Money being raised for new veterans memorial in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Fundraising has begun for a new monument in downtown Springfield.
The Springfield Veterans Activity Committee, a non-profit group of veterans, is starting to raise money to purchase a new monument, to commemorate and honor the group of U.S. veterans who served during what is known as the Global War on Terrorism.
Ollie's Law advisory committee members announced
Joe DeCaro, the Director of Veteran Services for the City of Springfield, said the Global War on Terrorism began with the Persian Gulf War in 1990 and technically isn't even over today but he said it is time to recognize all of the veterans who have fought.
'Just seeing a veteran and just thanking them for their service, a lot of times is enough and the monument is just a way not only to recognize the war and veterans but also to say thank you to them,' DeCaro said.
The monument will be added to Veterans Way on Court Street in downtown Springfield… joining alongside the monuments for World War 1, World War 2, Korean War, Vietnam War and a monument for Marine veterans.
