The NFL will unveil a new end-of-year award for the 2025 season: the Protector of the Year. NFL executive Troy Vincent says that this award will recognize the best offensive lineman each year. Vincent also gave credit to Bills' offensive lineman Dion Dawkins and Andrew Whitworth for pushing the idea. According to Brooke Pryor, the winner will be decided by a panel that features a number of former offensive linemen greats. The major awards that are handed out currently at the NFL Honors include MVP, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, along with Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year. However, none of those awards are ever going to be ones that offensive linemen would win. Although frequently overlooked, strong offensive line play is where consistent success for any offense begins. Providing a strong running game to lean on keeps the offense out of predictable passing situations, while time in the pocket for a quarterback is a must. The Jaguars have heavily reshaped their offensive line unit this offseason. This includes GM James Gladstone making six outside free agent signings, along with making two more additions in the NFL draft. Since Liam Coen took over as the head coach, he's made it clear that the offensive line play for the Jaguars has to improve this season. Gladstone has now constructed a unit where Jacksonville has options and can really lean into creating competition this summer to hopefully help elevate the overall level of play.

As it pertains to the Colts, while we have to see how the 2025 season plays out when it comes to the Protector of the Year award, Quenton Nelson has steadily been one of the better guards in the NFL for several years, while Bernhard Raimann is emerging as one of the better tackles.

Josh Allen headlines NFL awards, beating Lamar Jackson for MVP

There was a bit of an upset at the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday night where the league announced its player awards and the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class was announced. After Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson earned the nod on the All-Pro first team, it looked like he would likely win the third Most Valuable Player award of his career. That didn't happen. The winner was announced and it was Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. He edged out Jackson in voting, earning 383 points to Jackson's 362 as Allen won 27 of the 50 first-place votes in addition to 22 second-place votes and one third-place nod, while Jackson had 23 first-place votes, 26 second-place votes and one fourth-place vote. It was Allen's first career MVP. The other notable player and coach awards were announced for Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Likewise, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year was announced. Below are the winners of the big awards.
