Walnut Street bridge to close for construction next week
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Walnut Street bridge over Jordan Creek will close for a week starting Monday, March 3, as the City of Springfield works to replace it.
The city says the aging bridge, which is located just east of Kansas Expressway, will close for one week to allow for preliminary work before being reopened temporarily. A full closure will come in early April and will continue until construction is complete, which is anticipated in the fall.

The project was prompted by MoDOT condition inspections, the city says, and will improve safety, traffic flow, and creek flood capacity. Construction will replace the aging structure and includes a multi-use path on and under the bridge, expanding the city's trail network and paving the way for future connections.
Detours will take drivers around the work zone using College Street, Grant Avenue and Mt. Vernon Street.
The bridge project is expected to cost $3.2 million and is 80% funded through Off-System Bridge program funding. The local match for the project comes from the 1/4-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax.
