Al Bashayer stun Seeb in five-set OVL thriller
Muscat: Al Bashayer Club secured an exciting 3-2 victory over Seeb on Monday evening in a match held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, as part of the final qualifiers of the Oman First Division Volleyball League. The match began with high competitiveness, as both teams traded leads in the first set. Al Bashayer capitalised on individual errors from Seeb and benefited from the attacking brilliance of its Uzbek professional, Islam, alongside Mazen al Hashemi. Despite strong resistance from Seeb, led by Ismail al Haidi and Saud al Maamari, Al Bashayer claimed the first set 25-21. In the second set, Al Bashayer continued to dominate as Seeb players seemed to lose focus. Despite efforts from their professional player Doglan to narrow the gap, A -Bashayer took the set with the same score: 25-21. Seeb bounced back strongly in the third set, asserting control from the start by taking a 4-0 lead, exploiting Al Bashayer's complacency. Seeb won the set convincingly 25-17. The fourth set was intense and evenly matched, with both teams trading points until a 24-24 tie. Seeb's experience gave them the edge to take the set 26-24, forcing a decisive fifth set. In the final set, the match reached peak excitement, with both teams battling fiercely until the end. Ultimately, Al Bashayer managed to seal the victory 20-18, earning a valuable win that reshuffled the standings. AL SALAM TAKE CHARGE In another match of the second phase of the league qualifiers, Al Salam Club earned a well-deserved straight-set victory over Majees in a match held at the Sohar Sports Complex. Al Salam controlled the match from the start, thanks to the outstanding performance of their Bahraini Mohammed Yaqoub and Khalid Nasser. They clinched the first set by a narrow margin, 25-23, then widened the gap in the second set to win 25-21, and comfortably sealed the third set 25-17. On the other hand, Majees delivered a lacklustre performance, far from their usual level, as their players failed to meet expectations despite the support from their fans in attendance. Despite the loss, Seeb remain at the top of the standings, followed by Majees in second. Al Salam moved up to third place, while Al Bashayer climbed to fourth after their remarkable victory. Al Bashayer started strong, dominating the first set with a commanding 25-12 victory. However, Seeb quickly regained their balance and imposed their rhythm in the second set, securing an overwhelming 25-11 win. In the third set, Al Bashayer reasserted their dominance, relying on powerful serves and fast attacks from the flanks, which unsettled Seeb's defence. After a series of exchanged points, Al Bashayer managed to clinch the set 25-16 in a tense finish. As the competition intensified, Seeb entered the fourth set with a different tactical approach, strengthening their blocking and diversifying offensive play between quick sets and back-row attacks. This strategy paid off as Seeb won the set 25-21, forcing a decisive fifth set. In the final set, Seeb showed greater composure, taking an early lead. However, Al Bashayer fought back, narrowing the gap and keeping the score tight until the closing moments. Ultimately, Seeb's experience, particularly in serving and powerful spikes, made the difference, as they secured the set 16-14. This crucial victory propelled Seeb to the top of the league standings with seven points, while Al Bashayer remained in fourth place with just one point. Al Salam and Majees players in action. AL SALAM PREVAIL OVER MAJEES In another thrilling encounter held at Sohar Sports Complex, Al Salam secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Majees in a match that remained fiercely contested until the final moments. Majees started the match strongly, capitalising on Al Salam's struggles in attack and serving, sealing the first set with a commanding 25-15 win. However, Al Salam quickly regained their composure and delivered a more structured defensive and offensive performance in the second set, claiming a 25-19 victory to level the match. The excitement continued into the third set, where Majees once again regained their advantage, securing the set 25-19, reaffirming the close competition between the two teams. However, Al Salam demonstrated great determination in the fourth set, establishing control with strong blocking and effective attacks, winning 25-18 to force a decisive fifth set. In the final set, the intensity between the teams escalated, but Al Salam proved to be the stronger side in the crucial moments, sealing the set 15-9 and earning a valuable victory that strengthened their position in the league standings. With this win, Al Salam raised their tally to five points, moving into second place, while Majees, also with five points, settled for third place.
