Michaels will revive beloved Joann brands after acquisition. Here's what to expect
Joann has cascaded the closure of its 800 stores since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, leaving a gap in communities like Pensacola where buying fabric supplies inside a store can be difficult. Michaels, the largest arts and crafts retail chain in North America, seems eager to fill that gap after it announced on Thursday that it had acquired Joann's intellectual property and private label brands, including the Big Twist brands. "We're honored to have the opportunity to welcome JOANN customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they are looking for at Michaels," said David Boone, Chief Executive Officer at Michaels. "This acquisition allows us to better serve both new and existing customers, respond to rising demand across categories, and build on our momentum as the destination for creating and celebrating in North America." Michaels says that it plans to expand its fabric, sewing and yarn assortment by adding over 600 products across new and existing brands. Here's what the move means for Joann and Michaels customers. Michaels has seen a sizable increase in demand for fabrics since Joann filed for bankruptcy in January. Searches for "fabric" have increased on its website by 77%, according to the company. In response, Michaels says that it has increased its fabric assortment in over 680 stores and plans to expand the selection to 280 more in 2025. Michaels currently operates over 1,300 stores across North America. The arts and crafts giant says it has seen a similar demand for sewing supplies, which led the company to work on expanding options there, too. Here's a look at the new supplies it has added or plans to add: New Brother and SINGER sewing machines More than 50 new needle crafting kits from DMC and Loops & Threads More than 10 Pellon stabilizers and interfacing, specialty scissors and threat packs, with Pellon cut-to-order batting coming in August New products from Clover, FISKARS, Coast & Clark and VELCRO The Oliso Smart Iron Knitters and crocheters aren't to be forgotten. Michaels says that it is actively in the process of expanding its yarn assortment by 25% in 2025. Here's a look at what to expect: Over 60 new Loops & Threads offerings launching in-store and online in June New and expanding collections from Red Heart, Bernat and Lion Brand this summer Expanding Amigurumi kits with over 12 new seasonal offerings over the holiday season Welcoming Joann brands like Twist Value Plus, Big Twist Twinkle, Big Twist Posh and Big Twist Baby Bear, which it says will be available later this year If you're not sure where to start, Michaels created a dedicated landing page to welcome Joann customers.
