Seminar celebrates 70 years of Oman-India diplomatic relations

Muscat – In celebration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of India, the Embassy of Oman in New Delhi organised a seminar highlighting the rich historical ties between the two nations spanning over 5,000 years on Wednesday. Held in collaboration with Jamia Millia Islamia University, the event focused on the extensive trade and cultural connections that have shaped relations between Oman and India. The seminar underscored the significance of Omani ports in Muscat, Suhar and Qalhat in maritime trade, while also exploring the impact of cultural exchange on language, arts, architecture, and the promotion of pluralism and religious tolerance by Indian communities in Oman. Ashok Kumar Attri, former ambassador to Oman, shared his personal experiences of living in Oman, highlighting the Indian community's long-standing presence and the strong diplomatic bonds between the two nations. Prashant Bissi, Director General of Indian Council for World Affairs, emphasised the historical richness of Oman-India relations, noting the friendship, mutual benefits and principle of coexistence at the core of the diplomatic ties. He presented a research paper titled 'History of Omani-Indian Relations and the Impact of Pluralism and the Culture of Difference on Religious Pluralism and Civilisational Understanding'. Dr Saud bin Abdullah al Zadjali, a researcher from Oman, delivered a working paper titled 'Historical Reasons for the Strength of Relations from Western and Eastern Perspectives', examining India's strategic role in the Gulf region and its emphasis on diversity to promote mutual interests and civilisational dialogue. The symposium was attended by Indian officials, former Indian ambassadors to Oman, academics and students interested in the cultural and historical relations between the two countries. In closing, the symposium called for continuation of cultural and scientific dialogues and strengthening cooperation in economic and educational fields, with the aim of further consolidating the longstanding relations and opening new avenues for future collaboration between Oman and India.

Muscat – Oman and India further strengthened their historical and cultural ties with the launch of a book – titled Mandvi to Muscat: Indian Community and the Shared History of India and Oman – on Sunday. The book was jointly released by H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, and his Indian counterpart Dr S Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the 8th Indian Ocean Conference being held in Muscat. The book explores the deep-rooted connections between the two nations, tracing centuries of trade, migration and cultural exchange. It highlights the role of the Indian community in Oman and the enduring relation between the two countries, which has evolved from historic maritime links to a modern strategic partnership. The book launch coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Oman and India, which was marked by the unveiling of a commemorative logo. The initiative reflects both nations' commitment to honouring their shared past while fostering future cooperation in trade, investment and energy security. Following the launch, H E Sayyid Badr posted on X, 'A pleasure to welcome dear friend Dr S Jaishankar for the 8th Indian Ocean Conference. We also celebrated 70 years of Oman-India diplomatic relations, a testament to the enduring partnership between our two countries, and launched a commemorative book that chronicles our shared history and the deep bonds that continue to flourish.' On his part, Jaishankar said that he was delighted to meet H E Sayyid Badr. 'So glad we could jointly release the logo celebrating the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Also, jointly released a book – Mandvi to Muscat .' The release of Mandvi to Muscat underscores the significance of people-to-people ties in shaping Oman-India relations and serves as a testament to the longstanding bilateral friendship.

Muscat – A delegation from the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) last week visited India to strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations in the fields of special economic zones, free zones, and industrial areas. The visit also aimed to attract investments and facilitate the exchange of expertise and best practices between the two countries. The Omani delegation, led by H E Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of OPAZ and Undersecretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, included CEOs from key industrial and logistics sector entities such as Madayn (the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates), Salalah Free Zone, and Khazaen Economic City. During the visit, the delegation toured Indian industrial and economic institutions, including Jindal Iron and Steel Group's project in Angul, Odisha, where they observed steel manufacturing operations. They also visited OP Jindal Global University to learn about its academic programmes, research centres, and facilities. Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Oman and India, the Embassy of Oman in India, in cooperation with OPAZ, hosted a business forum on February 6. The event was attended by representatives from more than 80 Indian companies across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, food, medical products, and energy. During the forum, the Omani delegation presented a detailed working paper highlighting investment opportunities in the regions under OPAZ's oversight. The presentation outlined incentives available to investors and priority sectors within the special economic zones and free zones. Oman Law House also provided an overview of the country's legislative and regulatory frameworks. Addressing the forum, H E Dheeb emphasised the significance of Oman-India relations, noting that India is one of Oman's most important investment partners. 'Special economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities play a vital role in attracting investments and enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries. We encourage Indian investors to explore the opportunities available in the sultanate,' he said. The Omani delegation's visit and the business forum reaffirmed the commitment of Oman and India to deepening bilateral trade ties and fostering collaboration in sectors critical to their economic growth.

Oman-India Business Forum to boost ties

Muscat: Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) organised on Tuesday the Oman-India Business Forum. The event was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The forum aims to establish sustainable cooperation based on active participation, innovation and benefiting from strength points of the two countries' economies. It also targets expanding investment opportunities and joint Omani-Indian projects. Moreover, the Oman-India Business forum focused on a spectrum of economic fields, such as chemicals, power electronics, engineering, manufacturing, construction, ICT services and consultations, communications, solar energy, health, agriculture, food security, infrastructure, water treatment, tourism, art, culture and durable electrical consumer goods. Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry underlined the importance of the Oman-India Business Forum as a strategic platform that brings together business leaders and investors from Oman and India. The forum, he added, also constitutes an opportunity to open up new vistas of growth and development for the business relations between the two countries. He noted that the forum focuses on main economic sectors that are considered as growth accelerators. The OCCI Chairman affirmed the commitment of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry to enhancing business partnerships between the private sector in the two countries. Several B2B meetings were held between businesspeople from Oman and India. The meetings explored available investment opportunities. The forum was attended by Qais Mohammed Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of India and Harsha VardhanAgarwal, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
