22 injured as Russia launches 499 drones, missiles at Ukraine
Russia mounted a huge airborne attack on Ukraine for the fifth night in a row, launching 499 drones and missiles at targets across the country that injured at least 22 people. Photo by Sergey Kozlov/EPA-EFE June 9 (UPI) -- Russia launched 499 drones and ballistic and cruise missiles against seven provinces across Ukraine, of which the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have downed all but 22. At least 22 people were injured in provinces from the frontline regions of Sumy and Kharkiv in the east, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south and Rivne in the northwest, which Gov. Oleksandr Koval said had sustained the heaviest bombardment since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. "According to preliminary information, one civilian was injured. Huge gratitude for the professionalism of our air defense forces, which destroyed a large number of enemy targets," Koval wrote in a post on X. Kyiv and the surrounding area also came under sustained attack with air raid warnings sounding for more than 10 hours, but no casualties were reported. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russian forces launched 479 attack and decoy drones from multiple directions, four ballistic missiles, 11 cruise missiles and five air-launched cruise and anti-radar missiles from above the Black Sea. The air force said its fighter aircraft, air defense and electronic warfare units and mobile fire groups were able to destroy or otherwise "neutralize" 460 of the drones and all but three of the missiles, two of which never made it to their targets. However, some made it through with explosions heard in at least 10 locations and debris from downed projectiles falling in 17 places. Most of the cruise missiles came from Russia's Saratov region, where air bases have twice sustained attacks from Ukrainian UAV assaults in the past week. Ukrainian special forces claimed another strike overnight on an airfield deep inside Russian territory in Nizhny Novgorod region, 260 miles east of Moscow, damaging two fighter jets on the ground. "According to preliminary information, two units of enemy aircraft were hit (probably MiG-31 and Su-30/34 aircraft). The results of the combat operation are being clarified," said the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Guardian said Savasleyka airfield was home to MiG-31K warplanes used to deploy air-to-surface ballistic missiles of a type that have been used to attack Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian forces. Footage was also circulating online of a drone strike even further afield in Cheboksary in the Chuvashia Republic on an industrial facility producing guidance systems parts used in motorized howitzers, short-range ballistic missiles and both loitering and attack drones. Regional Gov. Oleg Nikolayev, issued a statement confirming production at the VNIIR Progress factory had been paused but that there had been no injuries. The plant is under U.S., European Union and British sanctions targeting military industrial facilities and Russia's ability to evade Western efforts to target its war machine. The operating company was sanctioned by the United States in 2023, followed by the EU and Britain in 2024.

Russia fired record 479 drones at Ukraine overnight
KYIV: Moscow fired a record 479 drones at Ukraine, including on the western region of Rivne that has been largely spared from attacks, Kyiv said Monday, also claiming an attack on a Russian factory hundreds of miles east of Moscow. Russia has escalated its attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks, which Kyiv says demonstrate that the Kremlin has no intention of stopping its more than three-year invasion and is not serious about peace talks. Moscow said Monday its strikes are continued retaliation for a bold Ukrainian attack on its bomber planes parked deep inside Russia, including in Siberia, that infuriated the Kremlin. The overnight Russian attacks caused damage in several Ukrainian regions. There were no reports of people killed or mass casualties. 'Enemy air strikes were recorded in 10 spots,' the Ukrainian air force said. The mayor of the western city of Rivne, Oleksandr Tretyak, called it 'the largest attack' on the region since the start of the war. Kyiv mayor says Russian drones, missiles trigger fires, injure eight Regional governor Oleksandr Koval said 70 buildings – including private houses and a nursery – were damaged in the attack. Russia said it had targeted an airfield near the village of Dubno in the Rivne region. 'This is one of the retaliatory strikes against terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime on Russian military airfields,' its defence ministry said. Russia had vowed revenge last week and had already called strikes on Kyiv retaliation to the brazen Ukrainian operation. Ukraine also said it had launched its own overnight strike on an electronics factory that makes part for Russian drones, in the city of Cheboskary in Chuvashia – some 600 kilometres (372 miles) east of Moscow. Russian officials said the facility had to temporarily suspend production after the attack. 'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' Chuvashia Governor Oleg Nikolayev said on Telegram, adding: 'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory.' Ukraine's army said the factory manufactured 'antennas for Shahed' (drones). Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Russia said a Ukrainian strike killed one person in its border Kursk region Monday. The acting governor of the region, Alexander Khinstein, said the strike hit a 'cultural-service centre' in the Rylsky district, killing a 64-year-old man.

Ukraine shoots down nearly 500 drones, missiles in Russian record strike, Air Force says
Ukraine's Air Force said on June 9 that it intercepted a total of 479 Russian drones and missiles during a record-high wave of strikes overnight. According to the official statement, Russia launched 499 weapons, including 479 Shahed‑type attack drones and various decoy drones, four Kh‑47M2 "Kinzhal" air-launched ballistic missiles, 10 Kh‑101 cruise missiles, three Kh‑22 cruise missiles over the Black Sea, two Kh‑31P anti‑radar missiles, and one Kh‑35 cruise missile from occupied Crimea. Ukraine had reportedly neutralized 479 of the incoming targets, with 292 were shot down, and 187 jammed or lost via electronic warfare. In Kyiv Oblast, air‑raid sirens lasted over ten hours, according to Governor Mykola Kalashnyk. Air defences shot down Russian drones. No civilian casualties were reported. Two houses, a car, and an outbuilding in Boryspil district were reportedly damaged. In Rivne Oblast, Governor Oleksandr Koval described the night as very heavy. One civilian was reportedly injured. The attack, according to Koval, was the largest since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war. In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, one person was injured, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov. Over the day, 498 strikes reportedly struck 14 populated areas. In Kherson Oblast, numerous towns were hit by drones, artillery, and airstrikes. Three apartment blocks, 13 houses, a farm, and vehicles were damaged. Four civilians were injured, the governor said. In Kharkiv Oblast, nine villages were hit. Seven civilians suffered minor injuries, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Russian forces reportedly used 22 unguided aviation rockets, 18 guided bombs (KAB), 6 Geran (Shahed) drones, 4 unspecified UAVs, and 1 Molniya drone. Civil damage included houses, a store, a camp, and vehicles. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukrainian defences downed six UAVs at night, Governor Serhii Lysak said. A farm, houses, and vehicles in the region were reportedly hit. In Sumy Oblast, Russian forces launched nearly 90 strikes across 35 settlements, injuring nine civilians, local authorities reported. Shops, a school, homes, and cars were reportedly damaged. Authorities evacuated 21 people. In Cherkasy Oblast, air defences shot down 33 Russian drones overnight. No injuries were reported, but falling debris damaged four houses, a farm outbuilding, and a car in the Cherkasy district.
