Recently, in Mattituck on Long Island's North Fork, he added innkeeper to the list with the opening of the Old Mill Inn. ('I was looking for an architectural challenge,' he explains.) The inn occupies a former mill that's over 200 years old, which he had lifted five feet onto new pilings to protect it from flooding. On the bottom floor, there's a locally driven restaurant with a waterfront deck and a menu featuring Peconic Bay oysters and North Fork wines, including those from Old Sound Vineyard, which Martignetti owns with his wife, Angela Ledgerwood. Upstairs is a single art-filled three-bedroom apartment with water views and pine flooring made from the building's original centuries-old joists. 'When you're there,' says Martignetti, 'you're back in time.' $1,200 a night, three night minimum; Covet This English Perfume Makers Launch a Line of Furniture and Fabric By Aimee Farrell When they founded their fragrance brand, Moro Dabron, in 2020, Eliza Dabron and Austin Moro were working in the London design industry — Dabron at the New Craftmaker, a furniture showroom, and Moro with the Swedish designer Beata Heuman. They've long drawn inspiration from English homes and gardens that balance rambling romance with clipped restraint. Their candles, for example, come in sculptural porcelain vessels that reference eighth-century stem cups and the florist Constance Spry's Fulham Pottery. The pair's latest endeavor — a 25-piece collection of furniture, lighting and textiles, launching this week — feels like a natural extension of their carefully constructed world. Produced in England, items include handblown glass globes suspended from blackened bronze chains that channel 17th-century apothecary lights and armchairs whose undulating backrests borrow from the serpentine silhouettes of 18th-century portrait frames. The muted palette of the fabrics, which range from twill stripes to dotted ticking, is influenced by the contemporary British painter Howard Hodgkin's one-time studio inside a former dairy in Bloomsbury. From $90, Stay Here A Hotel in Brittany Where Every Room Has Ocean Views By Fiona Castro Le Brun Brittany's northern coast is known for its pink-hued granite cliffs, dramatic tides and exceptional seafood. Les Bassans, a new opening from Fontenille Collection (a French boutique hotel group focused on restoring historic properties), offers a new vantage point for the area with its 25 sea-facing rooms in Perros-Guirec. 'It feels like being on a boat,' says the Fontenille co-founder Guillaume Foucher. 'The tide, the light, the view — it all shifts constantly.' Inside, the restaurant, bar and other common spaces are wrapped floor to ceiling in oak, evoking a Belle Époque cruise. The menu changes daily depending on the local catch, while cocktails are made with oceanic ingredients such as seaweed-infused gin. Each room has a telescope for aquatic observation; the bathroom tiles are made by Gwilen, a startup that transforms marine sediment into design objects. From the property, guests can walk the nearby coastal trail, surf the breaks or boat out to the Sept-Îles archipelago, where seals nap and white northern gannets gather en masse. The birds, called fous de Bassan in French, inspired the hotel's name. 'When they arrive,' says Foucher, 'it looks like snow on the rocks.' From about $160 a night, Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

New owners of Old Mill Inn promise makeover after taking over Brodie hotel and restaurant

The new owners of the Old Mill Inn on the A96 have promised to give the Brodie hotel and restaurant a major makeover. Lossiemouth-based hotel and accommodation firm MacAli Group recently bought the Moray hotel. Now chief executive Mohammed Ali has vowed to 'bring it back to the old days'. The company already runs many hotels and restaurants including, the MacRaj Indian restaurant in Lossiemouth and West End Hotel in Nairn. MacAli Group has promised to develop the Old Mill Inn as a country pub with a well-stocked bar serving comfort food. Meanwhile, the hotel will be refurbished to become a venue for summer weddings and other outdoor events. The beer garden – which is currently closed – will be developed further and a play area for children will follow. Plans will be submitted to increase the number of guest rooms. MacAli Group chief executive Mohammed Ali said: 'We are very excited to welcome this new business to our portfolio. 'I have lived in this area all my life and have fond memories from being young and knowing the Old Mill as being a pub and then seeing it move to fine dining. 'MacAli Group is going to bring it back to the old days of real pub food for all the family. 'We are a family-run business and we are proud to be bringing back more family friendly venues across Scotland.' The former Victorian Corn Mill dating back to the late 1800s underwent a major refurbishment in 2018 by the previous owners, Sophie and David McLean, creating a boutique country hotel. It has five ensuite letting rooms, all double or larger, which have their own character with sturdy wooden furniture and plush trimmings. It was previously on the market for £495,000.

Scotland's four 'best beer gardens' to enjoy drink in the sun this summer named

With the weather heating up, now is the perfect time to enjoy a pint outdoors. Scotland's "best beer gardens" have been crowned. A new list of the top 30 beer gardens across Britain has been unveiled ahead of summer. On Friday, May 1, Big 7 Travel shared a list of the "30 Best Beer Gardens in the UK". The list includes the pubs and bars that feature the best outdoor space to enjoy a drink when the sun is shining. A total of four Scottish beer gardens are included in the nationwide roundup. The highest-placing is The Old Mill Inn in Pitlochry, which comes in at number four on the UK-wide list. The Old Mill Inn is located in the heart of Pitlochry in Perth and Kinross. The pub dates back to the 18th century and was originally a mill—and still features a working water wheel to this day. The Old Mill Inn features a 'beer tent', where visitors can make the most of the summer. Guests can enjoy a drink in the sunshine, while wood-fired pizzas are also available on selected days. Big 7 Travel wrote: "The beer garden is tucked away to the side and back of the pub, offering a secretive recluse away from the town's main street, making it the perfect place to enjoy a quiet drink. "Furthermore, the gentle splashes from the nearby stream add a relaxing feel to the atmosphere, and the bridge that connects the pub to the beer garden adds an extra layer of privacy and serenity." Following behind in second place for Scotland on Big 7 Travel's list is the Ben Nevis Inn in Fort William. The hotel and pub, which is housed within a 200-year-old converted barn at the foot of Ben Nevis, placed at number 10 on the overall list. The beer garden at the Ben Nevis Inn allows customers to enjoy food and drink surrounded by the hills of Glen Nevis. The venue serves up a variety of sandwiches and burgers, as well as a large selection of beers, ciders, wines, and spirits. The experts described the Ben Nevis Inn as "arguably one of the best beer gardens in the world". They singled out the pub's "lush" green surroundings in particular. Big 7 Travel stated: "Set at the foot of Ben Nevis, this pub was originally a stone-built barn to house cattle built in 1806, and if walls could tell stories, the walls of this pub would be award-winning novelists! "Views up towards the snow-capped peak of Ben Nevis are hard to beat, but even the lush green fields and wild hills surrounding the pub make this not just one of the best beer gardens in the UK, but arguably one of the best beer gardens in the world." Meanwhile, coming in at number 17 on the UK-wide roundup is The Dores Inn in Inverness. The Highlands pub and restaurant pub features outdoor tables and benefits from panoramic views down the length of Loch Ness. According to the experts, The Dores Inn's beer garden is "fantastic". The pub's outdoor space allows visitors to enjoy drinks overlooking the world-famous loch and the surrounding rolling hills in the summer sun. Elsewhere, the fourth and final Scottish pub to be featured on Big 7 Travel's list of the best beer gardens in the UK is Cold Town House in Edinburgh. The bar is located on the famous Grassmarket in the Scottish capital, below the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Cold Town House's beer garden takes the form of a rooftop bar with views of the castle. The experts applauded the vistas as "breathtaking" and the "stuff of dreams". For the full list of the "30 Best Beer Gardens in the UK", visit the Big 7 Travel website.
