'I Can't Watch Certain Scenes' Elisabeth Moss Says Being A Parent Changed Her View Of 'The Handmaid's Tale'

For the past eight years, Elisabeth Moss has fronted The Handmaid's Tale as the titular handmaid, June Osbourne (Offred). 66 episodes later, the longstanding dystopian drama came to an end when the season six finale debuted on May 27, for US audiences (UK viewers will have to wait a while longer to reach the final episode). FIND OUT MORE AT ELLE COLLECTIVE Now Moss is finally parting ways with a character that she has spent the majority of her thirties playing - the Californian actor recently shared the valuable life lessons that she has learned from playing such a strong willed character. In an interview with Variety, Moss discussed how becoming a mother to her first child in 2024 altered her approach to taking on the role of June. 'I cannot believe the difference this final season [now being a mother], and I had no idea that was going to happen. I can't watch certain scenes. When a person used to come up to me and say, "I just had a baby, and I can't watch the show," I had a little judgment, like, "Oh, God, get over it." Now, I totally get it. There are concepts I can't think about; there are articles I can't read in the news.' Further into the interview, the actor discussed how it wasn't only being a parent that shaped her changing view of the show, but also that her move to being an executive producer and director has changed things Ultimately, Moss said, one of the biggest changes she has seen is her newfound appreciation for portraying characters on screen. 'I have more respect for acting than I did before,' she explained. 'When I first started directing, I was very much like, I'm going to be a visual person. The first thing I learned on my first episode is that the performance is the only thing that matters. I love acting so much, but I don't overthink it; frankly, I don't put a lot of thinking into it at all. It's very important to me, but it's not serious. So, realising that nothing mattered except the performance was a revelation for me.' While Moss may have made her exit as June in The Handmaid's Tale in what was a fairly bittersweet ending, all roads lead to her character's potential revival in the upcoming sequel, The Testaments, where viewers may see June continue to fight against the Gileadean regime. Did Taylor Swift Make a Cameo in The Handmaid's Tale Finale? Showrunner's Cryptic Reply Sparks Buzz

Fans of The Handmaid's Tale are buzzing with one question: Did Taylor Swift make a surprise appearance in the final season? The speculation started after Episode 9 featured Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor's Version). Swifties quickly spotted a character shown only from behind in the same scene and started guessing it could be the singer herself. The way the character walked and the deliberate camera angle fueled the theory. Some viewers believe the use of Taylor's re-recorded track and the mystery figure are not a coincidence. When asked about the possibility of Taylor Swift appearing in the episode, showrunner Bruce Miller gave a carefully worded response. 'I can't say anything. I'm not allowed to say anything,' he told Variety. The interviewer stated that this only adds fuel to the fire, to which Miller replied, 'All right, I'm good at making things worse - that's how I make all of my money.' While this doesn't confirm anything, the lack of denial and the teasing tone have left fans convinced that there may be more to the story. Aside from the Swift cameo speculation, Bruce Miller shared how The Handmaid's Tale finale was always planned. 'Well, if you go back and watch the pilot, at the beginning of the pilot, you can hear her click that tape recorder that she clicks at the end of the series to start recording 'The Handmaid's Tale' in the audio - and we didn't go back and put that in, that was there,' he said. The final scene shows June (Elisabeth Moss) beginning to record her story in the Waterfords' destroyed home, tying back to her first voiceover monologue as Offred. Although The Handmaid's Tale has ended, the world of Gilead will continue in Hulu's upcoming adaptation of The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 sequel. Bruce Miller is leading the new series and working closely with Elisabeth Moss, who will return as a producer. Miller confirmed that June's story ends with The Handmaid's Tale, but The Testaments will explore what happens after.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Finale Ending Explained: June Walks Down Haunting Memory Lane in Poetic Closure

Elisabeth Moss' The Handmaid's Tale wrapped up its sixth season on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, with a haunting, contemplative finale. It brought June Osborne (Moss) full circle: back to the charred remains of the Waterfords' mansion. Seated in her old room, June sets out to chronicle her terrible odyssey in Gilead, reading the very same monologue that began the series as Offred. Her story, long defined by trauma and resistance, now emerges as her testimony and, ultimately, her legacy. "It isn't running away they're afraid of. We wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes, the ones you can open in yourself, given a cutting edge," her chilling voice-over runs. June revisits the ruins of her tormented past In a subdued but emotionally intense episode simply called The Handmaid's Tale, Boston is freed, and the resistance prevails in several former Gilead strongholds. But the finale shies away from the temptation of a victory lap. Instead, June walks by herself down a snow-covered city denuded of name — a terrain of memory, sorrow, and specters. Along the way, she imagines reunions with her missing friends, Rita, Moira, and Emily, mixing past and present, fantasy and fact. Flashbacks break June's loneliness: a glimpse of Emily, long presumed dead, undercover in Connecticut; a tense, heartbroken meeting with Serena Joy, now a refugee mother with nowhere to turn to. Their connection comes to a tentative peace as they agree to forgive each other in a quiet move that suggests healing. While some characters like Luke and Moira are dancing around bonfires and burning flags in celebration of Gilead's fall, June is gazing into the fire. And all she sees are the futures she's lost: a daughter, a lover, a normal life. Her heartbreak and narrative are unfinished. The series ender, written by Miller and directed by Moss, offers no grand solution, no reunion with Hannah, and no triumphant denouement. Instead, The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 finale ending concludes where it started: with June, single in a room that altered her life.

What Are The Eyes In 'The Handmaid's Tale'? The Reason Gilead's Secret Police Are Integral To The Final Series

There's so much dystopian symbolism in The Handmaid's Tale it can be hard to keep up. But one of the most unnerving and omnipresent has to be the 'Eyes'. In Margaret Atwood's novel and the TV adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale, there's a constant feeling that the characters, particularly the handmaids, are being watched. In The Republic of Gilead, the 'Eyes of God' or simply 'The Eyes' are the secret police. A paramilitary security service, their role is pure surveillance, tracking down anyone who opposes the regime and punishing them. The Eyes are made up of former CIA members who had helped the Sons of Jacob to overthrow the US Government in the Second American Civil War, which paved the way for the totalitarian state of Gilead. Their identity is either obvious – think of the typical image of a Secret Service agent in black suits, dark sunglasses and you've got the Eyes. When in uniform they drive matte-black Ford Transit vans with tinted windows and winged eyes painted on the sides. If that isn't creepy enough, some Eyes operate as plain clothed agents to better infiltrate the rings of dissent and spy on their fellow citizens. FIND OUT MORE ON THE ELLE COLLECTIVE There's no doubt the Eyes add to the paranoia and fear of Gilead's residents. There is constantly the feeling that they're being watched; as Offred notes anyone can be an Eye, even Marthas who spy on wealthy households, but they're normally loyal men willing to do anything, torture included, to protect the republic and patrol its borders. 'Under His Eye' is also used frequently as a farewell between Handmaids and refers to the all-seeing presence of something altogether more powerful, and evil. As the final season of The Handmaid's Tale comes to a close, it's Nick's status as an Eye, which has been ambiguous throughout the series, that really comes into question. How much is the Commander a dedicated Eye on the one hand, and how strong are his ties with Mayday, the rebels fighting against the secret police force and everything Gilead stands for, on the other? And will we ever find out the whole truth before we have to say 'Under His Eye' to the whole series which has kept us captivated for years?
