Residents inspire change by cleaning and brightening central Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Parts of central Topeka have a history of high crime and low overall neighborhood health, but it's motivating people to inspire positive change. The Central Topeka Grocery Oasis, Omni Circle and Keep America Beautiful are leading an effort to clean trash and repaint outdoor amenities in the Capital City. 'It's nice when people see the need and are ready to jump in and fill the need, which is to tidy up the community,' said Omni Circle COO Nikki Ramirez-Jennings. 'We're going to be repainting the playground equipment with the help of Shawnee County Parks and Rec. Stormont Vail is going to lead that charge. Schendel Lawn and Landscaping will be planting beautiful flowers and will help us maintain them.' The community once had a major grocery store in the area, but they packed up and left central Topeka in 2016 leaving many people in a food desert. What is your favorite Kansas park? 'When you don't have transportation to go and get groceries so that you can feed yourself and your family, that's a tough situation,' Central Topeka Grocery Oasis Executive Director Nadia Arbelo said. 'But to have that sense of pride and sense of being able to take care of oneself. To be able to feed your family wholesomely, healthily and affordably.' City data classifies the neighborhood health for many central Topeka areas as intensive care and at-risk. Meaning many residents tend to have higher rates of chronic diseases and lower access to healthcare services. Clean up groups say starting with small details can lead to bigger change. 'When people drive around and they see the beautiful flowers or the place that's clean of trash, it gets better with our mental state and it helps our physical state as well,' said Keep America Beautiful Executive Director Brittany Laughlin. 'We can live a more healthy life and happy life.' 530 homeless call Topeka, Shawnee County home: study For more local news, click here.
