A California-based food producer has issued a voluntary recall of ready-to-eat sandwiches and other items sold in four Western states, following warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about potential contamination with listeria, bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
Fresh & Ready Foods pointed Newsweek to its company press release and did not share any additional statement when reached for comment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infection is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., with 1,600 people infected each year and 260 killed.

What To Know
Fresh & Ready Foods, headquartered in San Fernando, recalled dozens of products on May 10.
The recalled items were distributed between April 18 and 28 in vending and breakroom areas in corporate offices, medical buildings and health care facilities in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington.
The products include torta, ciabatta, focaccia and croissant sandwiches, pasta and snack items, with "Use By" dates ranging from April 22 to May 19.
The recalled products are labeled Fresh & Ready Foods, Fresh Take Crave Away, City Point Market and Fresh Food to Go.

The issue was identified through environmental monitoring conducted by the FDA during a site inspection, which resulted in a positive finding for listeria on a piece of equipment.
"Fresh & Ready Foods has taken immediate corrective actions including removing equipment to address the issue to ensure ongoing food safety and compliance with FDA guidance," the company wrote in its announcement.
While no illnesses have been reported as of the FDA's announcement, the risk is considered significant enough to prompt a full recall.
