Vince Gill may have country roots, but he's not just a country guy

He has slowed down a little on the album front, releasing his last solo effort, the autobiographical 'Okie,' in 2019, and 'Sweet Memories,' a tribute to Ray Price that he made with steel player Paul Franklin in 2023. He hasn't gone out on tour in a while, either — at least, not by himself. That's because for the past nine years he has been doing something that some people view as a bit of a left turn — playing guitar and singing as Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Gill recalls somebody asking Eagles main man Don Henley why he'd asked a 'country guy' to be in his rock band. 'And [Henley] smiled and he said, 'because he knows how to be in a band.'' Advertisement That was a great affirmation, says Gill. For most of his career, he's been the front man; his albums and his tours have had his name alone on them. But he's also been a session guy throughout his career. He's been the harmony singer for other people, and the guitar player for other people. So, he says, 'I don't differentiate. Whether it's my show or it's their show, it's all about playing the music to the best of your ability. I don't need the spotlight. I'm comfortable with it, but I don't have to have it. It's been fun for me to not have to be the decider of all things.' He was able to surprise Henley with what a country guy could do, though. 'I was playing power chords on [Eagles member Advertisement The Eagles are currently off the road for the summer, which has given Gill the opportunity 'to put my bunch of knucklehead musicians together and go out and see if I can remember any of my songs.' At the end of the day, he says he's out there because he misses his songs. 'I spent too much time writing them and digging them out of the dirt and the blood and the guts. It's important to me to honor what I've accomplished' by playing them, he says. He also expects to put out some new music this summer. 'It's so odd to think about a new way to do things,' he observes, 'because we've spent our whole lives putting out a 10- or 12-song record every couple of years, and now all the rules are changed and the way you can accommodate and get music to people is so different.' By his reckoning, he's written some 150 songs in the last three or four years; he recorded a bunch of them last year and is now looking for a way to put more than just the usual 10 songs out. 'I did ['These Days'] however many years ago it's been, and that was 43 new songs on four different CDs. So, something to that effect.' In short, Vince Gill plans on continuing to do what he's been doing for half a century. 'The only goal I ever had was to pay the rent,' he says with a laugh. 'I don't know that I ever set goals for myself. I never did try to plan it, try to write the script before it happened. I always was good at living in the moment, and I still do it to this day. I don't have any reservations about the past and I don't worry too much about tomorrow. All I've got is this moment right here and I'm OK in it.' Redbud trees are blooming statewide. Here's how to see the state tree around OKC, Tulsa

The Oklahoma redbud tree is a staple in the Sooner State, and the rain coming right in the middle of the budding season only makes it better. The state tree typically begins blooming in March and April before the iconic pink buds start showing up. Once the trees have budded, the pink and lavender flowers are almost inescapable throughout the summer before they turn golden yellow in the fall. The state, though, has two different redbud trees: the eastern redbud and the Oklahoma redbud. The Sooner variant tends to bloom a couple of weeks earlier and is a few inches smaller than the eastern redbud. Whether you're looking for a place to see them or need to take the quintessential Oklahoma family portrait, here are some of the best places to enjoy the Oklahoma redbuds this spring. According to an employee, though they have not yet bloomed for the season, Myriad Gardens' redbud display continues to instill Okie pride in its guests. The Garden's spring and summer season will begin to fill up as the weather warms and the buds begin to bloom. The garden is free to the public, and redbud trees can be found in the northeast and southwest corners of the grounds. You can find 750 acres of the Turkey Mountain forest along the Arkansas River. Though the grounds sit just south of downtown Tulsa, walking on the trails is just as all-encompassing as a county trail. The urban wilderness has a variety of native trees, including Post, Blackjack Oak, Hickory and, of course, redbud. The forest's river access also makes it an open corridor for foxes, raccoons, opossums and more wild animals to join you on your trek to see the budding flowers. On the north side of Tulsa, you can experience lots of programming and redbuds at the Redbud Festival Park in Owasso. The Redbud District in Tulsa is centered around the urban beautification of the Redbud tree. Year-round, you can stroll through the storefronts, green spaces and events at the park. The newest event for their spring season is the Spring Fling on April 12, where guests can enjoy master gardener seminars, food trucks and plant sales all under the buds of the Redbuds. But if you want to hold out for a month, you can catch the Redbud Days in May with music, food and more. The Redbud Valley Nature Preserve closed its doors in 2021 for a temporary closure, and trails have remained closed to this day, with no anticipated reopening. However, the Oxley Nature Center in Tulsa hopes to continue the Redbud exposure for now. The center includes a few Redbud Valley trails throughout the property, which are in seemingly identical formation since they were discovered. The 804-acre nature center sits just under New York City's Central Park's size of 843 acres, making this a full day of exploring with over 700 unique species of plants. Monday Munchies: Bentonville's Blu Fish House

It's been a long while since I last ate at Blu Fish House, so I put it on my revisit list. Between the lines: It's worth pointing out Blu Fish House is not the same as Blu Fin in Springdale. The setup: The warehouse-looking eatery is tucked into the residential neighborhood near The Momentary in Bentonville, across the street from Brothers Meethouse. A fenced wall around the patio area, which is at the front of the building, makes Blu look uninviting. But if you push through a clear vinyl hanging gate, a laid-back, shabby chic cluster of tables and friendly staff appear. I was glad to see sushi on the menu. For some reason, my mind had the place fixed as a cod, tilapia and shrimp site, but it's much more eclectic. The food: Short on time, I asked the server for sushi menu recommendations. He pointed me to the "Spoke," a roll with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, snow crab or eel, avocado, crispy jalapeño and eel sauce ($20). I'm not over the moon about eel, but the other ingredients work great in this roll. The flavors all showed up for the party and the fish tasted fresh, at least to my Okie palate.
