The arrears were meant to cover dues of Rs 12,812 each for sanitation workers for Feb2021. However, an arrear of Rs 53 crore was approved for Om Prakash Gurjar, a sanitation worker in the Kishanpol zone. The inflated amount cleared five levels of verification and was digitally signed before being forwarded to the finance department, which detected the anomaly and halted the payment.
JMC-Heritage commissioner Arun Kumar Hasija said an inquiry has been ordered to find out how such a massive oversight occurred.
He added that a standard operating procedure is being drafted to strengthen verification and past payments will also be reviewed.
"This is a clear case of negligence and human error in typing, which should not have happened. One component in the arrear payment was Rs 5,300, but a typing mistake inflated it. The bill passed through multiple levels of approval, yet no one noticed the unusually high total. This lapse is unacceptable, and we are also reviewing past payments," said Hasija.
Sanyukt Valmiki Evam Safai Shramik Sangh has also called for an investigation. "There must be an impartial probe, and strict action against the responsible officers and employees," said Nandkishore Dandoriya of the organisation.
