Okwuosa stays on to keep Cats safe at the back

PETALING JAYA: Kuching City captain and defensive stalwart James Okwuosa (pic) has committed to another season with the Cats and he's hoping to make Borneo City his long term footballing home.
The 34-year-old Nigerian centreback, who joined from Police last year, played a pivotal role in Kuching's impressive fourth place finish in the Super League, an achievement few saw coming.
His leadership and consistency at the back, alongside Japanese enforcer Yuki Tanigawa and local talent Rodney Celvin Akwensivie, formed the bedrock of the team's success.
'I still have a year left on my contract with Kuching, so yes, I'll be playing next season. I really hope to continue beyond that.
'The people of Sarawak have been kind and supportive, it feels like home,' he said.
Reflecting on their recent campaign, Okwuosa added that it was a long season but what they achieved was truly special.
'Everyone involved in the club should be proud. Hopefully, we can build on this and go even further next year.'
The former Orlando Pirates player was a constant presence in the side, featuring in 28 matches across all competitions and captaining the team in every one.
In the Super League alone, he averaged nine recoveries and three clearances per game.
His Malaysia Cup performances were equally solid, with an average of 12 recoveries and three clearances across three matches.
Despite those impressive numbers, Okwuosa remains focused on the collective.
'I don't dwell on individual stats. For me, stability and unity in the team come first. I always strive to ensure those around me play with confidence and freedom.'
