Tyler Water Utilities to begin testing water for taste, odor study

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Tyler Water Utilities will test different methods that will help remove a compound in water that makes it have a distinct taste and smell. Geosmin is a problematic taste and odor compound found in water sources. TWU has plans to filter the water and will have several methods for removing the geosmin using an enclosure that provides house filter columns. Tyler Water Utilities upgrading Lake Palestine water treatment plant TWU's Taste and Odor Study is in the second phase of testing. This phase includes executing the testing plan, analyzing test results and developing recommendations for removing taste and odor compounds. It will also help find potential improvements to the overall water treatment process. Lake Tyler, Lake Tyler East and Lake Palestine provide the city its drinking water. TWU has two water treatment plants, the Golden Road Water Treatment Plant and the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Lake Palestine Water plant gets its water from Lake Palestine and has high levels of geosmin which is caused by the age of the lake and the natural organic matter found in its' body. Ninety five percent of the geosmin can be removed by the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Geosmin is treated year round even though the water is safe to drink and meets federal and state water quality standards. Courtesy of City of Tyler 'We're working to identify better treatment solutions now for future plant expansions and ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality water for Tyler residents,' Utilities Director Kate Dietz said. Testing is set to be completed and documented into a final report by Spring 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
