price was last increased by OMFED on April 1, 2023. After the latest increase, a packet of 500 ml toned milk will now cost Rs 24, premium or gold milk Rs 27 and chai special milk Rs 26. Making the announcement during celebration of World Milk Day-2025, Majhi said price of milk supplied by dairy farmers affiliated to OMFED, the apex-level dairy cooperative society, will be increased by Rs 3 per litre. The milk producers, who have been demanding better support price from the government, will now get Rs 38.05 per litre against the current price of Rs 35.05. The revised milk procurement price will benefit around 2.5 lakh dairy farmers in the state, he said.

Retail milk price to rise by Rs 2 per litre as govt hikes procurement cost

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha govt on Sunday announced a Rs 3 per litre hike in milk procurement price, a move that will directly benefit around 2.5 lakh dairy farmers across the state. With this, the procurement price offered by the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (OMFED) increased from Rs 35 to Rs 38 per litre. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chief minister Mohan Majhi also announced Rs 1 lakh as accident death assistance to OMFED farmers during the state-level World Milk Day celebrations here on Sunday. In addition to increasing procurement prices, the state govt raised the retail price of milk from Rs 52 to Rs 54 per litre, which will be implemented from June 13. "From today, the state govt will provide an additional Rs 3 per litre to OMFED milk producers and Re 1 to farmers' organisations. Out of the Rs 4 per litre increased expense, the govt will bear Rs 2 and consumers will pay Rs 2 per litre. This step ensures direct financial benefit to farmers while protecting consumers from the full brunt of the price rise," Majhi said. The milk procurement was last increased by Rs 3 per litre on April 1, 2023. "OMFED is a farmer-centric organisation committed to promoting a circular economy by enhancing farmers' income and ensuring sustainable dairy practices," Vijay Amruta Kulange, the managing director of OMFED, said. The Odisha Milk Farmers' Association welcomed the state govt's decision, calling it a timely and farmer-friendly move that will help stabilise rural incomes. "When the private dairy producers were paying a higher price to farmers, OMFED's low prices diverted many farmers. The move was timely to save OMFED. However, several reforms are required to make it profit-making," Rabi Behera, president of the association, said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state govt has set an ambitious target to double milk production in the next five years from the current 26.4 lakh metric tonnes recorded in 2023-24. "We aim to make Odisha a model state in dairy farming, ensuring both nutrition for our people and prosperity for our farmers," Majhi said. Highlighting ongoing efforts under the 'Chief Minister Kamadhenu Scheme', Majhi mentioned that 3 lakh beneficiaries already received Rs 71 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year for cattle and buffalo rearing, calf care, livestock insurance and fodder cultivation. The scheme offers up to 70% financial assistance to eligible dairy farmers. On the occasion, Majhi disbursed Rs 10.5 crore to 77 registered cow shelters under the 'Chief Minister Animal Welfare Scheme' to support the care of nearly 22,000 stray cattle. Deputy CM Pravati Parida said dairy initiatives are helping make rural women self-reliant with many Mission Shakti members becoming Lakhpati Didis through compost and dairy enterprises. Fisheries and animal resources development minister Gokulananda Mallik called the Kamadhenu scheme a "revolutionary intervention" and reiterated the govt's commitment to strengthening the rural economy through dairy development.
