Hearts confirm signing of Oisin McEntee from Walsall on three-year deal

Republic of Ireland youth international Oisin McEntee is set to join Hearts on a three-year deal this summer when his contract with League Two side Walsall expires. The 24-year-old midfielder and Newcastle academy product spent five years with the Magpies, captaining the under-18 and under-23 sides. McEntee had his first taste of Scottish football on loan at Morton in 2021-22 before joining Walsall, where he made 79 appearances across three campaigns. Hearts head coach Derek McInnes said: 'It's great that we've been able to get this deal done, and we can now welcome Oisin to the club. 'It became clear in our conversations that Oisin is hungry, he wants to learn and improve, and he wants to be part of what we're trying to do here at Hearts. 'He's a ball player whilst being physically imposing, and an extremely versatile player. He's played in defence and midfield, so to have options around his positioning is a big plus. 'Oisin's gained a lot of experience down south and he has knowledge of Scottish football too, which is a bonus, and I'm sure he'll fit in well to the squad we're building.' Hearts complete three-year deal for former Ireland U21 international

Hearts have sealed a deal for former Ireland underage international Oisin McEntee. McEntee, who can play in defence or midfield, will make the switch to the Scottish Premier League once his contract with League 2 Walsall expires this summer. The 24-year-old has signed a three-year contract and becomes the Jambos' fourth summer signing after Christian Borchgrevink, Alexandros Kyziridis and Elton Kabangu. McEntee joined Newcastle United's academy as a youngster and went on to captain their U18 and U23 teams. He had a loan spell in Scotland with Greenock Morton before joining Walsall in a permanent two-year deal in 2022. McEntee made 79 appearances for the Saddlers and has also been capped for Ireland from U17 level up to U21s. Hearts boss Derek McInnes said: 'It's great that we've been able to get this deal done and we can now welcome Oisin to the club. 'It became clear in our conversations that Oisin is hungry, he wants to learn and improve, and he wants to be part of what we're trying to do here at Hearts. Cox hoping James's Delight can mix it with the best

The four-year-old made rapid progress last season, ending the campaign running at Ascot on Champions Day. Unplaced on his first two outings of this campaign, though, he was sent off a 22-1 chance for the Group Two but under Oisin Murphy he just prevailed in a blanket finish, with Cox citing rain before the race as a potential key factor. 'We were over the moon. He was very courageous. Oisin gave him a lovely ride and I was thrilled for his connections, Paul and Clare Rooney,' said Cox. 'He was first class, he showed a lot of courage. That storm of rain just prior to the race was undoubtedly a bit of a help and he's come out of the race really well. 'It wasn't a total surprise that he has performed well at this level because when things have gone right for him he was impressive in his Listed races in France. 'When conditions are right, he's a very capable performer.' When asked if he would need cut in the ground to take up his entry in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes Cox replied: 'He would appreciate decent ground or even slower. 'Oisin said the track was still riding quick enough at the time so that rain was a help, without a shadow of doubt, and I've still got hopes that on a good day, with a bit of luck in running, he can perform at the highest level – which he's proved here.'

Clive Cox felt vindicated when James's Delight caused a minor surprise in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.
