Distracted driving statistics revealed in local Ohio counties
(WKBN)- April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is rolling out a new campaign to remind drivers of the dangers. In Ohio, it is illegal to use or hold a cell phone or electronic device in your hand or lap while driving on Ohio roads. If a law enforcement officer sees a violation, they can pull you over. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, more than 50,000 crashes between 2020 and 2024 occurred because of distracted driving. Of those, 157 were fatal crashes that resulted in 168 deaths. Traffic safety experts believe that there are three types of distracted driving: Manual – Anything that takes one or both hands off the wheel. Visual – Anything that causes drivers to take their eyes off the road. Cognitive – Anything that takes your mind off the also said 26,000 people were injured in these crashes. Here are the countywide numbers: Mahoning County- 1,238 Trumbull County- 976 Columbiana County- 276Cuyahoga County had the most with 4,857. Unpaid toll text scam warning issued; have you received them?
Have you received any text messages about an unpaid toll payment? [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission said it is likely part of an ongoing nationwide texting scam, according to a social media post. 'The Ohio Turnpike does NOT send text messages requesting payment for unpaid tolls,' the Ohio Turnpike stated. 'The Ohio Turnpike will send up to three invoices by U.S. Mail to collect unpaid tolls.' They added that if you received a text message from Reliant Capital Solutions LLC, a collection agency for the Ohio Attorney's Office, contact them at 866-738-3182 before making any payment.
