Oman Paralympic Committee organises swimming training course
MUSCAT: The regional training course for Paralympic swimming, organised by the Oman Paralympic Committee (OPC) in collaboration with the West Asian Paralympic Federation and the Arab Federation for Sports of the Disabled, kicked off on Wednesday at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. The course runs until June 13, with 20 trainees from various Arab countries and the West Asian region participating. A select group of experts specialising in Paralympic swimming are delivering lectures during the course, including Dr Misbah Jaafar, Dr Mohammed Jaafar, and Dr Khaled Abdulaziz al Qurashi, who have extensive experience in coaching, refereeing, and organising Paralympic swimming competitions. In his opening speech, Dr Mansour bin Sultan al Touqi, President of the Oman Paralympic Committee, emphasised that this is the first- event of-its-kind in the Sultanate of Oman, reflecting the committee's commitment to achieving its strategy of diversity and expanding opportunities for people with disabilities to practice sports. The course runs until June 13, with 20 trainees from various Arab countries and the West Asian region He noted that the course represents a significant step toward developing Paralympic sports in the region, adding: 'Through this course, we aim to prepare qualified personnel capable of supporting athletes with disabilities and enhancing the awareness and infrastructure for Paralympic swimming both locally and regionally.' He also stated that hosting this course for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to promote social inclusion and support people with disabilities through sports activities. The course activities commenced with a programme that included both theoretical and practical sessions covering the fundamentals of Paralympic swimming training for various disability categories. The course also included specialised sessions on international refereeing mechanisms and medical classification standards in accordance with the International Paralympic Committee's approved regulations. Furthermore, the course covered team management and organising Paralympic championships, including planning and managing training camps, designing warm-up programmes, and addressing the psychological and social aspects of the athletes. Participants have the opportunity to engage, ask questions and participate in group workshops to enhance knowledge exchange. The course activities commenced with a programme that included both theoretical and practical sessions It is noteworthy that this course aims to qualify and train coaches and classifiers in Paralympic swimming, as well as referees and administrators, while familiarising participants with qualification policies for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. The course also seeks to develop national capabilities in Arab countries and West Asia, building a strong foundation to support and develop Paralympic swimming in the region, thereby expanding participation and achieving sports excellence.

Oman's Taha claims long jump bronze in New Delhi
AHMED AL KAABI MUSCAT, MARCH 13 Omani national team athlete Taha al Harrasi secured the bronze medal in the long jump competition at the Grand Prix Athletics Championship for Athletes with Disabilities, held in the Indian capital of New Delhi from March 9 to 15. With this achievement, Al Harrasi raised his medal tally to two, having previously won the gold medal in the 100-metre race. He managed a leap of 5.13 metres in the long jump, securing third place. Nepal's Matvil Lakshov claimed first place, followed by his compatriot Sharmin Kuisov in second place. The championship features more than 280 athletes representing 20 countries, competing in an intense and high-level tournament. Meanwhile, Omani athlete Mohammed al Mashaykhi continues his preparations for the shot put and club throw competitions. He aims to add more medals to Oman's tally in this prestigious event, which is one of the key championships on the calendar of the World Para Athletics Federation. The competition attracts wide participation from various countries striving for achievements and podium finishes. Mohammed al Hinai, Secretary-General of the Oman Paralympic Committee, expressed his pride in the achievements of the national team athletes at the Grand Prix Athletics Championship for Athletes with Disabilities. He emphasised that these successes reflect the growth of Paralympic sports in Oman and the ability of Omani athletes to compete internationally. Al Hinai praised Taha al Harrasi's outstanding performance, noting his success in winning the 100-metre gold and the long jump bronze. He affirmed that these accomplishments were not coincidental but the result of dedicated efforts by the athletes, coaching and administrative staff, as well as the support provided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), which facilitated the team's participation and ensured the necessary resources for these honourable results. He also highlighted that Mohammed al Mashaykhi continues intensive training in preparation for the shot put and club throw competitions, aligning with Oman's aspirations to claim more medals in the championship. Additionally, Al Hinai stressed that the Oman Paralympic Committee follows a clear strategy to support athletes with disabilities by providing a comprehensive training environment, participating in international tournaments, and fostering partnerships that enhance the development of para-sports. Oman Paralympic compete in Grand Prix in India
MUSCAT, MARCH 10 The Oman Paralympic Athletics team is set to compete today, Tuesday, in the Grand Prix Athletics Championship for Para Athletes, hosted in the Indian capital, New Delhi, from March 9 to 15. The championship features an elite lineup of the world's top para-athletes. The Oman Paralympic Committee delegation arrived in New Delhi on Monday, comprising athletes Mohammed bin Jameel al Mushaikhi and Taha bin Abdullah al Harassi, alongside national coach Asaad al Qarni. The delegation is headed by Mohammed bin Abdullah al Hinai, Secretary-General of the Oman Paralympic Committee. Mohammed al Mushaikhi will compete in the shot put and club throw competitions, while Taha al Harassi will participate in the 100-metre sprint and long jump competition. Monday, the national team players underwent a training session under the supervision of coach Asaad al Qarni to acclimate to the championship environment and enhance their technical readiness. Coach Asaad al Qarni emphasised that the team's preparations for the Grand Prix Championship followed a well-structured plan, involving intensive training phases to elevate the athletes' physical and technical levels. He explained that the preparations began some time ago, with the athletes undergoing an intensive training camp at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. The camp included daily training sessions focused on refining performance in their respective events, in addition to specialised fitness programmes aimed at boosting endurance and physical strength to match the level of competition in the championship. Al Qarni added, "We are aware that the Grand Prix Championship will witness fierce competition, given the participation of top para-athletes worldwide. This requires a high level of preparedness and both mental and physical readiness. Over the past period, we have worked on enhancing the athletes' techniques in their respective events and simulating competition scenarios to ensure their full readiness." He continued, "We have great confidence in our athletes, as they possess a strong sense of determination and challenge. Our goal is not just participation but to compete strongly for top positions and achieve a new milestone for Oman Paralympic sports." The Oman Paralympic Committee aspires to achieve outstanding results and secure podium finishes following an intensive preparation period. Al Salimi wins bronze in Asian Handcycling Championship
Muscat: Sami al Salimi, star of the Oman Paralympic Committee's national handcycling team, clinched the bronze medal in the 20 km time trial at the 13th Asian Championship, currently hosted by Thailand, featuring top athletes from across the continent. The race witnessed intense competition among Asia's top handcyclists, with Al Salimi facing off against experienced riders from Thailand, India, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, all of whom came into the championship with extensive preparation. Despite the strong competition, Al Salimi managed to assert himself throughout the race, delivering an impressive time that secured his spot on the podium and earned him the well deserved bronze medal.
